Summary

Go Fight Fantastic is an action-packed hack-and-slash adventure game that lets you cause a bunch of mayhem with up to two of your friends. In this game, you play as a member of a crew of misfits who, under the leadership of Captain Bowie, deliver goods deemed illegal by the Federal Alliance to civilizations that need them. However, a delivery turned awry when a hostile yet technologically advanced race descended upon the more primitive civilization. Will you be able to help the locals repel these ruthless invaders?

Plotline

Go Fight Fantastic is set in the future, where a technologically advanced civilization decided to set up a Federal Alliance to regulate how trade between planets and civilizations of different stages occurred. The golden rule here is not to let technologically advanced planets help out the more primitive civilizations, even if technologies from such planets could save lives. The idea here is to let evolution play out, and if a civilization is to attain high technological status, it has to do so through their own effort and sheer will.

However, not everyone thinks the same way. This allows crews like the one that includes our protagonists, Max Sparkles, Super Nova, Dark Matter, and Mercury, as well as their super adorable and fluffy captain, Captain Bowie to operate in the down-low to transport highly-illegal technologies to civilizations that need them… and of course, can pay for them.

A routine delivery drop-off turned into something more, however, when they encountered a new technologically advanced race made of what seemed to be Jello, who was ruled over by a being known only as the Empress. They are hellbent on subjugating all the inferior races, starting with the bird planet the crew has landed on. Help the locals take on these unwelcome invaders!

Gameplay

To start playing, you’ll need to first assemble your team of three out of the four characters available. For dealing damage, there’s the fast melee DPSer, the dual-lightsaber-wielding Striker known as Dark Matter, and there’s the ranged archer, Mercury. There’s also a healer, Max Sparkles, and a tank, Super Nova. Each character has their own unique role to play in the team and hence, has different abilities that you can tap into.

Even if you’re playing single player, your team composition is crucial in this game since you’ll get to swap between characters during combat and this will, in turn, determine your playstyle and strategy. For instance, if you decide to forgo the healer, then you’ll want to focus on getting as much lifesteal and health regen as you can for your characters so they could at least self-heal when needed. Once your team is ready, you can get into the game proper.

Aside from the Horde mode, where you’ll fight to the death and see how far up the leaderboard you can climb, Go Fight Fantastic’s story mode is segmented into chapters, with each chapter containing a map that’s made up of several instanced locations. The gameplay loop here mostly revolves around clearing each location of enemies (and finding all secrets, which usually offer additional currency to collect), and moving on to the next before taking on a final big bad baddie – the boss of the chapter at the end. Your crew will return to the spaceship in between chapters, where you can then upgrade your characters, buy stuff, and generally kick back and relax before diving back into another round.

Combat in this game is straight-up hack-and-slash. You’ll encounter the typical danger circles that you’ll do well to avoid, as well as projectiles and, some cases, chain grabs. Depending on the character you chose to play as, you can dash about dealing damage in between dodges as Dark Matter, or tank-and-spank any enemies you find as Super Nova.

Interestingly, in single player, you still get to play as all the three characters you chose to make up your team. However, due to limitations that is associated with only having one player controlling the character, you can’t play all three of them at the same time. Instead, the game lets you easily and seamlessly swap between the three whenever you want… and yes, that means during combat as well.

This allows for a host of intriguing fighting strategies to take hold, including my personal favorite, having Max drop several healing orbs, and switching back to Dark Matter or Super Nova to pick them up. You can deal extra damage by attacking an enemy from the back as well, so that’s a good way to maximize your damage output. Aside from the minor health orbs and two kinds of currencies – pink and blue crystals, there are also boosters that you may sometimes come across that may grant your character a nice albeit temporary stats increase.

Unfortunately, the game doesn’t seem to display these boosts prominently – at least in clear icon format - and I’m often left wondering if a boost is still active or not. You see, you can’t stack boosts in this game. If you want to take the risk to grab a nearby boost while enemies are still yeeting projectiles at you, you might want to know if you could actually pick up the boost or not in the first place.

Boss fights here are thrilling and fun. It’s all about reacting quickly to the boss’ attack patterns, be it a ground slam or a charge ability. The game is designed so that this part is simple enough to pick up, after just a few minutes into the fight, even for novices to the game and genre… especially once they understand that the circle marks on the ground isn’t something you’d want to stand in.

Death isn’t penalized as badly here either. Since you have three characters in your team, if one or two of them fall in battle, you’ll still be able to control the remaining character to revive the fallen. You’ll only get a game over if you have a team wipe, which frankly speaking happens rarely

As mentioned, your crew will return to the spaceship in between chapters to rest up. Here, you can also access the upgrades panel, where you can then augment your characters with meteorites you may have picked up in your journey, usually as drops from fallen enemies and bosses. Each character can be equipped with up to three meteorites. These meteorites come in different grades and qualities too. You can buy new ones from the shop using blue crystals or pick up some for free via stashes, with the rarer ones like the Legendary and Epic ones, being dropped exclusively from defeated bosses.

There’s also a Forge option where you can upgrade the meteorite you get to a higher level. All you need is enough pink crystals to do so. However, it does seem to me that this might be a missed opportunity to let players merge similar meteorites of the same grade and level to get a higher level one. At it stands, I have way too many meteorites that I will never use in my inventory just gathering dust. After all, I’ve found the meteorites that fit best with my play style and I’m sticking to those.

Despite offering single player mode, Go Fight Fantastic is designed for co-op (both online and split screen) from the start. This is evident from the character “classes” and their specialties, allowing players to cover for each other’s weaknesses. It has Playstation and Xbox controller support too. Without a doubt, the game is best played with up to two of your friends.

Graphics/ Sound

Go Fight Fantastic contains anime-style visuals that are amazingly animated to showcase the fast-paced action featured in the gameplay. The gorgeous vibrant world you adventure in also has that old-school cartoon aesthetics that 90s kids grew up with. In terms of sound, the game comes with a selection of rock music that, together with the many sound effects, goes really well with the action-packed gameplay.

Conclusion

Go Fight Fantastic is a thrilling hack-and-slash with very interesting gameplay mechanics for its single-player mode – on-the-fly character switching. Although the story is the typical “save the world” sort, the setting of the game itself is intriguing, especially how the Alliance classifies different civilizations and how many new ones you can discover along the way. For replayability, the game even has a horde mode where you’ll get to showcase your skill and rise to the top of the leaderboard.

So, if you are looking for a unique yet cozy hack-and-slash game that you can play either alone or with friends or family, especially for people or kids new to the genre, Go Fight Fantastic might just be a fantastic choice for you. You can buy the game now on Steam.
