Word Forward

Summary
Word Forward is a fairly challenging, word puzzle game whereby the goal is not to make the longest word or even to find the rarest ones – it is to clear the board of all letter tiles by strategically forming words with the letters given. The game also provides plenty of help if you need them, though if you want to get a Gold star for every level, you’ll want to avoid relying too much on the aid given.
Gameplay
As an avid word puzzle gamer, I have to say that at first glance, Word Forward seems similar to many of the free-to-play word puzzle games that flood both Google Play and the App Store… you know, the sort where the goal is to make sure you use all the letter tiles on the board by chaining them up to make words.
Chaining is easy enough – just drag your mouse cursor to link up the letters. Though, sometimes, you might accidentally select the wrong letter. In that case, simply right-click to cancel. In case you forget, the game also helpfully provides a list of the controls on the right side of the screen. There’s even a “how to play” guide that you can access via the settings in case you need a refresher.
To clear an entire board of letters, it might be obvious that the usual strategy of finding the “best word” might not apply here. Instead, you’ll need to plan ahead your every move just to make sure you can use all the letters. Since the minimum number of letters for a word in this game is 3, you’ll want to ensure that you don’t leave yourself with only 2 letters at the very end.
Not to mention, the letters need to be adjacent (diagonally counts too) to be available for linking and the order of the letters matters too. As you play, you'll encounter new challenges as well, such as tiles that can only be linked in a certain direction. These are all factors you’ll need to consider when planning the best way to solve a level.
Thankfully, the game provides a host of helpful tools that you can use. The most common one is the letter swap tool. You’ll start with a few “swap tokens” which will allow you to swap any 2 letters of your choice as long as they are on the board. The letters don’t have to be next to each other for this to work.
You’ll also earn more swap tokens by making longer words. 4-lettered word is the minimum you need to get a new swap token, though 5-letters will earn you 2 tokens instead. I assume 6- or 7-lettered words will net you even more tokens! This means that letter swapping is as cost-free as it can get in this game so you’ll want to use the tokens as often as you can. Though, I should also point out that the game neglects to inform you during the tutorial that you can only have a maximum of 5 swap tokens at any single time, so make sure you use your tokens before earning some more!
In addition to letter swapping, there are tools at the bottom of every level that you can use as well. The game will provide, for instance, 2 fresh letter tiles that you can replace any letter tile on the board. You’ll also get a bomb tool to remove a single (offending) letter tile and a refresh tool that will generate new random letters for all remaining tiles on the board. There's even an undo option that will allow you to undo a single move.
This last tool is my personal favorite – it’s what I call the “blank tile tool”, a reference to the blank tile in Scrabble. This also means that this tool will allow you to select any letter tile on the board and turn it into a blank tile where you can then choose which exact letter you want. It has saved my skin many times on several levels now and I’m sure it’ll do so for all the levels to come!
In a way, when you take the help given into consideration, the game feels a lot chess-like than your typical word puzzle game and this is what makes Word Forward such an intriguing game to play!
Unfortunately, as helpful as the tools may be, you might want to use them sparingly since you can only use up to 2 out of the 5 before you’ll lose your chance to get a Gold Star for the level. There’s no extra benefit to getting a star though, so if you don’t really care about such things and just wanted to enjoy playing the puzzle, then feel free to carry on, but for those who do, you’ll want to keep this in mind when strategizing your moves.
Word Forward comes with 500 levels so, considering the amount of time you’ll be spending in this game, solving all the puzzles, and likely resolving them just to get the star, the asking price is pretty much worth it.
As a bonus, the game is also available for purchase on Google Play and the App Store. Interestingly, the price for the game on both platforms is the same as the one on Steam. This is a delightful surprise since most mobile-ports on Steam cost a slightly or a lot more than their mobile counterparts without really justifying the cost increase. Basically, you’ll be getting the same game at the same price regardless of which platform or device you decide to buy the game on… and that’s great!
Graphics/ Sound
Being a word game, Word Forward features a clean interface with minimalistic aesthetics… the way I (and I reckon, most avid word puzzlers) like it! The letters are also large enough so even if you have poor eyesight, there’s really no need to squint. The music is also catchy and fun to listen to, especially if you’re into techno music. Personally, I would have preferred something more mellow. Still, it’s not too distracting, but if you want to mute the music, the option is there in the settings.
Conclusion
Although Word Forward doesn’t add much to one of the many existing formats of word games that are already out there, the stuff it does add manages to help the game stand out. With the variety of strategic tools that you can use, Word Forward feels so much more flexible as a puzzle game since there are many ways you can go about clearing all the letters and solving the puzzles. Plus, the price is perfect for the levels and playtime it can offer, and as a nice bonus, you can even choose which platform and device you prefer to play the game on!
