Summary
Yet Another Zombie Survivors is a bloodier version of Vampire Survivors with a post-apocalyptic zombie theme. In this game, you find yourself trapped with nowhere to escape. Determined to take down as many of “them” as possible, you’ll need to survive the zombie horde for as long as possible. You won’t be alone, though! You may rescue other survivors who will join your team (up to three total) and happen on powerful pickups and powerups as you progress. How long will you be able to last before you get overwhelmed?
Gameplay
To start playing, you’ll need first to choose a character class as your “team leader”. As mentioned above, in this game, you’ll be able to add new team members to your team, up to a total of three members, including yourself, the team leader. Each class has its respective unique leader perk that will apply to the entire team. For instance, the SWAT improves reload times while the Engineer reduces skill cooldown.
Each character class can also be upgraded to improve its perks. However, unlike most experience point-based progression systems, you’ll need to reach certain zombie-killed milestones before you can upgrade your class. When you first start out, you’ll already have access to the default three classes – the SWAT, the Tank, and the Engineer, but as you progress, you’ll eventually be able to unlock the subsequent three classes, namely the Huntress, Ghost, and Medic. There are actually three more classes that are in the works too since the game’s currently in Early Access. There’s no timeline as to when these classes will be released, but we reckon it’ll likely be nearer to launch or even on the day of the full release.
Once you have your team leader, it’s time for some bullet-hell action! The gameplay is pretty typical as per the formula set out by Vampire Survivors. Your unit will attack automatically, and it falls on you to help him navigate the battlefield so that he wouldn’t get swarmed by the zombie horde. Once you rescue and add new units to your team, you’ll control the entire team as a whole, so everything’s pretty straightforward. However, you could opt to Liberate your rescuee instead by sending them to a nearby safehouse for cash and a free level-up. To help you find survivors to rescue, the game provides helpful indicators at the edge of the screen that will guide you to them.
Leveling up on the battlefield is very beneficial to your team as you’ll gain a free powerup to choose out of the three choices given, so make sure to gather those experience crystals (come in three colors: yellow, red, and blue) as much as possible. These powerups are associated with the members of your team, so if you’re by your lonesome, you’ll only have access to powerups of your class only, such as shotgun upgrades for the Tank or pistol upgrades for the SWAT class.
This is different from the powerups you can get from the free chests that sparingly spawn on the battlefield from time to time. Picking those up will grant you a power-up that applies to the entire team. Similarly, to locate these chests when they spawn, just look out for the yellow indicators at the edge of the screen. Also note that for weapon upgrades, at least, once you’ve maxed out a weapon upgrade, you’ll be able to unlock a new and more powerful weapon to upgrade some more.
The class-linked powerups can be quite powerful, however, as they include class-based special abilities – most of which are passive and will trigger on their own after their respective cooldowns – that can really make quite the difference when the zombie horde gets thicker and tougher (they “level up” as well, spawning new varieties and tougher variants of the zombies you’ve fought before) as you advance. For instance, the Tank has this Sawblade Drone ability that, when unlocked, will grant your team a passive way of damaging zombies that got too close to your group. There’s also a helpful panel on the right that shows your team stats, like its total health regeneration or weapon damage, as well as the team level.
As more and more zombies swarm your location, you may encounter boss zombies who are not only tougher than usual to defeat but they also come with special abilities that can deal quite a bit of damage to your team if you’re not careful. Thankfully, to help you even further, you’ll also be able to grab powerful pickups that are dropped, if you’re lucky, from fallen zombies. They range from the Magnet, which allows you to essentially attract all experience crystals to your location within a wide vicinity, to
Unlike in Halls of Torment, where the clock counts down to the spawning of the dungeon’s “final boss”, the clock in Yet Another Zombie Survivors counts upwards instead since it’s technically an endless game. This also means that you may encounter the same bosses as before once you’ve exhausted the current rotation of bosses. You’ll do your best to survive for as long as possible before getting overwhelmed and ending your run.
At the end of each run, you’ll get to take away any money you’ve accumulated and be rewarded with a sum of training points, depending on how well you did. You can then add the points to perks in one of 5 branches, namely Endurance, Charisma, Strength, Intellect and Agility to get increased stats like movement speed, health, or even experience gained. By leveling your team up, you can unlock a new tier of perks to invest in. There’s a total of 4 tiers, inclusive of the first tier, that’s unlocked from the start. Similar to most games within the genre, you are free to reset your points whenever you need to.
As fun as the game is, I can’t help but notice that there’s only one map in this game. Maybe I’ve been spoiled by Halls of Torment, which features multiple dungeons and hence, enemy types and bosses, but I think it might be a good idea to add more locations and, by extension, vary up the bosses you encounter.
Graphics/ Sound
Despite its dark and dreary post-apocalyptic theme, the game manages to add some vibrant colors to the game through cool-looking effects like explosions, projectiles, and other area-of-effect attacks. The visuals also emphasize on gore, featuring quite a bit of blood in the game.
In terms of sound, the game comes with rock music that can get that adrenaline going as you mow through the horde of swarming zombie. The music is heavily looped, but you’d hardly notice it among all the intense shooting and zombie dodging you’d be doing, as well as the many other sound effects that are produced from all the action going on on-screen. That said, it’d be nice to have a variety of suitable music to enjoy instead of only one on repeat.
Conclusion
Even as an early access title, Yet Another Zombie Survivors offers a nice variation of the typical Vampire Survivors formula, giving us zombie fans a fun reverse bullet-hell roguelite gameplay to enjoy where we could assemble a team of survivors to take on the ever-growing horde. Progression is satisfying here, with plenty of training perks and classes to unlock. You can easily get hours of fun out of the game, making its asking price quite affordable as well.
So, if you’re a fan of the Survivors genre and would like to experience it in a different kind of setting – guns instead of magic, you’ll definitely want to grab Yet Another Zombie Survivors!
