Past Cure is a story-driven psychological thriller where you play as an ex-army veteran, Ian, who were subjected to horrific, and definitely illegal, experiments. The experiments gave Ian superhuman powers but at the cost of his brain’s connection to reality. As Ian pursue his only lead to unravel the gaping 3-year-long hole in his memory, he is forced to not only use his powers despite being detrimental to his grip on sanity, but to also consume an experimental drug called Blue to keep the never-ending nightmares at bay.
When Ian, an ex-army veteran, was returning from Syria, he was kidnapped and kept in some secret scientific laboratory as a test subject (a very unwilling one) for 3 whole years. Although he remembered nothing from those years, he was eventually found by his brother, Marcus, a broken man. In addition to the hallucinations while he was awake, Ian suffered from horrifying nightmares where terrifying monsters assaulted him and him ended up dying in various violent and gruesome ways.
Thankfully, Marcus is a doctor and had managed to get ahold of an experimental drug called Blue. Despite not knowing how it does what it does, the Blue pill managed to help Ian retain his weak but solid grip on reality. Marcus had also obtained a lead which may explain what happened to Ian during those 3 missing years of his life.
As you progress through the game, the story will slowly unravel itself, painting a picture of mental torment and the iron-will of an ex-soldier who is determined to seek out the truth. The game also scatters several interactable items around certain locations in the game where you can gather story snippets that complement the main story arc. Be on the lookout for those objects!
As opposed to how the game was marketed to gamers, Past Cure feels more like an interactive adventure rather than a stealth-based action game. The storyline is naturally the main selling point of the game, and as such, it is very well written despite being a tad bit linear (there isn't a lot of exciting plot twists, unfortunately).
The controls in the game are pretty simple to grasp too. There are several instances of combat in this game where you’ll be expected to either sneakily takedown enemies or loudly shoot your way out, but these aren’t really the highlight here since the mechanisms associated to these actions are really simple.
In fact, the gunplay in this game reminds me a lot of the gunplay available in State of Decay 2 – it’s very static since you can’t really move and shoot fluidly. Just don’t forget to pick up ammo – keep an eye out for shiny stuff in the game, be sure to aim for the head and don’t let the monsters reach you.
In terms of stealth, the enemies you’re going up against aren’t exactly the “brightest” since they are content to keep walking their predestined paths, at least until you sneak up behind them and take them down. There aren’t any tools you can use to distract them, and you may encounter glitches at times where the enemy can somehow see around corners. Oh, and you can even engage in some simple melee combat – boxing – with your human enemies at certain points in the game.
However, aside from shooting, boxing and sneaking, there are a couple of interesting features that you can use in your adventure. As mentioned, Ian was subjected to various mental experiments which had destabilized his grasp on reality, but in return, he gained several superhuman abilities. He could conjure astral projections, use his mind to destroy items or push buttons, or even slow down time so he could finish off multiple enemies within seconds. These abilities are not only pretty cool, but they are also very useful in the game.
As a simple, horror-themed interactive story developed by a small team of 8, Past Cure is only able to offer the most basic game features you’d expect from a game of this genre. There isn’t any character progression like you’d come to expect from an RPG, and the storyline can be pretty linear.
There’s a bit of exploration here as well, but it’s restricted to the Marcus’ beach house. At the beach house, you can also enjoy some “mini-games” where you can box an AI opponent at the gym or shoot a couple of rounds at the shooting range in the basement.
Last but not least, Past Cure uses checkpoint-based saves and these saves are frequent enough so that you don’t have to re-run too many scenes.
Past Cure is a strictly single-player experience and as such, there aren’t any social aspects in the game. The game community is mostly concentrated around the game’s Steam page as well, and from what I can see, most players are split when it comes to determining the quality of the game.
For an indie game, the graphics here are absolutely astounding! Couple that with some epic music and you’ll get a game that is incredibly immersive and feels terrifyingly real. In many ways, this game’s graphics and sound remind me of the game, Max Payne, during that scene where Max had to journey through his grief-stricken memories of his murdered wife and daughter.
Past Cure may had caught a lot of flack from its players mainly because it may have misrepresented itself and tried to appealed to the wrong type of gamers. Its stealth aspect may be a pretty crucial part of a certain part of the game, but it shouldn’t be the defining feature since it’s very simply designed and is used in just a small part of the entire game. Instead, if you look at the game as a horror-themed interactive thriller, then you might just be able to enjoy the game as it is and help Ian to finally find peace among the madness.
