Summary
Garfield: Survival of the Fattest is the latest addition to the Garfield series of games released by PixOwl. Here, Garfield and Jon try to maintain a fit and healthy lifestyle in the wild. You get to plant fruit trees, but also have the luxury of cooking food that Garfield actually loves. Get busy with the many tasks ahead and help Garfield and Jon accomplish their own health goals.
Plotline
Jon has decided to join a fitness camp, and he’s bringing Garfield with him. Our feline friend is not too thrilled, and he’s got his own plans to still enjoy his time in camp. While Jon will strive to lose weight, Garfield is going to survive Diet Camp by being the fattest cat in the camp grounds.
Gameplay
You start the game by completing the basic tasks needed for Jon and Garfield to settle in. Click on the exclamation mark on a character’s head to find out what needs to be done. To start a healthy diet in camp, you need to help Jon and Garfield pitch a tent and plant some fruit trees. Fruit trees not only provide fruits, but coins and XP points that help our character level up and buy items from the Shop.
When you complete a task, you get XP points, some coins and Lasagna. Lasagna is used for speeding things up in the game. You’ll also be guided into pitching a Tent, where your Chest (inventory) would be. You can upgrade the Tent in the future to store more items.
Continue to complete the quests as they come, and you’ll soon find more characters unlock, like Jon’s dog Odie and a little mouse named Squeak. They each will give you a task, and it’s up to you which one to do next. You can do tasks simultaneously and view pending or active tasks from the character’s icon on the left side of the screen. Most tasks will have a wait time, and it varies from 3 minutes to 3 hours. If you can’t wait, use Lasagna to speed it up and get the rewards.
When you repair broken buildings like the Spider Cave, you can play mini games once a day. Here you need to squash all the spiders and flies trying to get into Garfield’s lasagna. Kill all as soon as you can to score big. If you want to play again, you can speed up the wait time with Lasagna. If you play well, you’ll get the maximum bonus coins and 1-3 Lasagna/s for each round.
To earn more coins, XP and Lasagna, you can play the Fiesta, which is a big weighing scale icon on the top right corner of the screen. Once it’s filled up (highlighted in green), tap on it and begin tapping several times on the weighing scale until it reaches the top of the meter and lights up the bulb. You get 1 Lasagna for each round of Fiesta. The Fiesta meter fills up when Garfield eats a lot – especially junk food. Fruit trees add little to the Fiesta meter, so be sure to mix in more junk food.
Speaking of junk food, you can cook these when you repair the broken factory or you can buy them directly from the Shop. The Factory only crafts food carts with a certain specialty. For instance, combining apples and wheat produces a Pie Cart, which is another building that produces the said food. Again you can speed up the construction of the Pie Cart with Lasagna. There are more carts that can be made in the Factory, but you have to wait a while for them to be unlocked.
The camp grounds are filled with trees and stones that need to be cleared to have a place to establish new buildings or objects. You need to have enough coins to clear each bush, tree or stone, and it takes a while for large trees to completely clear. If you want to clear the grounds faster, you can buy a character in the Shop named Dicky. For a few Lasagnas, you can buy him to help you clear two obstacles at the same time, so it’s great for those small ones that you need to quickly clear to place a new object.
Another way to earn more cash is to upgrade the fruit trees. You do this by fetching water from the well and watering the trees. The trees will level up when watered with the right amount of droplets, and they’ll provide more fruits, coins and XP points for you. Note that you also need a small amount of coins to buy water for the well. It takes a few seconds for the well to fetch the water you need. As always, you can use Lasagna to speed it up.
This game is a great extension of the comick book, as you would expect from Garfield and Friends. Every so often a comic strip will pop-up between levels and it’s fun to read and have a laugh while playing the game. Some wait times are frustratingly long, considering the rewards you get are a bit stingy. Still, there are many other things to do while waiting for tasks to finish -- or just stock up on Lasagna!
Graphics/Sound
This game’s graphics look great on a smartphone or tablet with HD screens. Interacting with these vibrant images is a great experience on mobile. Animations are occasionally hilarious as well. The sound is also great, but it would’ve been better if the characters speak once in a while.
Conclusion
Garfield: Survival of the Fattest banks on humor, great comic book graphics and a new way to play a farming/simulation game. Although tasks can sometimes take a little too long for a player who has run out of Lasagna, it’s part of the game’s challenge as any other farming game provides. For anyone who are fans of the comic book, or likes a lot humor mixed in with casual building, this game is worth the time and you’ll soon find yourself amused with the world’s favorite lazy cat.
