Summary
World of Touch, also known simply as Touch, is a fun and addictive dancing simulation game that has strong social aspects much like a virtual world game. In this game, you can “dance” (well, at least your avatar does) to an impressive variety of popular songs ranging from Korean bands like Super Junior to Chinese singer, JJ Lin; to even famous English artists like Taylor Swift and Adam Levine. You can also customize your character with an equally amazing variety of clothes and accessories, have fun challenging other players to “dance duels”, watch other perform, get hitched with a fellow player, join a guild, or enjoy the many mini-games the World of Touch has to offer.
Gameplay
To begin building your career in World of Touch as one of the best dancers they have ever seen, you’ll first need an avatar to play with. The character creation process is really simple. You get to choose a gender – male or female, and one of the three preset feature that you like the most. Note that since these presets generally look about the same, and that you can customize your character almost right off the bat once you get into the game, you might want to just simply choose one and hop right in.
World of Touch can be pretty daunting for players who have never played a rhythm-based game before, so thankfully, the game has tutorials to help. Even if you have played such games before, I’d highly recommend you play through the tutorial just in case. You can also get a feel for the controls before actually jumping onto a stage and start performing.
Although you can customize the controls as you like, the default controls (arrow keys) in this game is surprisingly easy to grasp. It gradually increases in difficulty by either introducing 1 or 2 new moves that you’ll have to memorize for every new song difficulty you unlock, or by simply increasing the speed at which the keys appear on the screen. You mustn’t slack off though – the game has a combo system in place and if you do happen to miss a key, you’ll lose your combo and be penalized pretty heavily in your score.
Accuracy is also a very important aspect in its gameplay. Getting a “Perfect” hit will always award you with more points than getting just a “Nice” or “Good”. Need a quick tip? I’d suggest you get into the groove of the music as fast as you can because the keys do follow the beat and if you get it, you should find it much easier to hit all “Perfects” in your combos. If you have fired up the combo bonus, your keys will become electrically charged and this is where you can earn a ton of points if you make sure to hit all the keys.
I would like to point out as well that the controls in this game is really smooth and responsive. So, aside from the possible problem of latency, you shouldn’t be able to blame it on your bad keyboard if you miss a key you thought you’ve hit. All of these are also coupled with some really nice effects and dance moves which so happen to match the hip music you are dancing to, so there’s that as a bonus!
However, I’ve noticed that if you stumbled and miss a few keys, your dancing avatar doesn’t miss a few steps in his/her routine. I find this a tad bit unrealistic and although this is entirely optional, it might be better if the avatar’s dancing reflects your gaming performance.
Now that you’ve gotten down the basics, you can get a stage prepped up for your debut! The game lobby is where all the action goes down. You can choose to dance on a random stage, or you can create one of your own for free. Creating your own stage will allow you to customize it, say you want to make the stage private, or that you want to limit the number of spectators. You can change the background of the stage too.
Being the owner of a stage will also allow you to choose which songs you’d like to dance to… and this is a pretty huge perk in my books. And boy - there are just so many songs in this game. From Taylor Swift and Adam Levine to JJ Lin and BY2, to even Super Junior and Girls’ Generation, you will have access to not all of their songs, but at least most of the popular and more recent ones. You can listen to these music while backstage before choosing one to dance to.
Oh, and by the way, if the songs are grey in color, this only means that you need to level up and move to a better stage (the normal stage rather than the beginner’s stage) to unlock. If your stage is not set as private, other players may even choose to join you on stage and have a little friendly competition with you, as opposed to simply being passive spectators.
As the World of Touch is also a virtual world game, you can cash in on the money you’ve earned from dancing and spend it at the shops. The clothes and accessories you can buy are pretty varied in this game and you can purchase items for both the adult sized version of your avatar as well as the baby (child-sized) version. Unfortunately though, many of them are only available for RC (premium currency).
Even if you could find a suitable and affordable item that will cost you credits (normal game currency), you’ll quickly realize that these items have multiple purchase modes depending on the duration you’d like to purchase it for. You can opt to the permanently own the item, but that will cost you quite a lot of credits, something that a new player will definitely not have. So, I guess it’s good you at least can earn some free wearables by completing easy missions.
Aside from dancing, the game has some fun mini-games for you to play too. Some of them require RC to join, but there are a few which are free to play for a limited number of times per day. The game is also very generous in the sense that you can collect a ton of freebies simply by logging in and playing the game. You can get some extra stuff if you topped-up (spend real cash on the game) as well.
Items that you don’t want or need can be sold to the vendor for a small amount of cash or you can try your luck by selling it at the trade house.
Don’t forget to check out your own personal information page either! You can update it with a photo, and some personal details like your age, horoscope, and country. You can even choose a title to equip if you already have one unlocked. There are plenty of other features in this game as well, including weddings (you can marry a fellow player that you really like)
If you love the game and would like to spend some real money on it, you can do so by buying RCs or purchasing a VIP membership - it’s tiered by the way, so you can earn more perks the higher you go. You can also get a monthly card, which will grant you free Credits, by simply topping up.
Community
Despite the lower player population, the game is doing pretty well for an aging game. The community here is really friendly as well, and will compliment you if you’re doing particularly well on stage. Interestingly, the game has a guild system which serves to group like-minded people together so they can play together. However, being a guild member comes with some commitments, such as the need to donate (credits or RCs) to advance the guild and being active.
Graphics/ Sound
The graphics in the World of Touch is pretty alright for a game as old as this is. It may not fair well against a newer and more recent game though (if there’s one) since the visuals do seem a bit frayed at the edges. The dance animations, on the other hand, look perfect to me (a non-dance expert) as well.
In terms of sound, this game has the best quality dance tracks around. Of course, not all of the songs provided are the fast-paced kind – there are a few that offers you some really nice slow-dancing experience instead.
Conclusion
World of Touch goes by many names over the years but the reason it has been around for so long is how entertaining it is to play. In addition to being quite challenging (try acing Sorry, Sorry by Super Junior on your first try), the gameplay feels extremely smooth and responsive – criteria that are crucial to a game that places a lot of emphasis on accuracy and reflexes. The community in the game is still as friend as ever despite having a much lower player population than before.
This is a game that manages to fill in a niche in the musical gaming community and it does its job well. If you’re looking for a free-to-play dancing simulation/virtual world game like Tap Tap Revolution, you’ll like this one for sure!
