Summary
It’s rare to see platformers today that are straightforward. Most of the ones we see today are tight and hardcore; sure, they’re great titles, but they are relatively inaccessible and unplayable for those looking for a chill time. Yes, I’m looking at you, Celeste. Even two of the most popular franchises, Mario and Sonic, have many intricacies in their newest installments. We’re not saying this is bad since games need to evolve and bring something new. Moreover, players’ tastes evolve, and providing them with the same game every time will make things a little stale.
However, some games give us the core experience that makes us occasionally return to our roots. One such game is Go! Go! PogoGirl!, a rather unique yet straightforward platformer developed by a one-person team, Ohsat Games, and published by Ratalaika Games on the Nintendo Switch. Now available on the handheld console, the game is essentially a core platformer akin to the retro 90s-style games some of us may have played. Though it’s quite a challenging experience, it’s one of the most chill platformers today and is something you’d eye if you’re in the market for an easy platformer.
So, should you add Go! Go! PogoGirl! to your gaming library? Let’s check out what it has to offer:
Plotline
Go! Go! PogoGirl! doesn’t have much of a story and is not precisely told through dialogue. It leaves more to be desired. Regardless, the whole plot is relatively straightforward. The game centers around a stolen pogo stick, and PogoGirl has to get it back. To do so, she has to traverse several places with different seasons. Moreover, she has to deal with various obstacles, traps, and enemies along the way and battle certain bosses.
Gameplay
PogoGirl’s gameplay is akin to 2D sidescrolling retro platformers, with the main difference being her constant jumping. Just imagine Mario hopping around instead of staying still. As PogoGirl, you’ll bounce around various levels and navigate a variety of obstacles similar to what you see in other titles. For example, there are spiked pits, slime enemies, and collectibles you have to take as you go along your journey.
In Go! Go! PogoGirl!, the movement is relatively hard to get used to, especially when you first boot the game up. Sometimes, you might unwittingly take an extra bounce which may ruin a sequence, dropping you down a pit full of spikes or missing an entire platform entirely. It’ll be chaotic, and though it takes a lot of effort, you can master the whole thing after going through a couple of levels. Fortunately, PogoGirl doesn’t just bounce and hop around. She can use her pogo stick to unleash lethal punishment on her enemies. She can twirl or spin to inflict damage or hop on top of an unsuspecting slime or a rather large boss.
Apart from little hops, PogoGirl can perform rather complex jumps. For example, by holding the down directional button or the analog stick downward, she can stay in place, charge up and jump higher. You’ll be required to do this several times on many levels, and it is crucial if you want to obtain all the green and red gems. Moreover, you can also make your landings more weighty (which feels satisfying, by the way), which is a must if you want to hit a switch to open a certain part of a level in one go.
All things considered, Go! Go! PogoGirl! feels more like a casual version of a more difficult platformer, which is good. You don’t need to reach gem quotas or obtain a high score; instead, you just have to reach the end of every level to unlock the next. Though this may be a gripe for players looking for a challenge, it makes the game relatively accessible to players of all ages and skill levels. However, if you’d like to challenge yourself, the game records your time and awards you with gold coins depending on how good you are at the end of every level.
Graphics/Sound
In terms of presentation, Go! Go! PogoGirl! is one of the most attractive retro-style platformers I’ve ever played on the Switch. It delivers a quirky, colorful, and well-designed world that is a joy to explore. The level designs are pretty standard yet offer a lot of depth; there’s a lot of verticality ranging from underground levels to towering areas that seem like they touch the clouds. There are hidden paths and secrets you’d want to find especially if you wish to collect all gems. The music pops and is reminiscent of platformers of yore.
Conclusion
Overall, Go! Go! PogoGirl! should be one of your primary options if you’re looking for a chill game or a retro-style platformer akin to the games you played as a kid. It delivers a beautifully-crafted world and precise and polished controls, and though it may take a while to get used to the bouncing, the game is easy to learn. It’s a standard yet creative and unique take on old platformers that remains faithful to the old formula.
Available on the Switch for $4.99, we highly recommend bouncing around in Go! Go! PogoGirl!
