Summary

First, you cannot tell me that Avenging Spirit wasn’t inspired by Ghost, an extremely popular movie in 1990 featuring Demi Moore where the soul of a dead man attempts to protect his girlfriend from a corrupt business partner. There’s just little to separate the two; if you’ve seen the movie, you would be on the same train of thought.

Movies aside, Avenging Spirit is a classic arcade game recently brought to the Switch by Ratalaika Games 30 years after its release. It is the quintessential arcade title, best played with spectators behind you in a quarter-guzzling arcade machine. Though quite dated (it’s 30 years old, after all), its main gameplay element is undoubtedly ahead of its time.

As a Switch game, it delivers a rather difficult challenge and is an excellent experience for anyone looking for retro games. In your case, should you give it a shot? Let’s check out what it has to offer:

Plotline

Avenging Spirit puts you in the shoes of a ghost on a mission to save his girlfriend, who also happens to be the daughter of what looks like a scientist who can harness ghost energy. Though the plot is far from similar to the popular Ghost movie, it’s a gripping tale with a couple of endings that we won’t go deep into because of spoilers. With that said, you’ll attempt to save her by infiltrating the enemy base and taking out anything coming your way.

Gameplay

Avenging Spirit’s gameplay is akin to its peers released back in the day. It’s a 2D sidescrolling action/platformer with a difficulty curve that will make you empty your coin purse in the local arcade. However, it is set apart thanks to its relatively advanced gameplay mechanic, where you get to play as a massive variety of characters. How is this done, you ask? Well, you’re a ghost who can possess enemy underlings and fully use their abilities in combat.

Each character has its attack patterns, capability, and even weight. For example, there’s a humanoid lizard who feels bulky and slow but can unleash a devastating short-range fire breath. Meanwhile, you could also play as characters that look like the quintessential mobster armed with a Tommy Gun, a wizard that casts spells, a lady that throws snowballs, or an old baseball player that deflects enemy projectiles. The diversity is vast, and we’re sure you’ll want to die multiple times simply to try out how every character plays. Undoubtedly, this is the element that set Avenging Spirit apart from its peers back in the day. In a way, it made me feel like playing Watch Dogs: Legion since they both have similar gimmicks.

The goal in Avenging Spirit is to reach the end of every stage where a boss is waiting. Boss fights are incredibly tough, but usually, they have predictable attack patterns, which will make them easier to deal with the longer you fight them. These range from a worm-like robot that hides and pops out in piles of trash to a massive claw machine. Meanwhile, the stages are full of enemies that will attack on sight. Due to their numbers, they can be pretty hard to face, especially multiple varieties that fire numerous projectiles. Moreover, the game’s levels are detailed, with a lot of quirks and hidden secrets. However, you need to prioritize the search for keys that will play a crucial role in the plot later on.

Though you may be a ghost in Avenging Spirit, you’re not immortal. Your energy is finite; it continually decreases every time the character you possess takes a hit, and the longer you float around without a host. Fortunately, you can replenish your supply by picking up potions scattered across the stages.

Much like most retro Switch ports, Avenging Spirit lets you pick difficulty modes and rewind save states for ease and accessibility.

Community

Avenging Spirit has no multiplayer elements whatsoever, being a single-player game. However, it has relatively high replayability since you can attempt to beat your high scores in every playthrough.

Graphics/Sound

In terms of presentation, Avenging Spirit looks fantastic and aged like fine wine. Though highly dated, it looks decent on the Nintendo Switch and runs pretty smoothly. Although the music is repetitive and one-dimensional, it presents a conducive environment perfect for games of this genre.
