Summary

Paradise Killer is an open-world murder-mystery game featuring visual novel-style storytelling, fun puzzles to enjoy, clues to track down, colorful characters to interrogate, and a gruesome mass murder of the council members of the Syndicate to solve. In this game, you play as the sole Investigator on Paradise Island, Lady Love Dies, and your own freedom hangs on the line as you hunt down every detail about the case.

Plotline

A mass murder had occurred on Paradise Island #24 on the eve of the mass migration of Syndicate members to the next and perhaps final island sequence, Perfect 25. The Judge locked down the island hard and brought the sole expert Investigator on the island out from exile, Lady Love Dies whom you’ll be playing as, to help find the truth.

The game starts with a string of events that purportedly led to the mass murder. However, despite the many Syndicate members who were very vocal about how much of an “open-and-shut” case this is, the case still has to be investigated and things might not be as they seem…

Gameplay

Paradise Killer is a blend of adventure and visual novel, featuring a storyline that’s just filled to the brim with mystery. As mentioned, the game starts off with a bang – the mass murder of Council Members as the Syndicate made ready to migrate from the current Paradise Island of #24 to what is dubbed as the Perfect 25.

Since the game is basically set in an entire dimension, Paradise Killer is very generous with every possible detail you might be curious about the game world as well as the many wacky and quirky characters that live in it. You can find out a lot of stuff – you are playing as a dutiful investigator, Lady Love Dies, after all! – by tracking down clues, finding hidden notes, and sometimes, simply by making friends and talking to them when their guard is down.

However, the goal here is to find out what truly happened to the Council Members who are in a situation much like Schrodinger’s cat mainly because since no one could access the chamber due to its strong security, no one could verify that these members are truly dead and yet there is no doubt in anyone’s mind that they truly are stiffs.

This little fact also makes solving the crime so much more difficult mainly because you’ll first need to gain access to the chamber by cracking the three seals and what you have access to for at least 80 to 85% of the game are basically other pieces of evidences that as I found out, provides plenty of conflicting information that isn’t as easily verified.

This is where the game’s emphasis on forging good relationships with each of the characters… ahem… suspects comes in! It’s crucial to stay on their good side – well, as best as you could anyway – just so you can make each of them open up a little more and give you the help you need to crack the case wide open. Different characters will react differently to what you say and it all boils down to their personalities which you’ll need to find out yourself, whether by simply talking to the person or talking to others and gathering info about said character.

Being an adventure game that’s just filled with hidden stuff to find, the game also hides a whole lot of useful items in the most unsuspecting places, such as in cabinets that you can open or on apartment floors that aren’t as easily accessible. However, being as close to a god as you can be in Paradise Island, you can survive some impressive falls in this game so go hog wild and try to leap off buildings just to access some location with some hidden loot.

Community

Paradise Killer is a single-player game but this doesn’t mean you can’t discuss the many plot points of the game with your fellow players via the discussion forums on Steam.

Graphics/ Sound

The graphics in Paradise Killer is truly unique even by visual novel standards. The art style here is refreshingly unique and matches with the overall quirkiness of the game world and the setting. I particularly love how well-designed the world is and how much fun it was checking every corner for hidden items.

Conclusion

Without a doubt, Paradise Killer is in a class of its own! Yes, it is essentially an adventure game with visual novel elements and a strong investigative theme much like Ace Attorney (though you aren’t playing as a lawyer in this game), but it manages to bring all of these elements together and couple it with some truly impressive world-building to create a world that looks and feels mind-blowing to the player.

Of course, without giving anything away, I just want to say that the plot twist at the end is amazing too. It’s not completely unexpected but the way that plot twist was introduced caught me pleasantly off-guard.
