A new year is approaching, and we, at WWGDB, will be wrapping up the year of 2015 with our list of the top 10 best free-to-play MMO games. So, without much ado, here comes the parade of games!

Number 1: Heroes of the Storm

1. Heroes of the Storm

The first on the list is, without a doubt, Heroes of the Storm (HotS), the unsurprisingly phenomenal success of a MOBA game by Blizzard Entertainment. In HotS, the huge array of immersive worlds that came into being in Blizzard’s many games, as well as the famous characters in them, clash in battle. The game also features battlegrounds that are very uniquely designed, and a shared experience point system which encourages teamwork between players. Not to mention, HotS has carved out a niche for itself in the E-sport arena within merely months of its release. This game most certainly deserves its title of being one of the top Free-to-play MMO of 2015!

Number 2: Skyforge

2. Skyforge

The runner-up to that prestigious title is an epic sci-fi-based MMORPG released in July this year, Skyforge. In this game, you play as a newly-resurrected immortal with an unshakable responsibility to help and protect the good people of Aelion. Have fun switching between classes whenever you like, enjoy the exciting action-based combat, start your own order and gather trustworthy followers, and grow your character from being a mere immortal into a true god in Skyforge!

Number 3: Dirty Bomb

3. Dirty Bomb

Next up on the list, we have a possible successor to Team Fortress 2 - Dirty Bomb. Dirty Bomb is an incredibly fun MMOFPS game that focuses a lot more on completing objectives as a team and taking cover when necessary, rather than just running and gunning. There are many characters on offer in the game and each of them has their own unique weapons and abilities, whether it is to call upon artillery strikes or airstrikes, or being able to resurrect fallen allies and set up health stations. Its card-based character system is very unique and does keep the game fresh and exciting. After all, you’ll never know when you’ll get a character card that you would like!

Number 4: Trove

4. Trove

The 4th position on this list is awarded to this fun-filled MMORPG, Trove. Despite being voxel-based, or perhaps I should say, due to it being a voxel-based game, Trove offers its players the freedom to create whatever they like, in addition to being able to enjoy all the fun elements that MMORPGs have to offer. The best part about Trove though is its amazing player-content. Players in this game are able to create their own deviously challenging dungeons, and with luck, the developers may decide to add the dungeon into the game for all to play. Of course, you’ll also be able to design and build your very own home in this game... may it be an enchanting castle or a humble (but comfy) hovel.

Number 8: Echo of Soul

5. Dragomon Hunter

If you’re not much of a home-builder but more of a monster-hunter, you would definitely enjoy our number 5 game, Dragomon Hunter. In this game, you’ll be assuming the role of a fresh-faced dragomon hunter who embarks on an exciting journey to capture, tame and collect as many dragomons (including “boss” dragomons) as he, or she, can! The graphics and the semi-action-based gameplay in this game are astonishing, and most importantly, the dragomons that you can get can be mounted and showed off to your friends or guildies.

Number 5: Dragomon Hunter

6. Krosmaster Arena

Coming in 6th place is this adorable yet fun turn-based MMO strategy game, Krosmaster Arena, developed and published by Ankama Games. Unlike most conventional strategy games, you’ll get to draft up your own team of Krosmasters, each with their respective and unique abilities. Due to the game’s wide range of Krosmasters available, it’s simply amazing to buy and try out each and every one of these characters... just so you could build an ultimate team of Krosmasters.

Number 6: Krosmaster Arena

7. World of Warships

Released in September 2015, World of Warships has made huge waves, particularly in the E-sports community. The game features impressively and realistically designed modern warships that are not only cool-looking but also deadly... in the hands of a good captain, of course. Navigate the beautiful waters and bombard your enemies with the high-tech cannons on your warships. Hire crew to keep your ship in tip-top shape while manning the guns. World of Warships is definitely a dream come true for war buffs from around the world!

Number 9: Battle Battalion

8. Echo of Soul

Nestled comfortably in the 8th position on our list is this amazing MMORPG by Aeria Games, Echo of Soul. In spite of being a tad bit generic in terms of questing, PvE-ing and PvP-ing, the game offers something that let it stand out from the other MMOs – its amazing soul system. After all, you get to play an awesome Soulkeeper who reaps the souls of your enemies and uses these harvested souls to boost up your own power. If that’s not cool enough, we’re not even sure what is!

Number 10: Triad Wars

9. Battle Battalion

Although the game has invested little marketing and promotional efforts, Battle Battalion managed to catch our attention and landed itself a spot on this top 10 list due to its unique gameplay. It is technically a MOBA game, but it offers players a rather special twist - Instead of playing a character, you get to control a company of units! These units are separated into various types and, of course, different types will have different advantages and disadvantages. Knowing how to compensate for your company’s weaknesses while capitalizing on their strengths, and working together as a team with your teammates are the keys to victory in this game.

Number 7: World of Warships

10. Triad Wars

Can’t get enough of GTA games? Well, you’ll surely enjoy this last free-to-play MMO title – Triad Wars by United Front Games and Square Enix. Set in the gritty world of the game, Sleeping Dogs, this game offers some impressive open-world action as you attempt to rise to the top of the triad of your choice in the underworld of Hong Kong. There is never a dull moment in this game as danger lurks in every corner... and that corner doesn’t even need to be a dark corner. Crime runs rampant in this game, and the fun of being able to endure through all the hardships you face to become a criminal overlord is incredibly satisfying.

So, these are the top 10 free-to-play MMOs that we’ve chosen for the year 2015. How many of these have you played? How many more will you be trying out later? Do let us know and don’t forget to rate this article!

Notable mention: Wildstar was not included in this list as it was technically released last year and had recently switched over to the free-to-play model.

Note: Please take note that games that are currently in Open/ Closed Beta or Open/ Closed Alpha are not taken into consideration, and that this article was written on the 18th of December 2015, so subsequent game releases for the last 2 weeks of the year 2015 will not be included in this list.
