Summary

Spellweaver is an online free to play collectible card game that features a deep gameplay with elements of quest progression from online RPGs. Its card game mechanics featured some inspiration from popular games such as Magic: The Gathering while some are very original for the card game genre. It also features some single player and multiplayer content to cater to both casual and competitive audiences.

Gameplay

Spellweaver tries to combine game elements from popular card games like Magic: The Gathering and with its own unique game rules to provide a really deep and engaging gameplay that is easy to learn but hard to master.

Starting off in the game, you will be brought to a series of tutorial missions; one for basic mechanics and the other for advanced rules. The basic tutorials let you get a hang of the basics in playing the game, from taking turns to attacking monsters and how to activate your cards. Advanced tutorials explain on the certain behaviors of cards as well as the special abilities of Heroes that can be activated and many more. What also makes the tutorials good as an introduction is that whenever you made a mistake in executing your moves, that particular turn will reset to give you another chance to complete it correctly. Unfortunately you don’t have the opportunity to edit your own character, as you will be using different decks that features different heroes.

Playing Spellweaver is easy especially if you have played any recent online card games or even the classic Magic: The Gathering card game. The rules is simple; you must defeat your opponent by depleting its hero’s health to zero, you lose if your hero get defeated. Each turn you can draw a card and use any of the available cards from your hand to play. There are different types of cards, from shrine cards to creature cards, artifact, hero and spell, each of these types play specific functions and playing them at the right moment can lead to a victory.

You need mana to cast a spell or summon a creature, in order to gain more mana, you must consume shrine cards, however there are two functions for the shrine card and you can only pick one effect when consuming a card, it is either your add an additional mana or increase the rank of your hero, increasing rank allows you to use powerful cards that require a higher rank to be activated. Creatures have an exhausted phase when summoned, making them unable to attack or block at the turn when it was summoned, blocking can be assigned before the combat phase starts, giving you more time to strategized your defense.

There are some original mechanics that can only be found on Spellweaver, once of them is the speed ability. Each creature card has specific speeds that are categorized into three. If the creature has 3 speed bars, it will become unblockable to creatures with less than 3 speed and the only way to block its attack is by using a creature with the same speed. Another is the hero skills, midway in a game, when you use a specific shrine card, you can customize the skills of your heroes to have different strategies for your cards.

Spellweaver features a story campaign that lets you take an adventure in different missions and learn more on the lore of the game, it will also give you some experience on the mechanics of the game. You can also customize your deck by using the cards that you have earned from rewards or purchased from the premium store. You can purchase booster packs to add new cards to your collection or build up a new deck, however you may need to spend real money for the packs, but these are all optional as there are other ways to earn cards.

Community

The game is still on its beta phase, so there are more contents to be included in the future, so there are just a handful of players active here. You can compete with them for a friendly match where both parties will not get any penalties for losing, or they can go competitive to the next level with competitive matches and improve your ranks on the leaderboard.

Graphics/ Sound

Spellweaver does not feature any full 3D creatures that appear in the game area, instead your cards will have some nice animation effects to give some life to the battle. The artwork on the cards has that distinct fantasy-themed look that you usually found in western RPGs and it was a spot on for this game. The musical tracks also has that grand epic tune from fantasy games and some relaxing tavern-themed tracks to keep it balanced.

Conclusion

Spellweaver is a promising card game that combines the old yet familiar game mechanics with some very original features to make it a refreshing experience to veteran card gamers. Those who are new to the genre will not be discouraged as the gameplay is quite easy to learn but difficult to master. The visuals may be simplistic but still provides a great presentation to keep it from being boring.
