Gameplay

Sponge Pop starts off with a simple tutorial, which teaches you the basics of the game. Like any match-3 games, you will have to swap to match 3 or more same colored pieces – soap bars, in this case – to collect them from the playing board. By matching up more soap bars, you’ll then earn special super soaps.

For instance, match-4s will reward you with striped super soaps - either a horizontal or a vertical one, depending on how you match them up. The orientation of the stripes on the special soap bar indicates whether it will clear an entire row or column when the line blast effect was triggered. The horizontally-striped super soap will remove all soap bars that are on the same row while the vertically-striped super soap will clear soap on the same column.

For match-5s, it can get a tad bit tricky here depending on how you match the soap bars up. If the match-5 performed was in an L or T-shaped., you’ll earn a super soap that looks like a soap bomb. When you match up the soap bomb with other soaps of the same color, the bomb will explode, clearing all the soap bars in a 3x3 radius around it.

However, if 5 of the soap bars are matched in a linear format – doesn’t matter if it’s horizontal or vertical, you’ll get a colorful soap donut instead! When you swap this soap donut with any neighboring soap bars, it will clear all soap bars of the same color as the swapped soap bar on the board!

Interestingly, you can also mix different types of super soap to create new effects, called as the mega soap effect. For example, by combining striped soap with the colorful soap donut, every soap bar of the same color as the striped soap will turn into striped ones themselves. All these striped soap will all then be activated at the same time. On the other hand, by combining soap bomb with striped soap, you’ll create mega bomb that clears 3 rows or column (depending on the orientation of the stripes) of soap bars. There are many combinations that you can try out and explore!

Each level also contains up to 3 stars for you to earn, but you just need to get at least 1 star in order to proceed to the next level. Naturally, like any other non-time-based match-3 games, Sponge Pop provides you with limited moves per level to complete the level objective. The level objectives are usually and clearly stated, such as achieving a certain score milestone or collecting all the toys on the board by dropping them down. The rules regarding how these moves are used can be a tad bit confusing though. Initially, even if you reached the level objective, you’ll be given the chance to spend your remaining moves. Once all moves are used up, any remaining special soap bars in the playing field will be activated one by one to earn you bonus score points.

However, once you encountered your first blocker, the rules changed. Any remaining moves are used to convert other soap bars into super soaps and activated. Sometimes, toy boats will be deployed – how many toy boats depends on how many moves you have left - to clear off your leftover moves by transporting away soap bars from the board. It is a bit weird but both methods will give you bonus points that will help you overtake your friends and fellow players on the leaderboard.

Sponge Pop offers plenty of challenge, particularly in the later levels, by introducing blockers and obstacles. One such example is the gray-colored blocker that must be removed from the board by matching soap bars over them. If you can’t complete the level goals given with the available moves, then you’ll fail the level and lose a life. There are 5 lives that you can use up and these lives will regenerate over time by themselves. Want to play more matches? Well, you can easily purchase more lives using real cash if you can’t wait. You’ll be showing some support the developers of the game as well!

Looking for a way to not waste lives away unnecessarily? Well, you’re in luck! Sponge Pop offers plenty of boosters for you, which you can buy using premium currency. These boosters can be separated into 2 types – those that can be bought prior to entering a game and those that can be purchased while you’re in a game. For the former type, some examples include smash mop, which removes a specific soap bar that you want, and 5 extra moves that provides you with – what else? – 5 extra moves.

For the latter, there are plenty of boosters that you can purchase as well, namely the toy boat, soap bomb, super pivot and many more. The toy boat boost is able to summon a wave of toy boats to randomly remove soap bars from your board, while the soap bomb (a.k.a. soap donut) boost will provide a free soap donut that is placed randomly on your board when the game is started. The super pivot, on the other hand, allows you to swap it with any other soap bar to activate (a lot like how the soap donut works) and enjoy the splash!

Besides buying them individually, which is rather expensive, the in-game shop sells these boosters in themed and aptly named bundles, like Soapy Splash, Sparkle Wash and Super Wipe. You can even send free boosters to your friends as gifts and hopefully due to the goodwill you’ve shown, they will gift boosters back to you as well

Community

Sponge Pop is a very new game that has yet to celebrate its second month of release, hence, the community in this game can be a tad bit small. However, the game currently has almost 8 thousand likes and 100 thousand monthly active players. These numbers are expected to keep increasing as the game “ages” and get more exposure. Graphics/ Sound

The graphics in the game are very nicely colored and the soap bars are cute-looking. The background images are very creatively done as well! The music in Sponge Pop, on the other hand, consists of a looped casual, upbeat and catchy music that is backed with ambient sounds of a very bubbly bath. The loop is rather extensive though, and thus, the music can become rather annoying after awhile. Thankfully, you have the option to turn the music off if you want.

Conclusion

All in all, Sponge Pop is challenging time-based match-3 game that has a rather unique theme but its gameplay is pretty similar to many of the match-3 games out there. The game also provides plenty of levels for you to enjoy and it often spices up the gameplay by adding blockers and obstacles, like gray tiles and locks, to the game. You just need to obtain t least 1 star in order to progress in this game, but if getting even 1 star is a tall order for a particularly difficult level, do feel free to spend some of those premium cash you have to buy and use the many boosters available.
