Great art, and simple gameplay

Howrse has been around for 10 years now, since it first appeared in the Internet in 2005.

The reason it stuck so long because it is an excellent horse simulation game. When you sign up, you will be made to choose between a wide range of horse breeds and colors. Have you always wanted to own and breed an Arabian stallion? That is not a problem, because the game has that purebred in the list. You have roughly more than 10 breeds of horse to choose from, and equally that number of coat colors to pick.

In other words, what you want from a horse is what you can find when you play this online horse simulator.

Just because it is 10 years old does not mean that it lags behind other horse sims out there in graphics. The horses are beautifully drawn, and the colors rich and vibrant. The developer clearly put a lot of thought into the artwork in this game. Looking at the profile of your horse could be enough to make you fall in love with your pet, and play this game again and again.

There is plenty of stuff that you can do in Howrse. However, at the start of your horse's life as a foal, you are limited only to nursing the animal until it grows older and stronger. Nursing includes feeding it with carrots, and making it drink water. You can also stroke the foal and groom it before sending it off to bed. All of these actions contribute to the horse's vital statistics, which are its Health, Morale and Energy.

By the way, keeping an eye on the horse's Energy is very important when it gets older than a year and six months. Energy is needed in order to train the horse, so that you can participate in tournaments later on.

From the very beginning, you will be guided by a Monkey at the top of the page. This Monkey will give you instructions on what to do as you nurse your foal and, later, when you train the horse at one year old and later on. Pay attention, because the tutorial will walk you through the things you need to keep an eye on while you take care of the horse.

The Monkey will also give you rewards for completing the Quests, and these include food for your horse like Mash, Oats and Fodder.

Feeding becomes central to your horse's everyday routine. You need to feed it in order to recover the huge amounts of Energy that it consumes during routine training, which consumes at least 30% and as much as 99% of the animal's Energy. However, you cannot just feed the horse indiscriminately because it is going to gain weight. At that point, you will have to back off from feeding it with oats or fodder, and you will have to contend with feeding the animal with carrots or letting it drink water every 15 minutes to recover its energy.

Bedding the horse down will also allow it to recover energy, but if you let its Energy fall below 20%, the horse will only wake up with 50% of its energy recovered. You will have to nurse it back to full energy as well when that happens.

Training the horse lets it build its statistics, which you can view at the bottom of the screen. At 2 years old, if you choose to let your horse reproduce, you will be given a second horse to take care of.

The currency for this game is called Equus, which is rewarded to you via the quests that you complete for your horse. Equus is used to cover veterinarian's fees, to pay for your horse's boarding fees in the Equestrian Center, and buy other Horses.

Passes also give you access to several special items and rewards in the game, but you will have to purchase Passes using real cash from your credit card or Paypal account.

All in all, Howrse is an excellent horse-raising simulator that does not require much thinking and effort from you as the player. Despite that, there is a world of features in store for you when you sign up and take care of a horse through the game.
