SNK is undoubtedly one of the longest-existing video game companies today. Although it isn’t exactly as popular or well-known as household names like Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, Bandai Namco, and Bethesda, they’ve been consistent and produced countless arcade games for decades. Some of their most well-known franchises are Metal Slug, King of Fighters, Fatal Fury, and Samurai Shodown. Apart from this, they’ve also created arcade machines. If you were a regular in those establishments before, you’ve likely played on one of their devices.

However, little did we know that the company also produced a pair of handheld consoles - the Neo Geo Pocket and Neo Geo Pocket Color. They tried to rival the Game Boy but were outmatched; both consoles were discontinued. Nevertheless, they had a massive library of dozens of games.

Neo Geo Pocket Color Selection Vol 2 is essentially an emulator and a package of 10 games rolled into a single video game. You will be able to play up to 10 games by choosing among the cartridges on the selection screen. The games are a mix of several genres, each providing a different flavor, keeping things fresh and varied. Some may be different from your first options, like the King of Fighters board game and the SNK and Capcom card battler. Regardless, give them a chance, and they’ll grow on you.

There are three sports games in Neo Geo Pocket Color Selection Vol 2 which stand out from the rest of the cast. These are Baseball Stars Color, Pocket Tennis Color, and Neo Geo Pocket Cup Plus Color (a football game). Though they lack long tournaments and are mainly one-match experiences you can easily pick up and play, they were ahead of their time. I got invested in the baseball game since it was a massive upgrade from the original SNES game. Though not a sports experience, there’s also a wrestling game perfect for old-school racing fans.

Apart from the sports titles, there’s Biomotor Unitron which is an excellent RPG and a title that deserves a remake. You’ll play as a character joining robot battle tournaments in a world mixed with futurism and medieval fantasy. The card and board games are SNK vs. Capcom Card Fighters Clash and The King of Fighters Battle de Paradise. Both are spinoffs of popular franchises, and even if they don’t have the usual action-packed fighting gameplay, they’re fun. Another game that stood out is Mega Man Battle and Fighters, where you play as the titular title and proceed directly to fighting bosses instead of going through challenging levels.

Being essentially an emulator, Neo Geo Pocket Color Selection Vol 2 excels in streamlining everything, and it enables you to jump in and out of games seamlessly. It features the necessary features like save points and a rewind function which comes in handy if you don’t want to repeat levels. However, it’s important to note these games are relatively dated - the difficulty curve may be a little high, and getting in the groove may take a while.

Neo Geo Pocket Color Selection Vol 2 does not have online multiplayer, though it has local co-op. Its approach is relatively creative - it splits the screen horizontally, and both players can use one of the joycons.
