Summary
Set in a remote area north of London, Frostpunk is a survival-themed city-building and management game where you’ll need to help the last of humanity build a new home and survive the increasingly cold winter caused by global warming. Playing as the leader of this group of survivors, you’ll not only need to ensure your people are content and alive; you’ll also need to make sure your town is getting everything it needs to prepare for the most bitter snowstorm of all - the final storm.
Plotline
A sudden yet relentless cold snap swept across the world, transforming what was a lush and thriving world into a wintry wasteland within mere days… and still, the temperature kept dropping.
Many died and the remaining survivors decided to pool their resources, build a steam-driven ship, and send their best – the ones who might survive the cold – to the North where a massive coal-powered generator resides; to hopefully find humanity a new and more livable home.
The journey to the location is grueling to say the least and many have died along the way, but it is hope that drives the survivors forward, and now that most of the survivors have arrived at the generator, it is your job to keep their hope alive.
Gameplay
Frostpunk is ultimately a survival-themed city builder and as such, the gameplay here mainly involves managing the resources you gain and consume, making sure your people are kept warm enough to work, and ensuring that you make the most of the time you have to prepare for the final snowstorm that is about to come.
Of course, the preparation process isn’t as easy as it sounds. Aside from hoarding tons of resources, you’ll also need to assign engineers to workshops to unlock new technologies which help a lot to make every building, item, and automation as efficient as you can. And once you have a beacon, you can even send out expeditions who will then venture the frigid wasteland in search of survivors and extra resources.
You can roll out laws as well to either make it easier for you to keep your people alive at the cost of some discontentment, or you could keep your people happy but you’ll find it a lot harder to gather enough resources to heat your buildings and feed your citizens, especially once the cold really digs in its heels.
Frostpunk is a game all about efficiency and in some way, it shares quite a bit of similarities with assembly line/factory games where you’ll need to constantly tweak your build just so you can eke out more product… or in this case, resources and manpower.
Oddly enough though, some players might find Frostpunk difficult to wrap their heads around. The game does have a sufficiently comprehensive tutorial to guide you through the basics, but there are plenty more “strategies” that you can discover on your own. The tons of tooltips helped a lot too and I’d highly recommend you take as much time as you need to read through them. Don’t be lazy to do some micromanaging as well. Sometimes, a little micromanaging can make a pretty huge difference especially early game.
Personally, I find Frostpunk a moderately challenging game, especially once you know how things work. The game is rather lenient in some ways, allowing you to recover from some, but not all, of bad decisions that you might have made.
Not to mention, aside from the main campaign “A New Home”, Frostpunk also comes with several shorter scenarios that are usually tougher to play as well as two DLCs which further expands the storyline and the gameplay to include fun new mechanics and challenges.
Community
Frostpunk has a massive community of fans. You can have fun discussing the game with them or even ask for advice via the game’s Steam forums.
Graphics/ Sound
The graphics in this game is absolutely breathtaking. I love the idea of building an entire city in a circular way with the generator/heater right in the middle. However, personally, I think the composer for this game really went above and beyond. The music that plays in the background especially during the super intense period during the final storm where you’re trying to keep as many people alive as possible matches perfectly with what I was feeling then.
Conclusion
Frostpunk is a revolutionary game that’s perfect for its time. The gameplay it offers is challenging enough to keep me on my toes and unique enough to keep me very much intrigued. Aside from the time constraints which made the game feels a bit like a time management game, Frostpunk will also force you to make choices and those choices won’t make everyone happy. The graphics look fantastic and the game has great music to match as well. Definitely a game worth buying and playing!
