Summary
Space Engineers is an absolutely brilliant and incredibly in-depth sandbox game where you can build your space colony from the ground up, explore space and planets via open-world creative mode, survival mode or scenario-based campaigns, or enjoy some simple fun with other players its other multiplayer-oriented game modes like its racing game mode or its MMO shooter “capture the flag”-style mode.
Plotline
Since the game is primarily a sandbox game, the storyline is what you want it to be. However, the game does also offer various story-driven scenarios, including those created by the avid players of the game, that you can enjoy if you prefer them.
Gameplay
The scope of Space Engineers’ gameplay is simply astounding, and there are so much to do and regardless of what you enjoy, you’ll definitely be able to find something you like here!
As a Minecraft-like sandbox game, you get to exploit the environment around you, and use those materials to craft a variety of items that you’ll need to build and survive. Similar to Satisfactory, the game features some automation as well, allowing you to use a series of crafting modules and conveyors to automatically generate various components and materials that are essential to your survival.
Base-building is a main aspect of the gameplay, especially if you decide to play the creative or survival modes. Building anything in this game is super easy, thanks to its Lego-like parts. You can even rotate the parts in any angle you want and assemble the many buildings in your base whichever way you like. There are also some pretty in-depth programming options for players who want certain items in the game to work exactly the way they wanted the items to, especially for consoles and buttons.
Similar to Trailmakers, this game provides you with the parts, which you’ll need to collect components to craft for, to design and build your very own spaceships and vehicles as well. Unlike the former however, I personally find it a lot easier to build vehicles in Space Engineers than in Trailmakers. It’s just easier to make the vehicle to actually run the way I envisioned it to.
Of course, like Minecraft, everything in the game can also be completely assembled, dismantled, and damaged (requiring repairs). This includes some pretty massive objects such as whole planets and moons, in addition to smaller structures like buildings, vehicles, spaceships and asteroids.
Exploration is another major part of the gameplay. Space Engineers boasts of featuring massive worlds that, although not procedurally-generated, are large enough to seem that way. Besides exploring planets, you can explore space as well. Similar to Everspace, Space Engineers offers thrilling space battles against AI-controlled space pirates from time to time. The controls here are so smooth. As a result, the dogfights you get into feels fun, engaging, and thrilling.
What’s truly impressive about the game though is how much of the game is based on actual physics, thanks to its powerful proprietary game engine. This means that everything from gravity, to inertia, to even velocity applies in this game. In fact, I found this out myself when I accidentally piloted my spaceship away from the landing spot I wanted stop at just because I didn’t stop pumping the air jets early enough. Thanks inertia!
And to think the engine was built by an indie game studio, that’s just beyond impressive!
Space Engineers supports its creative community of players by offering various ways they could customize their gameplay experiences. For instance, through the editor, players can create their own scenarios or game modes using available in-game assets and share them to others to enjoy via Steam workshop. Modders are also given the green light and the tools to create various mods for the game. When player-created content is taken into account, there are definitely plenty of content to keep a player entertained for years here.
Plus, if you’re a fan of taking gorgeous screenshots while playing games, know that you can easily disable the UI, get into third-person camera mode, and take some pretty cool shots.
However, I’d like to point out that despite having a beast of a PC that can run the game on maximum 4k resolution and has spaces that exceed the minimum requirement by miles, I’m still getting performance issues from the game. I reckon players running the game on potato PCs at borderline minimum requirements might encounter more issues than I did.
Community
Depending on your preference, Space Engineers allows you to play in single-player or multiplayer mode. Personally, however, I find that playing the game in single-player mode a tad bit boring since the game doesn’t have any wildlife that give the planets you explore that spark of life.
Space Engineers also has a huge community of passionate, avid and creative players who constantly produce some incredible worlds and scenarios that others, like me, can enjoy. They are very supportive too if you’re a newcomer and wanted to learn more about the “Steam-workshopping” part of the game.
Graphics/ Sound
As I was reviewing the game at the highest possible resolution, I’ve got to say that the graphics are pretty fantastic. Even at lower resolutions though, I’m pretty sure the game would look good as well. I love the sound here too. The music here has that space opera vibe and the sound effects are all spot-on, further providing me with that sort of in-depth immersion that’s the hallmark of every great game.
Conclusion
Space Engineers is truly a masterpiece of a very ambitious game especially considering its humble indie roots. The game seems to be a fun hybrid of Everspace, Minecraft, and Satisfactory, all of which are games that I’ve greatly enjoyed. However, I’d like to reiterate that playing the game in multiplayer mode with your friends is the way to go since single-player mode can feel rather boring.
All in all, this is the space game that players have always wanted… no, hungered for. If you liked what you’ve read, be sure to check the game out on Steam and maybe give the game a shot!
