PlayStation Plus Free Games for October 2017
Oct 14, 2017 | 1 Votes

Ever since the highly-opposed price increase, Sony upped the ante and have consistently included solid titles in their free PlayStation Plus games lineup. We’re still reeling from games like inFamous: Second Son and Strike Vector EX from last month, along with the inexplicable avian-romance visual novel, Hatoful Boyfriend. However, October looks to have a more promising lineup with a highly-acclaimed installment of a popular franchise and a collection of horror games best played during Halloween festivities.
Without further delay, here are this month’s free PS Plus lineup:
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Anyone who has played a Metal Gear game knows how fantastic this Hideo Kojima-made franchise is. The franchise is one of the first and the shining example of a stealth game, and MGS V: The Phantom Pain is its most recent franchise. You’ll strap yourself onto the boots of Snake, otherwise known as Big Boss. The game takes place nine years after Ground Zeroes, after Snake awakes from his near decade-long coma. He resumes his hunt for the mysterious and equally dangerous shadow organization, the XOF.
Unlike other MGS titles, the game features an open world approach to stealth gaming, giving you a number of creative options and possibilities to accomplish your missions. Moreover, it’s also one of the best aesthetically-looking games on the PlayStation 4 (and other platforms). It touts photorealistic graphics and a beautifully-crafted world. It also features an online mode wherein you can team up and compete with 16 other players. Countless maps are available, along with weapons and various abilities. This is team-oriented, wherein you and your team will fight and complete missions against an opposiing side.
Amnesia: The Collection

If you’re looking for a game to play to scare you out of your wits during the Halloween season, Amnesia: The Collection contains three of them. The most notable of which is Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Included in the collection are its sequel, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs and the expansion, Amnesia: Justine. If these games ring any bells, you may have heard of them before. After all, The Dark Descent is arguably one of the best and scariest horror games ever created.
Highly-rated among pundits and earning accolades, Amnesia: The Dark Descent follows a man named Daniel, a London native in 1839. He somehow awakens in a castle with no memory of his past. To get his memories back, he has to descend into the depths of the castle and kill the baron, encountering notes and diaries along the way. Along the way, he will encounter grotesque monsters that he won’t be able to fight against. The only options are to flee or hide, giving players a heartstopping experience.
The games feature immersive environments and intricate designs. The Dark Descent was released on PC seven years ago, so it might look a little dated today. However, Justine and A Machine for Pigs are fairly recent, so you’ll probably enjoy the aesthetics. Regardless, if you’re up for playing insanely scary horror games, Amnesia: The Collection is a boon.
Hue

Platformers will never die, whether they’re on a console or a mobile device. Hue is one good example. It’s a puzzle platformer wherein you “shift” the hue of the world, creating rifts and spaces when the colors collide. The game provides a unique experience, especially in the aesthetic aspect. In addition, the gameplay is simple yet quite unique: you can alter the game world by changing the background color. Though it is one of the lesser-known titles in the lineup, it’s a must try for both PS Vita and PlayStation 4 gamers.
Sky Force Anniversary

Like platformers, aerial-based shooters with planes and countless enemies appearing on the gaming area aren’t dead. Sky Force Anniversary is one huge example, a fitting game of the genre, much like classics like Strikers 1945 and Raiden DX. You will play as a pilot who will be fighting against the oppressive General Mantis. This game is a re-creation of the old Sky Force game, which was critically acclaimed by pundits. Today, it boasts beautiful 3D graphics and fast-paced, exciting gameplay.
There are multiple boss battles, intricately-designed levels, and multiple upgradable weapons and modules. In addition, there are also other objectives, like rescuing fallen friends and stranded human beings. It’s also fully voiced and it contains a great OST.
Overall, it’s a great month to be a PlayStation gamer. Sky Force and Hue are both coming to the PS Vita, while Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and Amnesia: The Collection will be on the PlayStation 4. PlayStation 3 gamers meanwhile, will have Monster Jam Battlegrounds and Hustle Kings.
If you’re a subscriber, be sure to get them for free on the PS Store, but if you aren’t it’s probably the right month to be part of the PlayStation Plus community. In addition to all these great games, there’s also RIGS Mechanized Combat League for PS VR, along with a closed beta of Hand of the Gods: Smite Tactics, and party game That’s You!
