Summary
Cook Serve Forever is the brand new IP to the popular cooking simulator series, Cook, Serve, Delicious! In this game, you’ll follow the journey of an aspiring chef, Nori, as she makes her way to the coveted Couteau d’Or, hosted by none other than her idol, Chef Rhubarb herself! Will she be able to defy all odds and make it to the top of the culinary field?
Plotline
Nori has always been a chef at heart. Inspired by the greats, including her idol and celebrity chef, Chef Rhubarb, as well as her own mother, she grew up into a food vendor, selling her own spin on familiar recipes from within her cozy food cart in Moraine, an increasingly-dilapidated shanty town.
One thing led to another and Nori, along with her housemate and partner, Brie, were forced to move from her own rental. However, this time around, Nori decided to start pursuing her dream in the glitzy city of Helianthus. After all, the once-in-a-decade event, the Couteau d’Or, is finally returning, and like Chef Rhubarb always say… be no less than the best!
It’s really now or never for Nori and with her partner’s (and your) support, they might just be able to make it!
Gameplay
The gameplay in Cook Serve Forever is very different from the other Cook Serve games. If you’re a massive fan of the first three games, you may find the gameplay here boringly casual, uninspired, and perhaps even disappointing.
However, if you’re anything like me who have found the Cook Serve Delicious games a bit too difficult to get into, you’ll love the simplicity of Cook Serve Forever, the ease in which you can dive into a recipe and get “cooking”, without having to memorize recipes or scramble about to press on the keys associated to said ingredients as you prep the dish.
At its core, Cook Serve Forever is still a time management game like the previous three titles. You’re still expected to prep the ingredients, and whip up the customer’s order as fast as you can. Every step of the cooking process involves a kind of a tap-based mini-game – think rhythm games but easier – where you’ll need to tap on one of four arrow keys (or controller buttons, depending on your controls of choice) in a series to move on to the next step, with the occasional multiple-key taps interspersed in.
Accuracy is also important here, since it’s tied to your combo streak, which translates into more XP points earned at the end of the day, but aside from that and the little time wasted repeating the steps, which may annoy your customers, there’s not much in terms of penalty… that is unless you messed up so much that the customer left the queue. Plus, you can add more time to the order timer simply by prepping ingredients, which you’re supposed to be doing anyway.
Unlike most time management games, money isn’t the main factor you open shop every day here though. Instead, you’re given some amount of XP tokens at the end of the day. The tokens will level up the area where you’ve set up shop. Reaching level 10 for an area will earn you a cool location sticker while maxing out the level at 20 will net you the coveted holographic sticker. To be honest, this part of the game is quite grindy and if you don't really care for the stickers, then there's really no point XP-grinding away at the locations once you've unlocked the next one.
You can earn more XP tokens if you add more challenging perks during your shifts. You see, the day is split into three main Shifts, with each shift having a perk that you can choose out of the three given. Perks here are usually additional challenges that you can tack onto your daily routine to spice things up, sometimes by quite a bit. You could, for instance, upgrade multiple ingredients, turning the typically simple prepping process into their slightly more challenging versions, such as having the “NOT” versions of each key.
Reaching certain story milestone, which also comes with a well-animated visual novel element, will unlock a new area. There are 5 different locations besides Moraine which functions more like a tutorial zone with its two areas, with only West Helianthus being available for now. Once the game’s officially launched, the four other locations, each likely housing around 11 areas as per West Helianthus, will be made available.
Cook Serve Forever is really very early access for now and as such, the game currently has a few hours’ of content. The gameplay’s pretty solid already though and if you’re looking for a much more casual take on the typical Cook, Serve, Delicious! formula, this game might just be right up your alley. However, if you’re expecting more of the same from the likes of Cook, Serve, Delicious!, this new game might still be worth a try as long as you temper your expectations.
Graphics/ Sound
The graphics have definitely seen an upgrade here, thanks in part to the game’s new visual novel treatment. The backgrounds and scenes look absolutely gorgeous, and the food look so good on screen… they’ll make your mouth water! As it is iconic of the game franchise, Cook Serve Forever also features a selection of chill and mellow tunes that you can enjoy while you prep and cook a variety of dishes.
Conclusion
Cook Serve Forever is the latest spinoff of the popular cooking simulator series, Cook, Serve, Delicious! This fourth title from Vertigo Gaming’s Cook Serve series offers players a more casual taste of a reinvented and greatly simplified Cook, Serve, Delicious! gameplay, complete with an inspiring story about an aspiring chef and breathtaking visual novel art. For players who have found the previous Cook Serve titles too difficult to get into, Cook Serve Forever is definitely one game that might be worth trying!
