Plotline

LOUD: My Road to Fame features a wholesome story featuring a teenage rocker who aspires to showcase her skills to the world. Follow her journey from her humble beginnings of playing a broom-guitar in front of her mirror in her bedroom to finally realizing her dream of playing in front of a massive crowd at one of the biggest music festivals and getting her big break.

As part visual novel as well, the story segments come with images and texts, complete with voice acting. These segments are told in a “dear diary”-like manner.

Gameplay

As a rhythm game, the gameplay here is fairly simple to grasp – there are only three things you need to do: 1. You need to hit the notes (stars) by pressing the corresponding keys (if you’re playing on the keyboard like I did) as they reach the end of their respective paths on the guitar necks; 2. You need to hold the key down whenever you see a long note… at least until the note ends; and 3. If you see a thick, red wavy line snaking its way down the guitar neck, better get ready to mash that key on your keyboard until the line ends.

Of course, this is always easier said than done since there are six keys/notes you’ll have to always keep an eye on. Plus, if you play on higher difficulties, you can definitely expect more closely-placed notes as well as moments where you’ll need to press on multiple notes at the same time. Needless to say, things can get pretty hectic at some point.

Unlike some of the story-driven rhythm games you may have experienced, like The Fantastic Kitty Rue, the action rhythm part of the game is split into distinct chapters with each chapter housing several levels, so they don’t really blend into each other as you play. Know that the game has three difficulties in total as well, with the easier two being unlocked right from the start, namely Chillin’ and Skillin’. Once you’ve successfully completed a level on Skillin’, you’ll then unlock the Grindin’ mode and really test your mettle.

There are also three bonus songs that you can unlock once you’ve reached a certain milestone in the story. However, these bonus songs can only be accessed via the Free Play mode and they only come in the toughest difficulty level there is. It would definitely be nice if easier difficulties are available for these bonus songs though. And yes, if you’d like to replay a certain song to get that coveted S+ rating, the Free Play mode is the best way to do so.

Missed a note or two? Well, for easier difficulties, you are given a nice amount of leeway in terms of how many notes you can miss. However, there is also so much leeway to give. If you missed too many notes, you’ll earn a strike and one of the “Xs” at the top will turn red. Getting three red Xs will bring up the game over screen, forcing you to restart the entire song.

Progressing the story also unlocks new guitars and outfits for your character. You can then mix and match the guitar and the outfit you like the most for later levels.

LOUD: My Road to Fame is a rhythm game that manages to appeal to players on both sides of the proficiency aisle, working great as an introduction to newcomers to the genre, thanks to its tutorial, but also offering hardcore rhythm gamers some truly challenging tracks to grind through. If you’re a fan of rhythm games and enjoy a good wholesome story about helping a teenage rocker achieve her dreams, then this game is, without a doubt, a must-play!

Graphics/ Sound

Aside from its story and the incredibly fun gameplay, LOUD: My Road to Fame also nailed these two aspects right on the head – its graphics and music. As a fan of rock music, it’s undeniable that this game has some truly impressive rock music that every fan would love to jam to. Featuring 21 tracks in total, every track you hear in this game is also produced in-house by Hyperstrange, the developer/publisher’s very own rock band. They are 100% original from start to finish. Granted that most of them are instrumentals only (no vocals), the tunes are, in your character’s own words, “Fire!”

The visual novel part of the game also comes with A-grade voice acting. The excellent performance made the character and the story so much more immersive and believable. In fact, near the end of the story, you would likely be rooting for your character to finally get her big break!

Now, as amazing the tracks are, as part of the gameplay, your character will comment on your gameplay performance as you tap on the keys, whether it is to groan at a missed note or congratulate you on a streak well-done! These vocal comments interfere with the music and some players may not like that. Due to this, if you’d just like to jam to the music, you might want to get the game’s soundtrack DLC instead.

Sounds aside, the game features a graphical (and font) style that matches perfectly with the fairly angsty - teenagers, amiright? – theme. The comic book-like visual effects light up the screen constantly, giving you, the player, regular feedback as to how well you’re doing and whether or not you need to step up.

Conclusion

LOUD: My Road to Fame is a truly astounding, Guitar-Hero-like action rhythm game with a wholesome, coming-of-age story about a teenage rocker who aspires to showcase her skills to the world. Not only is her journey inspiring, but the game also has a gameplay that has been meticulously fine-tuned so that every note you hear matches every note you’re supposed to hit. Of course, that's even not including the fantastic visuals and effects, and a song list that every self-proclaimed fan of rock music would love to rock out to.

So, in summary, with an S rank certainty, LOUD: My Road to Fame is our sleeper hit of the year, and we’re sure that many players would agree as well. So, it’s time to go LOUD and rock out to incredible music in this brilliant story-driven rhythm game now!
