Plotline

One Piece: Legends of Pirates provides a brand new storyline whereby you are now the main character. Be the pirate captain that you know you could be and recruit various One Piece characters to your team.

Gameplay

To start playing, you’ll first need to create your pirate captain. There are 3 classes to choose from as well as 2 genders to select. Depending on your play style and preferences, you can choose to be a Swordsman who has a high physical attack, defense and HP; a Navigator who has high magic attack and defense; or the class with the most balanced stats, a Sniper. Different classes will have access to different sets of skills, both active and passive, but generally, they are pretty much the same.

Once done, you’ll be brought to your very own pirate port where you’ll be doing a lot of your “daily routine” in. This includes collecting your daily stipend (or your “levy belly” as the game calls it) from the Town Hall, upgrading your stats via the Lab Tech, recruiting more pirates from the Inn, go on special Doriki practice quests at the Skypiea, collect free experience points via the Bourg Crystal and more. It is also the center where you can access your instances from.

When it comes to instances, One Piece: Legends of Pirates has a pretty similar gameplay to its predecessors. The game’s solo instances are separated into many chapters whereby you’ll be defeating each notorious pirate captain and their lieutenants and minions so you could collect their bounties. Each chapter contains a few stages, and for each stage, you can earn up to an SSS rating. If you do manage to get the best rating for all the stages within a chapter, you’ll get to unlock special loot chests containing some amazing prizes. There are also quests that you can complete rather easily due to the auto-pathfinding feature it uses.

For the more PvP-oriented players, you can head over to the arenas to battle it out with other players instead. There are 2 types of arena – ranked and solo arena. Solo arena is the lower-stake version of PvP since you don’t really risk anything, except maybe your pride, if you lose. You’ll even win a little arena points in spite of being defeated. However, ranked arena is much more punishing if you lose since your rank will be affected and this will usually result in fewer prizes. In fact, to participate, you already need to shell out 10 premium coins... how’s that for a stake?

That said, combat in this game is rather commonplace, at least among browser MMOs, as well. Basically, you need to assign your pirates into the positions in a formation you chose and you’re pretty much ready for battle. Interestingly though, there are multiple formations in One Piece: Legends of Pirates and you’re actually required to unlock them before you can use the formations. These formations can also be upgraded to unlock more positions, allowing you to deploy up to 5 pirates (including your main character) at a time.

Of course, having a good formation doesn’t guarantee a victory. To really ensure victory, you’ll also need a high Battle Power or BP too! You can increase your BP through a wide variety of methods, including, but not limited to, upgrading your skills and equipment, leveling up your pirates, training your mount, unlocking more passive stats via the Six Powers or the Lab Tech, or you could simply level up your pirate captain.

Most of these upgrades will require specific upgrade materials which can be tricky to find while others may require tons of game cash instead. So, generally, you’ll be spending quite a lot of time trying to find ways to bump up your BP without “bankrupting” yourself virtually or in real life.

There are plenty more features in One Piece: Legends of Pirates such as achievements, titles, and even wings that will eventually be unlocked as you level up. These features will usually give you more advantages against your enemies by increasing your BP or by giving you some upgrade materials that you’ll need.

Community

Joining a guild is an important aspect in this game and as such, you definitely gain a ton (and lose nothing) by signing up for one as soon as you are able to. Aside from being able to play the game with your guildmates, you will also gain access to a wide range of guild-only events and features, such as the fun Crystal Defense, Guild wars and more. Of course, you’ll be expected to contribute in return, but that’s a small price to pay for being in a guild.

Graphics/ Sound

The graphics in One Piece: Legends of Pirates is a lot nicer than its previous versions. This is especially true when you first lay your eyes on your own port. Although it may be a bit crammed, it’s still very beautifully designed!

In terms of sound, the game has plenty of pleasant music that fits the atmosphere intended for each of the scene you’re in. I also like that they didn’t overdid the combat music, unlike some other anime-themed MMORPGs which tend to use overtly loud and rather obnoxious rock music. The sound effects in this game is also very well-done – not too much, or too little; it is just right!

Conclusion

In short, One Piece: Legends of Pirates is your typical anime-themed MMORPG that looks a lot nicer, has a bit more features, and well, it’s based on the popular One Piece universe! If you love One Piece and that you enjoy playing an MMORPG that doesn’t take too much of your time, One Piece: Legends of Pirates is definitely the perfect fit for you. Do give it a try and re-immerse yourself into the pirate-y world of One Piece!
