Summary

Valentine’s Day is one of the most anticipated holidays of the year. Personally, it doesn’t mean anything to someone who doesn’t care about it, but hey, it’s the day when couples express their love for one another. Public displays of affection via chocolates and bouquets are everywhere to the point where you wish there were a Valentine’s Day version of The Grinch. Jokes aside, there’s one love-themed title you wouldn’t want to miss, which is the Him & Her Collection.

Being separated from the one you love is one of the most painful things in the world, and this is precisely what is happening in the games in the Him & Her Collection. This is a 3-in-1 video game package containing all three titles in the Him & Her. There are almost zero changes to the original gameplay, and the game is a reasonably simple yet challenging experience.

With that said, you’ll play as either Him or Her, the two central characters in all the games, and guide them back together over dozens of levels. If you’re looking for a pretty decent heart’s day purchase, should you give Him & Her Collection a shot? Let’s check out what it has to offer:

Plotline

There’s not much of a story in all the games in the Him & Her Collection. There are no cutscenes or any sort of dialogue between the characters. Instead, everything is left to the player’s imagination. The lack of story elements may put off potential players, but it’s a good thing if you’d like to dive into the action right away.

Gameplay

At first glance, Him & Her Collection feels like a typical platformer. If you’ve seen the screenshots, we’re sure you’ll be of the same mind. After all, it’s a 2D game that looks comparable to most of its sidescrolling peers.

However, this can’t be any farther from the truth. Him & Her Collection is a 2D puzzler where the ultimate goal is to reunite two lovers separated by the melancholic and ever-changing terrain. The themes of love and longing are a significant part of the game, and for reasons that have yet to be disclosed, they find themselves separated at every level. It’s like they’re trapped in a seemingly-endless cycle in a world determined to keep them apart. In order to keep them together, you need to find a way to get one of the protagonists (who you’ll get to play as) to come over and come into contact with their partner.

Sure, the overall goal sounds relatively simple, but the means of how to reach it is anything but straightforward. The world they’re in twists and turns and changes orientation when you jump off a platform and land in a new spot. This helps immensely to avoid spiked traps and other obstacles, but you’ll need to be careful since doing so might cause you to land on another unsuspecting trap. Thankfully, the controls are fairly straightforward; all you have to do is jump or move from side to side.

Every level in the Him & Her Collection requires you to adjust and change the world’s orientation to meet your goals. It takes a lot of brainpower to solve all the problems considering that, as you progress, there will be new challenges along the way. For example, you’ll be introduced to moving spiked creatures, switches, and secret paths to find. It increasingly becomes complex, and unfortunately, there are no guides or hints to help you out. Things may get a little frustrating, but once you get the hang of the gameplay, you’ll be all right.

Though it looks like there are two players in Him & Her Collection, it’s only a single-player experience.

Graphics/Sound

In terms of presentation, Him & Her Collection has a rather distinct art style. The world itself is a dark, melancholic place with unique and intricately-designed levels. The traps and switches are easily visible and noticeable, meaning you can quickly interact, find, and avoid them without problems. Meanwhile, the character designs are pretty simple and minimalistic, yet they pop out and thoroughly contrast with the world. The same can be said about the music, which complements the atmosphere the game tries to convey.

Conclusion

Overall, Him & Her Collection is a fun yet challenging puzzle experience that doesn’t cease to impress. It’s gripping and challenging, and though it doesn’t exactly have known story elements, you still can’t help but relate to the plight of the two lovers. In turn, you’ll do everything you can to get them back together.
