Summary

XCOM Legends picks up the story sometime after the second game, and its unique, downloadable content expanded a lot of things post-launch. It puts you in a position to command a highly trained and specialized group of individuals in defense of the planet. This team is composed of humans and other sentient civilized alien species. Earth has become a melting pot with multiple civilizations forming an alliance championing peace and prosperity. The organization has moved its operations from a human defense to an intergalactic peacekeeping security force. Such peaceful times won’t last forever, though, as remnants of hostile factions sponsored by a new mysterious entity will do whatever it can to cause havoc and destroy all that is good.

Plotline

The plot is comparatively just as straightforward as in the previous installments. A new dangerous threat with mostly unknown capabilities rears its ugly head and begins operations to destabilize society. The XCOM initiative is brought in to respond to the escalating attacks and investigate the cause. This is not the same team you worked with before, no longer a band of guerilla fighters trying to take back their home and also not just a souped-up multicultural special weapons and tactics squad in charge of responding to police threats. The player is now in command of the most high-tech and hyper-trained fireteam of operatives ready to take on any situation imaginable.

The story starts as Alpha Team engages enemy troops after getting reports of hostile alien activity and unknown artifacts being activated. Everything is going as planned, bad guys falling left and right, until it takes a turn for the worse. A portal of some sort emitting huge gravitational forces decides to open up and swallow everyone near its vicinity. With Alpha disappearing without a trace, the title finally drops you into the proper gameplay task to bring them back and identify the reason for such events.

Gameplay

People were surprised when the details of the mechanics were released. Instead of following the path of its mainline predecessors, the developer decided to change things up. A first in the franchise, XCOM Legends was developed to be a mobile roleplaying game with gacha mechanics. Battles are fought in a JRPG-like scenario, with each character acting in turns. In these moments, they can use various special skills to either buff teammates or negatively impact the opposing team. Proper risk management and tactical thinking are required, like in the SRPG versions the previous games used as a system. Operators and their equipment are both acquired through gacha rolls. As players complete missions, they are rewarded with tickets to spend on recruitment and item procurement. Speaking of the units for a bit, when you receive multiples of the same character, these can be fused together in a fusion mechanic, allowing to have their base statistics to increase at specific increments. This will be their main source of development.

The progression of the story campaign can be seen on the main lobby screen. It is a map overlaid with icons representing mission locations. After that, the next tab contains an upgrade mechanic for the commander affecting everything in the game somehow. Another noteworthy thing included for quality of life improvements is the IDLE system. This will allow players to earn resources and currency even if the game is on standby and you do not have a lot of time to sink into it. It conveniently reminds you to collect the loot gathered through notifications popping up on your home screen.

Community

Although it was still locked in the course of the review, there have been hints of a multiplayer guild creation function. Events and challenges could be tackled with friends in future updates.

Graphics/Sound

Visuals in this iteration of the beloved gaming series are surprisingly decent. Models for the units resemble the quality of the main title games. It is presented in full 3D, and you can view the character from multiple angles, each sporting loads of detail. There are a lot of different armors and species represented visually. The textures are highly detailed, giving life to these models at the same level as those of consoles and PC. Colors are vivid and the palettes used are more diverse than in previous installments. Players will be treated to bright special effects and colorful items. The user interface is intuitive and avoids confusion about its functions.

Sounds in this title come with all the bells and whistles. Voice acting is top tier, they could not have included any, but the developers went the extra step so that the story can be enjoyed in a more immersive manner. Explosions, gunshots, and even unit reactions are all audibly decent. You can find out what is happening thanks to the sound cues available. The background music fits the theme perfectly, giving off a science fiction military vibe throughout with a mix of suspense and intrigue.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this is a solid and a good entry spinoff for those who are fans of the franchise. It may not be strategically deep as the others, but it provides a sensible amount of a mental challenge. Roleplaying fanatics are not left wanting as well, thanks to multiple progression paths.
