Plotline

The old king has died and the City of Thrones is now vacant. The people need a new ruler and they need it quick.

Thankfully, the chain of succession happens to fall on you. It’s now your chance to step up and lead your nation to glory. The world of Evony will be yours to claim!

Gameplay

To start playing Evony: The King’s Return, you’ll first need to pick a culture that resonates the best with you. There are 6 cultures in total, namely Europe, China, Japan, Russia, America and Korea, and each of them have their own culture specific feature. For instance, the Europeans have increased troop marching speed while the Chinese have increased researching speed, allowing them to advance their technology much quickly.

Depending on your play style, you might want to opt for a culture that suits you. However, do take note that you wouldn’t be able to revert your decision once you’ve made it. That said, once you’re done choosing, finalize your choice and let’s start building up your city!

The construction process in this game is pretty standard for an MMORTS game. Similar to some MMO strategy games out there, buildings can be built on fixed positions around the city. You are given 1 free construction slot to either build or upgrade your buildings like most F2P games of the same genre, but interestingly, the game throws in another construction slot for free for a limited time. After the time’s up, you can purchase the extra slot for 300 gems (premium currency) for 3 days. Thankfully, you are also allowed to speed up any construction process that’s 5 minutes or below for free.

There are many different types of buildings in Evony and each of these buildings have their own specific roles to play. For example, the barracks, the archery range and the stables will allow you to recruit a variety of units for your army, while the Academy is the place where you can get your scholars to research a wide range of technological advances. The Keep, on the other hand, is among the most important structures in your city. This is the place where you can collect levy from your people, purchase and activate city buffs or change the appearance of your Keep at the cost of some gems.

Developing your city is no easy matter and to do so, you definitely need a ton of resources. Aside from collecting resources from your farms, lumber mills and other production structures, you can also earn a sizeable amount of them by completing quests. Quests in this game function as a guide to help you develop your city. So, basically, you’ll be leveling up your city while getting some free resources along the way! There are even more rewards to be earned by completing daily quests that include single player quests, alliance quests and bounty quests which will be unlocked once you reached the level required.

Now that you have a well-established and stocked city, it’s time to venture out into the world and exert your dominance on both NPCs and other players alike! There are plenty of targets for you to choose from on the world map, ranging from resource spots that you can occupy as well as monsters and other players’ cities that you can attack. Each location on the map can also be scouted, so be sure to make use of this option before rushing in with your army. Attacks cost stamina though. This means you are only allowed just so many attacks per day.

The combat system in Evony: The King’s Return is rather straightforward. You’ll need to select a general, which can be recruited from the tavern, to lead your army, and then choose the number and type of troops you’ll want to deploy. The actual battle will be auto-resolved by the game itself and you’ll have the results of the combat right after.

Aside from generals, you will also have a hero monarch character that you can equip with a variety of weapons and armor which can be purchased from the store. Most importantly though, your monarch will have a talent tree that you can invest his skill points in. The skills in the talent tree are usually passive effects that will affect either your empire, your army or a little bit of both. You’ll need to choose which sort of leader you’ll like to be since you can only choose 1 skill per row.

There are many more game features, especially PvP ones, in this game which only will occur at specific times or during events, such as the PvP throne war. As you level up, more features will also be unlocked, allowing you to truly have control over your empire as you set off to conquer the land of Evony.

Personally, I think many players would like the fact that this game is very generous to its players. Besides online gifts and a wheel of fortune mini-game at the tavern where you can win a ton of awesome prizes, there are also plenty of level-up freebies. Even the premium currency seems easy enough to earn in this game – by the time I reached level 6, I’ve already accumulated over 1000 gems. The game has a tiered VIP system as well. Despite the many benefits given to a VIP, it’s still possible to be a dominant force in this game without being a VIP.

Community

Being a MMO strategy game, it’s not surprising to see that the game places huge emphasis on being part of a team. You could even win 100 free gems (first time only) if you join an alliance!

Not to mention, you’ll gain a ton of perks simply by being part of an alliance. For instance, you’ll be allowed access to the large-scale alliance wars; you can get help from other alliance members to speed up lengthy constructions; you can work with your alliance members to build an alliance city and defend it just so you all could get the alliance-wide buff; and more.

By earning alliance points through donation, completing alliance quests or killing monsters, you can also spend them all at the alliance shop. Increase your alliance honor to unlock better stuff at the shop. You could even use gems to upgrade your alliance’s science tree which includes perks like increasing alliance capacity, construction peed, training speed, etc.

Graphics/ Sound

The graphics in Evony: The King’s Return is nothing short of breathtaking. Best yet, the visuals differ depending on the culture you choose. The same thing goes for the soundtrack you get to enjoy as you play the game. As I chose China, I was treated to a very nice rendition of oriental music. So, it’s pretty obvious that the team behind this game has put in plenty of effort to make sure that you’ll have a unique experience based on the culture of your choice.

Conclusion

All in all, Evony: The King’s Return is a pretty fun MMORTS game where you can play as the ruler of a powerful (and real-life) culture in a fictional world. The gameplay is not very special if compared to the tons of other MMO strategy games out there, but the gaming experience afforded by its perfectly-tailored visuals and music is quite unique.
