Summary

Final Fantasy Brave Exvius was developed by Gumi and is a mobile role-playing game focusing on collecting heroes. The characters in the game are all based on the popular Final Fantasy franchise from Square Enix with some originals designed for Brave Exvius, you collect new heroes by completing missions or opening from the shop then you can improve their levels or upgrade to a higher ranked character.

Plotline

The game focus on the journey of two characters; Rain and Lasswell as they help a young woman in protecting the crystals from the hands of Veritas as he attempts to destroy all of the existing crystal. Compared to other mobile online RPGs, Brave Exvious provides a steady storyline that allow players to invest on it and enjoy the progression.

Gameplay

Brave Exvius’ gameplay is heavily based on the other popular game from Gumi; Brave Frontier. It features its basic combat gameplay and hero collecting mechanics which fits well with the idea of having Final Fantasy characters to be the main highlight. But Brave Exvius still manage to introduce new game features to make it original.

The main concept of the game is to collect the most powerful heroes to become your main party, to do that players must progress through the game to acquire some of the characters or earn enough crystals and open gacha-like crystals that reveals a random character. There are some chances that you can receive a rare character which can be distinguished on their star rating, and rarer characters means more powerful characters for your party. New to Brave Exvius is equipping your characters with weapons and armor, you can obtain these from monster loot or from stores in towns, alternatively you can craft your own equipment once you acquire the blueprints and some rare items can only be crafted.

You take on an adventure with Rain and Lasswell by completing story missions that lets you progress in the story and earn levels, but just like in any mobile RPGs, taking missions will require stamina and you cannot take any missions or raids you ran out of stamina. These can replenish overtime or by spending real money on it. Completing missions will provide you some hefty amount of EXP and loot items, the items can be used to upgrade your heroes to higher ranking ones to help boost your party.

What makes the game unique from Brave Frontier is that you can enter into towns or dungeons just like in any typical RPGs where you can explore the area and interact with other NPCs or discover hidden treasures, in dungeons you will have random encounters with monsters and earn EXP, then when exploring towns you can take quests from NPCs and receive rewards upon completion.

The combat system is based on Brave Frontier, but it added some original mechanics found in Final Fantasy games. You will be bringing a five-man party in every mission and will be running on a turn-based system. You can perform actions by tapping on the character icons to initiate the attack, each character has their own attack pattern which you can combine with other characters to perform combos.

You can also unleash a limit break attacks when your meter is full or you can cast spells with the expense of MP or magic points, and the best highlight is summoning powerful beings that can deal massive damage to all enemies or buff your entire party, you can acquire more summons when you progress into the story and assign it to one of the your characters.

You can pick from the different game modes available in Brave Exvius. Aside from the standard missions in the World Map, you can take other missions from the Vortex. Completing missions in the Vortex allows you to acquire characters and materials to further boost your levels and unlock more high ranking characters. Then there are some special limited time events that provides exclusive items or characters that players can participate.

Community

As the Final Fantasy franchise having a big community, it is no surprise to see Brave Exvius to have a healthy community. Players share their guides in forums and fan sites to provide newbies and veterans, as for game features, you can add friends that can assist you in missions as an additional party member, you can also send or receive gifts from your friends as ways of sharing resources. For PvPs, you can challenge other players in Arenas however all battles are AI-controlled just like with Brave Frontier.

Graphics/ Sound

The game features 2D pixel sprites that follows the same art direction with Brave Frontier and not the same chibi-sized 2D characters found on classic Final Fantasy games, but the choice of art direction was still great as it blends perfectly with the Final Fantasy characters. Battle animations are smooth and filled with light effects when doing special attacks, and whenever you perform a summon, a short cut-scene will show up showcasing the selected summon to deal damage, a typical feature found in Final Fantasy games. The soundtrack is somewhat great as it blends some classic Final Fantasy tunes as well as creating its own tracks that sounded similar to Brave Frontier.

Conclusion

Final Fantasy Brave Exvius provides a familiar gameplay with some refreshing take that will keep Brave Frontier and Final Fantasy fans more reason to play it. Mixing the Brave Frontier gameplay with the well-known Final Fantasy flavor made the game feels like a perfect blend. Those who prefer incredible graphics might get turned off with Brave Exvius due to its 2D sprites, but if you are looking for something that will keep you hooked for days, you may want to try this game right now.
