Summary

The Fantastic Kitty Rue is a rhythm-based point-and click adventure that puts you into the shoes of an aspiring tap dancer, Felicity Rue, who lives in a 1900s-inspired dystopian world where kids are hauled off to the factory to do labor if they are caught outdoors without an expensive family license. An argument with her dad set off a series of event that led to her and her newfound friend, Zindelo's, determination to make a name for themselves; for the world to see their respective talents.

Plotline

Felicity Rue is a young girl with big dreams! She aspires to become a professional tap dancer and is determined to showcase her talents to the world. However, her father disapproves of her “career choice” and wanted her to get her head out of the clouds, so to speak.

His disapproval of her caused a rift between them, resulting in Felicity running away from home. She met a fellow aspiring performer – a comedian, this time – Zindelo, who so happens to also be the son of the famous magician that Felicity looked up to.

Together, they are determined to prove their respective fathers wrong by putting on a show at a fair in a neighboring town and making their mark! However, things went seriously wrong when they encountered trouble after trouble. Will they be able to finally fulfill their dreams?

Gameplay

As the game’s mainly a quintessential point-and-click adventure, you’ll need to scour the 3D-like scene to find important stuff that you may be able to use for whatever that needs doing. To do this, you’ll need to click on… well, everything that’s clickable to find the items you need.

Unlike some point-and-clicks where it’s easy enough to miss stuff, The Fantastic Kitty Rue made sure you have everything you need, thanks to the goals that are clearly and succinctly listed on the side. There are times when you’ll need to give something to a character by simply dragging and dropping the item. The game also helpfully adds a pop-up to prevent you from progressing if you don’t have everything that’s needed in the next scene or if you didn’t do what’s needed.

Some items aren’t as useful on their own and so you’ll need to combine them with other objects. The game has a helpful Combine button at the bottom where you can bring up the “combine” screen. Here, you can then drag and drop various items from the left to the right in order to combine them. Thankfully, the game makes it simple enough to figure out what should go with what. After all, although you can add multiple items to the box on the right, every combination that’s needed of you to advance in this game only consists of two items.

You’ll also be expected to talk to characters throughout the game, similar to a visual novel in some ways, but unlike some games, the dialogue choices you make here doesn’t have consequences and will not, for instance, close off other dialogue options or cause some trouble for your characters later down the road. The game’s pretty linear this way.

Interestingly enough, the game incorporates rhythm-based mini-games to keep you on your toes. These rhythm games are quite challenging at times, especially for someone who’s not a pianist, requiring you to hold down multiple keys at once in sync with the cues given on-screen. However, as challenging as the mini-games can be, I’ve found that it’s not as easy to fail the rhythm mini-game – I got a comfortable “A” rating across the board.

The game isn’t very long. It only took me 2 hours (or so) to complete the game entirely. You can easily dive back into the various scenes through the game’s Scene Selection option, which would likely be helpful once the game has Steam achievements. You can also hone your rhythm-based key-tapping skills by playing the game’s Free Dance mode. Both of these game features give the game slightly more replayability.

Graphics/ Sound

The Fantastic Kitty Rue features beautiful and expressive character models and a vivid palette of colors. In addition to the voice acting for each of the characters for cutscenes, the game also comes with a plethora of sounds, including gameplay and dialogue cues, which help to further immerse you into the dialogues and occasionally, Felicity’s thoughts and observations that aren’t fully voiced.

That said, there’s a visual discrepancy for Felicity and the playing card memento she hung around her neck in the later part of the game. Spoiler: She first lost the strap for the playing card but she’s still seen with the strap during the rhythm mini-game where she and Zindelo sung to the Lullaria. She also supposedly lost the playing card necklace but the card is still seen hung around her neck in front of the theatre where they’ve landed.

Conclusion

The Fantastic Kitty Rue is a delightful point-and-click adventure with the occasional and fairly challenging rhythm mini-games that tells a wholesome story of two kids trying to showcase their talents to the world. However, the game can be completed within a rather short period of time, and that, when compared to its asking price, makes it quite the expensive game. It’s probably best to wait for a steep -enough discount before buying this title, especially for fans of point-and-click games that are suitable for the family.
