Blood Rage: Digital Edition

Summary
Featuring gorgeous graphics and challenging gameplay, Blood Rage is a Viking-themed board game that’s modeled after the original physical version, albeit with a lot more convenience since the AI handles everything and that there is no ambiguity or misinterpretation when it comes to the rules. Earn as much glory as you can and defeat your opponents!
Gameplay
Blood Rage is a surprisingly complicated figurines-based board game to play especially for a beginner. However, the great thing about a digitized version of a game is that there is no confusion over the rules – the AI has everything down pat – you just need to do your part and learn the game.
Learning the game might be a hurdle though since the skill ceiling here can be a bit high so some perseverance is required on your part. Even with the guidance afforded by the tutorial, I still had to play several rounds against Very Easy AIs to learn enough to be able to win a match and this is coming from someone who had to learn Terraforming Mars from the ground up as well and that game wasn’t as difficult to learn as this one. The game, for instance, isn’t very clear about the use of battle cards. I thought all battle cards can be stacked but apparently, this is not true.
Combat is also a tad bit convoluted here and hence, there are many occasions where your opponent will just pull an ace out of its virtual sleeves. Fights in this game come with multiple stages. The first stage will allow you and your opponents to move their figurines from other areas of the game to the one where the battle is taking place as long as you’ve got the points and spots (to place your figurines) to do so.
Once that’s done, all the participants will then choose a single battle card to play. The value will then be added to the total strength of your figurines. Then, there’ll be a bonus round where you can add special battle cards to further bolster up your strength if needed. The player with the highest value will then win the battle and if they managed to destroy any figurines, they will earn some glory points too.
The game also has plenty of other aspects that you’ll really need to know about, such as quests, clan upgrades, the Yggdrasil, and even how to best use your mythical creatures if you bought the DLC as well, if you want to leverage these systems and win a match.
Now, despite all of that, I’m happy to say that the game comes with a pretty detailed Tactics Guide which I would highly recommend all new players to read. It may feel like you’re back in high school again, memorizing textbooks just to regurgitate what you’ve learned on the exam sheets; but trust me, it’s well worth the effort! However, if you’re the lazy sort and don’t mind getting your ass beat by Very Easy AIs, you can try to learn the game hands-on by playing matches.
Blood Rage didn’t have a perfect launch though. During its initial release, I encountered a major game-breaking bug which will basically freeze the game during the transition between turns. I couldn’t even pass a turn when the bug popped up and hence, had to Alt+F4 from the game and start over. Not to mention, the bug appeared in at least two out of the three matches I’ve played back then and that is probably why there are so many negative reviews on Steam.
However, I’m glad to say that the developer probably fixed the bug because I’ve managed to play a few more matches and I didn’t encounter the bug again. So, maybe you’ll need to take those negative reviews, especially those that mentioned the bug is the sole reason they gave a thumbs-down, with a grain of salt.
Community
Like many of Asmodee’s board games, Blood Rage comes with a multiplayer mode and it supports both online and local multiplayer. From what I’ve seen, the game’s online multiplayer is still pretty much alive so you could probably get into a server and subsequently a match relatively quickly.
Graphics/ Sound
Blood Rage has some amazing graphics! I really love how realistic the waters look and it’s also great that the game lets the player zoom in on their figurines just to admire them. Besides the visuals, the soundtrack here is fantastic as well. I’ve always liked Celtic music and this game is marinated in it!
Conclusion
All in all, Blood Rage isn’t the sort of board game that you can take a few hours to learn from scratch and play competently, so new players be warned! That said, the game also has a game-breaking bug, which unfortunately isn’t fixed yet, so I would recommend only buying the game only after that major issue is fixed.
