Summary
PES 2017 (now known as eFootball PES 2020) is the mobile equivalent of one of the most popular soccer games out right now of the same exact name. Developed by Konami, they’ve brought some of the best teams and players from around Europe, Latin America, and Asia, there’s a myriad of popular and world-renowned teams for the player to choose from; with their favourites bound to be available in this F2P soccer game.
Gameplay
When you first play PES 2017, you’re tasked with going through a simple tutorial to get you started in the game. The controls they have you use are simple: use the left side of the screen to move your player, along with the ball; use the right side of the screen by flicking your finger in a certain way to either pass or shoot the ball. In the controls menu you can change between the simple controls and the classic “virtual joystick” which does feel like it has more accuracy to it, because it almost feels like the simple control scheme doesn’t follow your inputs perfectly, which quickly becomes frustrating.
If you’ve ever played a Football/Soccer game or simulation before in your life then everything about PES 2017 will make complete sense to you. The end objective is to get the ball into the opponent’s net more times than they can do it to you; whoever has the highest number of goals by the end of the match wins! In comparison to the FIFA series of football games, PES is known for having a little more fluidity and realism that makes the game what it is today.
A strong part of the game is its selection of game modes, with one of the main ones being building your dream team. In this mode, you start off with a group of unknown players, and must mix, match, and play to win to get the best football team the league has ever seen. Instead of only having an auction to buy and sell from, you’ve got scouts and agents to look around for some of the best young talent to place on your time and while at first it isn’t the most intuitive, it definitely does start to perk up after some time.
There is a fully-fleshed out online multiplayer game mode for players to jump onto, but as of right now, the mode is relatively plagued with issues. When you play online, you’re typically going to encounter lag, regardless of how close or far your opponent is to you, and it ends up happening more times than not. Online would be a great part of the game, I have to say, but it’s such a shame that it isn’t quite up to the standards it should be.
Community
When it comes to community in the PES series, it’s never been much of a forefront for the series, and PES 2017, it seems, is no different to that rule. Other than the online forums that players can access of their own accord, there’s very little community tying this game together inside the actual game and it comes off as rather disappointing, since it gives off the impression that it’s more “all-for-one and one-for-all.”
Graphics/ Sound
Looking at the game from a graphical standpoint just goes to show that even a F2P mobile, soccer game can have plenty of visual fidelity for your chosen mobile device. Obviously, the game doesn’t look as incredible as the console versions, but the typical view of seeing all of your players out on the field as they play a good game of soccer works perfectly as is and doesn’t throw your device into a mini-supernova.
Pretty much all of the sounds are ripped straight from the original console version, but that only brings about the high quality of the audio in this game. Regardless of whether you’re listening to the commentators, the crowd going wild, or even the sound of the ball as it ripples through the air; they are all high-quality sounds that fit perfectly for the game – especially whilst on mobile.
Conclusion
Overall, aside from being based on real life players and the renowned PES franchise, PES 2017 is ultimately the same as pretty much any other popular soccer game out on the iOS or Android store, but with a few refinements here and there to perfect the game to some degree. That said, PES 2017 is one of the best soccer games currently available on mobile devices because of how much it offers to its players, who could quite easily lose hours upon hours on this one game.
For someone who isn’t a particular fan of soccer this probably won’t be the game for you, but if you even have a minor interest in the sport then this game becomes a must!
