Summary

One of the most popular stories we’ve heard as children is The Hare and the Tortoise. It’s a classic; anyone who went through daycare or kindergarten has undoubtedly listened to this story. The exploits of both animals and the moral story they deliver (to kids and adults) are well-known. After all, fables are fun, and the cute characters help them become more relatable to the kids.

If you’re someone who wants to relive this classic tale, then Running Fable is your best bet. The game reimagines this classic story into a fun, family-friendly experience. Now available on the Switch, it is a unique racing experience where you don’t cross the finish line first to win but also by scoring points through smart and strategic trap-laying. It’s a nice twist on the racing genre where even if you place second, you still have a chance to win, thanks to the point system.

So, should you dive into Running Fable and give yourself a head start? Let’s check out what it has to offer:

Plotline

Running Fabe does not exactly have a set story or a plotline to follow; instead, it focuses on the races. However, it draws clear inspiration from the age-old and well-known fable of the Hare and the Tortoise. There are two types of characters, which are the, of course, the hare and the shell-riding tortoise. Yes, we know the selection isn’t varied, but you will have access to various cosmetics that will help you set your chosen character apart from others when you go online.

Gameplay

Running Fable’s gameplay revolves around two key phases: trap setting and racing. Before every race, you and up to nine other players or AI-controlled opponents enter a trap-setting phase, adding some strategy to the gameplay. To get this done, you’ll be presented with a grid-based map of the racing circuit and an inventory of items with buffs, healing items, and traps. You can place them afterward and have the option to make them visible or invisible. However, it’s important to note that other players can also pick up your buffs, while you could also trigger your traps.

After this, you’ll dive into the main part: the race. These are relatively short at two minutes, although they feel a tad longer than that. You will either play as the tortoise or the hare; unlike in the fable, there is no speed difference between them. Moreover, they have a similar move set, which includes boost, jump, and attack. The main difference is their unique moves - hares can glide by spinning their ears, while tortoises can ride their shells like skateboards. Players must frequently utilize these moves, considering it is the main way to evade traps and navigate hazards like bodies of water and narrow bridges.

One thing that sets Running Fable apart from other games is how players can achieve victory. Winning doesn’t just involve getting past the finish line first; you also need to score and accumulate points. This can be done if you’re able to catch other players with your traps, which makes it important to remember where you placed them. By using this method, players don’t just have to concentrate on being the first animal to cross the line - they also need to attack and carefully navigate the racecourse to avoid untoward incidents.

Overall, Running Fable’s gameplay loop is quite excellent and can keep you entertained for hours. It does have a few issues on the Nintendo Switch, like the inconsistent attack registers, but nevertheless, it is fairly well-made.

Community

If you’re planning to play online against friends or random players in Running Fable, you need to have a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, which is a requirement to play online on the Switch. You’ll also have to contend with the rather low player count. Thankfully, you can take on a handful of AI players instead.

Graphics/Sound

In terms of presentation, Running Fable looks excellent on the Switch, and given its setting, it uses a kid-friendly aesthetic. The characters and cosmetics are quite cute, while the environmental design is rather vibrant and colorful. The overall art style and graphics fully capture the cute nature of its setting, while the menus are fairly intuitive.

The audio is upbeat and child-friendly, complementing the game’s fun and whimsical nature. The sound effects, like the trap activation and character-related sounds, don’t disappoint.

The sound design in "Running Fable" complements the gameplay nicely, with cheerful and upbeat music that matches the game's lighthearted tone. Sound effects, such as trap activations and character movements, are well-executed and add to the overall immersion.

Conclusion

Overall, Running Fable is a fun, well-made, and unique take on the popular fable while providing exciting gameplay with a unique twist thanks to its trap-setting and point-scoring mechanics. It’s no Mario Kart, but it provides a fresh experience that emphasizes smart and strategic gameplay that deviates the focus away from racing. Although there are a few issues, it’s still a must-have in your gaming library.
