Navy Field 2 is a massively multiplayer online real time strategy game and the sequel to the original Navy Field game where you control warships in a large body of water in an epic deathmatch battle. You will be able to helm some of the famous warships from the World War I and II eras, ranging from destroyers to carriers and submarines. You can fight against other players in a large-scale battlefield in two game modes.

The game takes place in a fictional world during the period between World War I and World War II where they wage battles against rival countries in their effort to end the long war.

Navy Field 2 focus primarily on naval battles in the open sea, so only naval ships and fighter planes deployed from carriers will be available in the game. And considering that this is a strategy game, the gameplay is fairly easy to catch up if you have played previous warship games as the basics in naval battles are retained. However those who are new to this kind of genre will need to take some time reviewing the in-game manual for further explanations.

At the start of the game, you get to choose from the four countries (North America, Germany, Great Britain and Japan) where each has their own type of warships that are unique to one another, as these countries have a colorful history in regards to naval warfare. After picking your country, you can select your preferred captain of your ship, take note that there will be no significant changes on which captain you will choose, so it is advisable to pick one that has a portrait that you like.

Navy Field 2 lacks any tutorial, so if you are a newbie in the game, you will have a hard time playing the game as you need to read the entire game guide to learn more on the basics. There are no quests that encourages players to experiment on the game which is a let-down especially to new players who are used in having constant rewards that will encourage them to play more.

The controls in the game feature two modes, the automatic and manual mode. In automatic, the controls are simplified to make it easier for new players to enjoy the game without the complexity of manning a warship and can focus more on attacking the enemy. In manual mode you will have more control over your warship, from the angle of the shots up to the turning of your ship for a flanking attack, players who are experienced with naval games will be familiar with the controls and will have better grip to their ships during combat.

There are a ton of warships that you can choose, each having their own attributes and attack methods, you can use a submarine and make a surprise attack on unexpected enemies from behind or fly out a squadron of fighter planes to take down a massive destroyer. Each warship has its own strengths and weaknesses that will make a balance in the gameplay. You can purchase new ships at the store with your in-game currency or real money.

Enhancing your ships can be done at the Ship Tree. It is similar to the research or tech tree in popular MMOs, this allows you to upgrade some attributes of your ship and will branch out to unlock more tech for other ships, so be sure to unlock techs that are important for your ships. You can also assign crew members in your ship, this will help improve the stats and attacks of your ships, some crew members provide special bonuses such as increased credits earned or cheaper expenses, take note that some crew members have durations and you can get more by purchasing them or receiving them from rewards in winning battles.

There are two game modes, the standard elimination game and platoon game. Though all of the game modes are primarily focused on eliminations, but some platoon allows you to fight as a group and it can reach up to 11 players and fight against the opposing team. The maps is large enough to provide tactical maneuvers with islands scattered around the area. However if your ship gets destroyed in a match, the battle will end and depending on the performance, you can earn certain amount of experience points and credits.

Depending on your time-zone, you may have difficulty finding a match if you play in an off-peak hours, as there is only one game server as of this moment, you need to know when the best time to play. There are also a guild feature that you can join to earn special perks and be part of an active group and challenge other rival guilds to earn a higher rank.

Graphics/ Sound

The details of the warships in Navy Field 2 are good enough to help distinguish one from a destroyer to a frigate and to a battleship, but it does not have really impressive visuals to make you wow, but still make the game presentable. The water effects are good enough to make it convincing that you are in a large open sea with detailed islands with small buildings on it. The music features some epic orchestral scores to keep players in anticipation of an epic battle, though the soundtracks were only few and could have added more.

Overall, Navy Field 2 is an interesting naval game that may just rival games like World of Warships, but it lacks new content to keep players hooked. That said, the game features a ton of warships for players to experiment and an easy to play control scheme to keep players hooked into eliminating enemy ships. Although newcomers may have a hard time in getting used to the game, once they master the controls, they will surely enjoy it. If you are looking for a naval game that is easier to start from the get-go, you can try Navy Field 2.
