Many types of bugs live in peace and harmony in the world of Minutia. However, all of these changed when a comet hit Mount Boom, the volcano that is located nearby to the bugs’ homes. As if the impact was not bad enough, the comet has brought an almost endless stream of voracious slugs that came pouring out from the mountain. The storyline of the game unravels as you progress. There are snippets of the plotline interspersed in between certain levels in the game, and when combined, they do present a very intriguing story that will definitely keep players hooked.
Similar to other free-to-play match-3 games, the number of times that you can play Best Fiends is restricted by the energy system in the game. Although you need to only spend 1 energy point to play at first, the energy cost will increase as you progress in the game. The energy you’ve used up will be recharged over time, though you could always speed things up by buying energy refills using gold bars or by pestering your friends for some free energy. However, with 20 energy points in total, you’ll still be able to play this game for quite awhile before you need to take “drastic” measures to continue playing the game.
Once you’re in a game though, you’ll be led through a series of tutorials, teaching you how to play the game. Unlike conventional match-3 games, you need to chain up items of the same color, shape and type in Best Fiends. You can link up the blocks as long as there is another same block located within its vicinity. In this game, you will want to combine as many blocks as you can so your bug will be able to deal a lot more damage to the slugs.
...And that brings us to the “combat” part of the game. Although you started the game with a non-combat level, eventually, you’ll find your path blocked by slugs. To attack, you need to link up items of the same color as the bug in question. By chaining up as much items as you can, you’ll be able to defeat the slugs a lot quicker. You’ll also get a chance to earn bonus gems.
There are also level objectives that you’ll need to complete. They can vary between collecting an X amount of leaves, for instance, to defeating a Y amount of slugs. However, Best Fiends only provides you with limited number of moves per level. Thus, you will need to manage the moves you have properly so you will have sufficient moves to get to the end of the level as well as complete the level goals. This movement limitation is rather unique in a combat match-3 game as most similar games tend to use a timer as a limitation instead. It does make Best Fiends stand out from the other combat match-3 games on the internet!
In combat, the bugs in your team play an important role as well. For example, Temper the green bug can only attack the slug with his full strength when you match up the green leaves in the playing field. If you match up the yellow flowers instead, Temper will still deal some damage, provided that there isn’t a yellow bug on your team, but it is a lot less than what you would get from a green-colored match. You can only have 1 bug of each color type on your team.
Each bug character not only has their specific color, but they also have their own special skills. These skills can only be activated if matches of the corresponding color are made... making matching the right colors very important in Best Fiends. These correct matches will fill up some sort of a power-up meter. Once full, you’ll gain the bug’s special skill and the meter resets. For instance, Temper the green bug will give you free bombs, while Kwincy the yellow bug will give you converters instead. Bombs work by clearing an entire row of blocks. Converters, on the other hand, will convert all the blocks around it into yellow flowers if it is linked with a yellow flower (it doesn’t work if you link it with any of the other block colors).
As expected, there are many bug characters that you can recruit to your team. For each color type, you have up to 5 different bugs to choose from (once you have all of them unlocked, of course). One of these 5 bugs is a super rare bug as well, but it’s really nice to see that players won’t be able to unlock or buy the more powerful bugs using premium cash. In other words, everyone has to work for the bug characters that they want... there are no shortcuts here!
These bug characters can also be “upgraded” by using up meteormites that landed in the world of Minutia along with the slugs via the comet. Meteormites are powerful microbes that are able to increase the attack power of your bugs, effectively turning them from zero to hero!
To make things even more interesting, Best Fiends even provides plenty of obstacles for you to circumvent. Some examples include tree stumps, which can be cleared by matching nearby blocks; locks, stick barriers, and even solid stones. Another interesting aspect in this game is its mini-game. This mini-game, which presents 9 similar-looking wooden boxes, pops up at the end of every successful level and you’ll then need to pick which wooden boxes you would like to unlock. Of course, you’ll need keys to open these goodies-filled boxes and keys can be earned by winning levels.
Best Fiends is one of the most popular match-3 games that are released in 2015 on Facebook. Thus, it is safe to say that the game community is pretty huge. If you enjoy meeting up with your fellow players, you can go ahead and interact with hem by visiting the game’s Facebook fan page.
Like most match-3 games, Best Fiends features eye-catching and very colorful graphics. The bug characters that you’ll be able to recruit to your team are very cute as well. In terms of music, the game offers a rather catchy music that somehow feels rather witty in some sort of way. Couple the amazing graphics and great sound with engaging gameplay and you’ll get the recipe for a successful casual game.... and for Best Fiends.
In a nutshell, Best Fiends is an incredible combat match-3 game that is not only “fiendishly” challenging, but also very fun to play. You are given the chance to defeat the outpouring of slugs from Mount Boom with your team of valiant bugs. With proper use of meteormites and great match-3 skills, you’ll be able to slay as many of these nasty slugs as you can in an attempt to rescue the poor innocent bugs these creatures have bug-napped. Best Fiends has won a plethora of awards for a very good reason, and if you’re a huge fan of match-3 games, you might want to find out why yourself by playing this amazing game!
