Summary

Galaxy Pass Station is a space station management game with a combination of Papers, Please-style, and time management gameplay. In this game, your job as the station inspector is to process every intergalactic visitor that comes through your station accurately, only letting the approved ones through. While the visitors are at your station, you’ll need to ensure their needs are all being met and you can even get some extra cash on the side. There are lots of upgrades and technologies you can unlock, as well as new alien species to encounter and challenges to overcome. Will you be able to keep up with the demand and expand your station as needed?

Gameplay

At its core, Galaxy Pass Station is space station management game that’s similar in essence to games like Fallout Shelter. In this game, you’re expected to build and expand your station as more and more visitors flood in. Not only will you need to set up enough (and comfortable) waiting areas for visitors, you’ll also need to make sure they have everything they need to provide the necessary credentials, depending on new regulations that are rolled out.

Of course, regardless of whether your visitor is a robot or a biological being, all of them have needs that you’ll need to fulfill. This means entertainment facilities like claw machines and arcade machines, clean and hygienic washrooms, charging stations, and at one point, you can even set up capsule hotels for visitors to stay in while they wait for their next transit.

The visitors aren’t just passersby, but they can contribute quite a bit of cash, along with other vital currencies for upgrade purposes, to your coffers as well… that is provided that you can give them the best service possible. This ranges from short waiting times for approval to beautifully decorated rooms, to even well-equipped and well-varied facilities. Happy visitors will naturally spend more money and they will even leave your station a 5-star review too, prompting even more visitors to come visit your station the next day.

Purchasing new items or décor in this game isn’t instantaneous, though! You’ll need to place an order – there’s a weight limit that you’ll need to pay attention to – and wait for the items to arrive before you can place them in your station and have your construction drones start assembling them. All of this takes time and money, but if you’re lucky, you may encounter a sales event where everything at the store is 60% off. This is the best time to splurge and stock up on anything you may need, especially décor.

Besides the station management aspect, another critical part of the gameplay in Galaxy Pass Station is its Papers, Please-style element. Although not as impactful nor as dilemmatic as the latter, as the chief inspector of the station, it’s your job to make sure only approved individuals are allowed to travel to other parts of the solar system. Depending on the current regulations, which may get increasingly more complex as you progress, you’ll need to match the faces of the visitors to their IDs, and other biometric-style data, as such a robot’s REG number or a biological creature’s DNA, via the use of a handy scanner.

Just click on two of the same parameters to scan for discrepancies and if there are none, you can move on to the next. Check every important – and potentially falsifiable – information, and if everything checks out, you can allow the person to stay in your station and wait for their next flight.

Although you can automate the ID-checking process via bureaucracy bots, manually checking the visitors is something you’ll likely need to do often. You’ll generally earn more currencies that way and all of those currencies can then go to good use… by investing them into expanding and improving your space station, as well as unlocking new technologies and upgrades. The game features an extensive upgrade tree with multiple categories for different aspects of your station, including the Service sector, drone upgrades, and more.

As you progress, you’ll encounter more and more different species of aliens, sometimes each with their own unique ID-verifying parameters and needs. Plus, as a bonus, unlocking a new species will get you a free figurine of said species to be placed on the shelf of your Chill Zone, which is pretty cool.

As fun as Galaxy Pass Station is for me, I can see how certain players may complain about the tedium of having to micromanage certain aspects of the game, especially at the beginning when resources can be a bit tight. However, as you advance to mid or end-game, you’ll be able to (almost) fully automate the processes needed via a fleet of drones and bureaucracy bots while being able to cater to our visitors’ every need.

Graphics/ Sound

Galaxy Pass Station features pixel-style graphics that look amazingly detailed. You can even zoom in to admire the details yourself if you want, but make sure you pause the game first lest you miss anything important. The variety of facial features for each of the aliens is astounding too... though after processing what felt like thousands of them manually, the aliens’ faces start to blur together as I speed through their ID-verifying process.

In terms of sound, the game provides a selection of sci-fi-themed tunes interspersed with what you’d expect is the constant humming sound of a functional space station. The aliens you process also make some speech-like sounds from time to time, but these aren’t intelligible.

Conclusion

All in all, Galaxy Pass Station offers a unique and addictive gameplay experience, that aptly combines the challenge and fun gameplay of Papers, Please along with a typical space station management game, ala Fallou Shelter-style. If you love playing management style games, this is one game you won't want to miss!
