Summary

Platformers have evolved by leaps and bounds through the decades. From relatively simple games where all you do is jump from one platform (hence its name) to another, these games now include puzzle elements and a plethora of other mechanics. For example, some games have turned into combat-centric titles where your character uses dozens of abilities, while others focus more on puzzles.

Panda Punch belongs to the latter category. It’s an action-packed puzzle platformer where you play as the titular panda - or red panda, which doesn’t resemble our idea of the animal - who is gearing up to save the world from evil alien robots. With his dad and robotic arm helping in this endeavor, you’ll navigate across dozens of levels, deal with countless enemies, and solve myriad puzzles.

Now available on the Nintendo Switch, should you give Panda Punch a shot? Before you decide, let’s check out what it has to offer:

Plotline

Panda Punch’s story centers around a protagonist living in a peaceful world whose tranquility was shattered by a swarm of invading alien robots. Fortunately, our hero has resolved to fight and will do so by using a robotic arm his father made. With that said, the story isn’t something that would garner a “best plot” award, but it is enough to provide an exciting background for the following events.

Gameplay

Panda Punch is as straightforward as it gets, especially when you compare it to the Mario Games, Celeste, and Rayman Legends. You’ll navigate across levels laden with traps, enemies, and tricky terrain you’ll have to go through. Moreover, it has this retro feel where the jumping and punching mechanics provide an experience similar to games from back in the day.

Most levels in Panda Punch are interconnected, and you can navigate between them through what looks like a computer. Levels are filled with various challenges taking the form of spiked traps you can jump over, place a barrel or crate over, and enemies. Some of these take the form of robots that attack sight, while others are stationary objects that fire when you get near. Though combat is relatively straightforward, fights are pretty exciting, regardless of how short they are. There are occasions wherein you have to jump and dodge bullets from a stationary turret or get surprised when a dormant robot suddenly springs to life and attacks. The same can be said about boss fights.

Thankfully, our red panda protagonist is not powerless. He, along with his hands, is capable of fighting back. His most basic ability is to unleash a powerful punch to pummel foes or stop things in their tracks. Once you progress into the many levels, you can unlock more capabilities that will aid you in further challenges. For example, your arm can be upgraded to carry objects which beats having to push them around.

Panda Punch’s puzzles are relatively simplistic, only requiring you to activate specific switches and place objects in certain areas. In a way, it’s a more casual version of the puzzles in 2D Zelda games, so you won’t have to worry about getting stressed out.

Panda Punch’s overall gameplay loop feels a tad repetitive, but even this has its appeal. The game excels in providing an accessible, chill adventure that is easy to pick up and play, making it a perfect choice for Switch players who wants to try out experiences that won’t push them over the edge. There’s little risk, and unless you’re that bad at playing, you probably won’t lose many lives. In addition, the game mixes things up through coins and collectibles you can find across levels.

Graphics/Sound

Presentation-wise, Panda Punch looks more like a game released in the late 90s than a current-day platformer. This is fine; its art style delivers pinches of nostalgia. Its colors pop, and the level design is nothing short of fantastic; everything looks different, and the devs put so much effort into the backgrounds and overall design. Its music is also reminiscent of older games, so if you’re partial to these types of tunes, you’ll have a fun time.

Conclusion

Panda Punch is a chill puzzle platformer with a pinch of action that is perfect for players looking for a stress-free gaming experience. Most of the time, it provides little challenge, making it ideal for you if you’d like an easy and gratifying time that won’t give you too much trouble.

Now available on the Switch for an affordable $4, give it a shot today, and join our hero in saving the world from evil alien robots!
