Summary

Repair This is a shop sim where you set up your very own phone repair shop but it has an interesting twist. Find a balance between managing a business and earning enough to keep the doors open and the various moral dilemmas and challenges you may encounter in your bid to earn that much-needed extra cash. Interact with characters from all walks of life, including fun references to popular characters from TV shows, comic books, and anime, artists, and memes.

Gameplay

The gameplay in Repair This is pretty simple. Firstly, a customer enters your shop with a broken phone, and you’ll use a pretty magical tool to detect what part of the phone needs replacing - it’s always just one part. There are many parts of the phone that you can fix, be it the display, which is the most common problem for most broken phones you come across, the speakers, the main (mother)board, or the back panel.

You’ll then need to quote a price and a repair duration to your customer. How much to charge and how long you can take to fix the phone depends on whether or not you have the spare part at the ready, and how urgently the customer needs their phone back. Naturally, if it’s an urgent job, you can quote a much higher price in exchange for a faster fixing time. It’s a delicate balance that, when mastered, will allow you to easily get customers to trust you with their precious phones. Note that you can purchase a spare part and have it delivered to you as soon as an hour, though there might be delays if the weather isn’t good. In fact, if the weather is bad or a delivery is faster than usual, the courier might even ask for a tip.

That said, unlike most shop sims, it’s unrealistic to stock up on phone parts at the start of the game. The cost alone of setting this up would make it very hard to have any leftovers for paying rent… and you need to have enough cash on hand to pay rent, or the game’s over for you. Oh, and the landlord can be quite the miser – he will increase the rent exponentially week by week, making it very hard for you sometimes to keep up.

Thankfully, you can get a loan from the in-game bank if you find yourself in a bit of a pickle. Yes, the interest can be pretty high but that little injection of cash might just be what you need to keep your business going, and to tide it over until your customers come pick up their phones and pay you for your repair service.

Now, as you might expect by now, Repair This isn’t just a phone repair shop sim – the game features a Papers, Please-inspired twist, putting you in various moral dilemmas where the outcome of your decisions, as tough as they can be, isn’t as apparent… and sometimes, things really don’t go the way you want. For instance, in this game, you’ll occasionally get special “requests” from some people to access your customers’ phones, which you can do after fixing their phones, and obtain information or data, including incriminating evidence like a text message or a photo, or simply a person’s phone number, in exchange for a nice lump sum of cash.

However, sometimes, the evidence you get might end up being used to blackmail someone as opposed to putting them to justice. In the worst-case scenario, what you procure might end up killing someone who’s the actual victim in the story – I’m so, so sorry, Vanessa!

Aside from morality-driven events, you will also get challenges thrown your way. They can come in the form of a ridiculous customer asking for something that you don’t sell (and then leaving a bad review online, impacting the number of customers you get the next day), or a literal daylight robbery where getting back everything has stolen can be quite tricky… the tip here is NOT to give him any of the parts you have stashed, especially if you have a lot, which I did at that point.

Once 10 pm rolls around, you’ll then be able to close up shop. If you received any business cards or invites during the day, you will then be able to decide what to do with it at night after the day’s summary is done with. Sometimes, you’ll get the option to renovate your shop, slightly increasing the chance of getting new customers for a price, or you could get an invite to join someone at the café across the street and have a good time winding down.

One of the highlights of the game is the incredible amount of fun mainstream cultural references… that is, if you can spot them. From characters from hit TV shows, anime, and comic books to popular artists, games, and memes, you’ll likely have an entertaining time trying to see if you can recognize them all.

Graphics/ Sound

Repair This features comic book-style hand-drawn art complete with bold outlines. The design of the phone analyzer may also bring Fallout’s Pip boy to mind since they feature similar font type, style, and background. In terms of sound, the game features a handful of chill background music that’s looped throughout the business day. There are plenty of sound effects as well, some of which help to create some form of ambiance, such as the pitter-patter of rain.

Conclusion

All in all, Repair This is a brilliant addition to the handful of Papers, Please-style games that are out there, like Not Tonight, giving players who have enjoyed the former the opportunity to explore other games with similar gameplay with dilemmatic decision-making. The many references further increase the appeal of the game, making it a must-play for fans of Papers, Please and other games within this niche yet increasingly-popular subgenre.
