Summary

It was only a matter of time before Magic: The Gathering’s rich lore and massive universe were expanded into a different experience. I mean, come on, making it a solely CCG franchise is a waste.

Thankfully, the people behind Cryptic Studios pitched in and developed Magic: Legends, an action RPG title where you get to play as a Planeswalker. With a gameplay style akin to games like Diablo and Path of Exile, you’ll get to explore Magic’s many worlds, interact with familiar characters, and battle against familiar foes you may have seen if you’re an ardent Magic player. It’s an enjoyable and well-made free-to-play experience with microtransactions, enabling you to buy powerful items that require a long grind for real-world cash.

So, should you dive into the planes dive into Magic: Legends? Well, before you do, let’s check out if this spinoff lives up to the main game.

Plotline

In Magic: Legends, you’ll take the mantle of a Planeswalker who somehow ended up in the Meditation Realm. Without diving too deep into spoilers, you’ll immediately interact with Ral Zerek, who is in the middle of comically dealing with a mysterious woman and her many minions. From there, you’ll learn the game’s basics and immediately dabble with the lore.

As a Planeswalker, you’ll then get the chance to weave past and explore the various planes present in the world. These places range from Shiv, a volcanic land inhabited by ogres and goblins, Gavony, a province where settlements are constantly under threat from werewolves and the undead, and Tolaria, a relatively safe academy in a tropical area where wizards gather. There are many places to explore, NPCs to interact with, and missions to perform, giving you a massive chunk of Magic lore to enjoy.

Gameplay

Magic: Legends is like a brighter and more fantasy-focused peer of Diablo and Path of Exile. Instead of dark fantasy, you’ll be brought into a living, thriving world with numerous locations. In a way, it manages to take advantage of the world and lore of Magic: The Gathering and turn it into a fantastic action RPG. However, this isn’t to say that the game is a clone of its more popular peers. It manages to set itself apart from others thanks to a variety of card-based gameplay mechanics.

You’ll first get to create a character based on the schools in Magic: The Gathering. Aspiring players can get to choose from Planeswalkers like:

- The Geomancer, which commands earth and fire.
- Mind Mage, which uses psychic powers and telekinesis.
- Beastcaller, which uses might and savagery along with animal companions.
- Sanctifier, a mage specializing in healing and dealing searing light damage to enemies.
- Necromancer, a dark mage using curses and the undead.
- Dimir Assassin, a silent stalker who focuses on dealing combos.

All classes have their skills and capabilities, along with monsters and beings they can summon to aid them in combat. Moreover, each has its own play style, so your experience will be vastly different depending on the type of Planeswalker you want to be. Also, note there is a vast selection of customization choices, so you’ll have a full say on how you want your character to look.

Playing Magic: Legends is a mix of playing something like a MOBA and an action RPG. You’ll move across dungeons, visit NPC hubs to upgrade gear and buy new spells, and fight countless enemies while doing quests. What sets the game unique from other titles is its spell cards, which are faithful to the main game. In a nutshell, you’ll assemble 12 cards before a mission, and four are available to use at any time. When you use one of them, another takes its place randomly. Casting a spell requires a fair amount of mana, which regenerates over time. With that said, it’s essential to manage it so you won’t end up not having enough when facing a horde of enemies.

Meanwhile, the controls are smooth and make the game feel like a MOBA. You can activate skills and card spells with the Q and E buttons while using the rest with the number keys. There are countless enemies ranging from horrible plant monsters, huge ogres and giant beings.

Community

Originally planned as an MMO, Magic: Legends is more of a single-player experience with a co-op on the side. Although I haven’t tried the latter yet, you can play with two other Planeswalkers and explore and do quests together. Outside of the game, it has a relatively large community on Reddit and its forums where you can discuss it with fellow players.

Graphics/Sound

In terms of presentation, Magic: Legends exceeds expectations. The game looks great on high settings and runs perfectly fine on a GTX 1060-6GB. Moreover, its environments are pretty detailed, and when you do battle, there’s always an explosion of visual effects stemming from your attacks and those of your enemies. However, these are almost always short-lived, enabling you to focus more on the action.

Conclusion

Overall, Magic: Legends feels more like a start of a franchise than a spinoff of a popular title. It rivals many of its peers and is a must-play for everyone, even those who haven’t dropped into the Magicverse. We recommend giving it a shot, so start exploring the planes!
