Before you start a game, or any game in fact, it’s always wise to take a look at its “how to play” section first. This is because some games, or Mahjong Towers in particular, provides tiny bits of twists to the gameplay that change how you play the game.
For instance, in Mahjong Towers, the game adds in coin stones that work much like the season stones you’ll usually encounter in mahjong games as these special stones can be combined with each other freely. However, each pair of these special stones that you collect increases the number of coins that you get per pair of regular stones by 1 for a short period of time. You’ll need to best utilize your “extra coins” boost by maximizing the matches that you can make before the boost timer runs out. You can even stack up the coin bonuses by matching up coin stones too, but do take note that the duration of the bonuses remain the same and are not accumulated.
Despite having coin stones, the game basically retains the usual rules of a standard online mahjong game. This means that, in Mahjong Towers, you’ll need to remove all the stones from the board in order to complete it. Stones are removed in pairs and you’ll need to select two identical stones, except for coin and season stones, to match them up. Stones which are blocked from both sides (left and right) or are stacked on by other stones can’t be selected or removed. You’ll need to clear those “offending” stones before you can access the stones you want.
In addition, there are also season stones, namely summer, autumn, winter and spring, which you can freely combine with each other. Furthermore, the games you play in Mahjong Towers are not time-based, so you can take your time in deciding which tiles to match up... unless, of course, you’re trying to make the most of your coin boost. By matching stones up, you’ll earn coins that will be accumulated as indicated by the bar on the left side of the screen.
Once you have enough coins, you’ll earn a flower. There are up to 3 flowers for you to obtain per level and you’ll need to get at least 1 flower in order to proceed to the next level. You also need to accumulate the flowers you get in order to unlock new towers. For example, the first new tower you’ll need requires 25 flowers to unlock. This is why you should get as many flowers as you can as you play a level. If you didn’t get the maximum number of flowers on your first crack at a level, don’t worry! You can replay the levels as many times as you like in your attempt to get 3 flowers for all the levels available.
Replays are necessary as some layouts in Mahjong Towers can be deviously tricky and very challenging. The layout may hide the important coin stones underneath loads of the other normal stones, so you’ll only get to use the coin boost, when you have less than half, or maybe a quarter, of your tiles left on the board. Thus, if possible, try uncovering all coin stones as soon as you can. Not to mention, you should also tackle stones that are stacked multiple times first as well! This is because, most of the time, these stacked stones are stopping you from accessing the wealth of stones underneath it.
Therefore, if you feel the need, you can always buy helpful boosts from the shop or use the ones that are given to you for free. There are 3 useful boosts in Mahjong Towers which you’ll come to rely on. They are reshuffle, hint and undo. Reshuffle helps you to shuffle your current mahjong layout. It can change a situation where you have no possible moves into the one where you can continue playing the game!
Hint, on the other hand, helps you by giving you an advice on what you should do next. It may show you a random pair of stones that you’ve missed or tell you what you can do to continue playing the game. Undo is very useful when you think you’ve made the wrong move and want to move back a step as it will return the last pair of stones you removed back to the board. You are given 10 free boosts to use, but you can always buy more, if you need them, using real cash.
Playing mahjong alone can be rather boring after some time. Thankfully, Mahjong Towers allows you to compete with your friends! As you and your friends rush to complete levels of mahjong layouts, you’ll get to see who can build their mahjong towers faster. Defeat your friends and stand, all high and mighty, on top of your tall mahjong tower!
There are more than 46 thousand likes on Mahjong Towers’ Facebook fan page! This number may seem small in comparison to “triple A” casual game titles on Facebook, but it’s a pretty respectable number for a niche-based mahjong game. Although the game is still rather active as of current, the fan page seems to be abandoned by the admin of the page. Nonetheless, if you fancy chatting with your fellow players, there are still quite a few recent posts there by players that you can comment on.
Mahjong Towers have really nice and crisp graphics. The mahjong stones or tiles are very well defined and the patterns on them look nice enough. It also provides the English annotation on the top right corner of each tile, which is, frankly, a very nice touch. In terms of music, the game provides an oriental-styled music that is quite upbeat. It does feel like a far cry from the other music provided in many of the mahjong games available online. The game also has some variety for its sound. While playing a game, the music changes to a new soundtrack, but it retains the upbeat feeling you get while you’re at the level selection screen.
Although Mahjong Towers lacks a lot of customization features, such as different themes for the tiles and backgrounds, that made the other mahjong games much more interesting, this game has plenty of interesting and challenging layouts and offers a nice tweak to the standard mahjong gameplay, making it a mahjong game that warrants a try, at least! The game is designed to be relaxing, so the games are not time-based, but it has some fun aspects in it, like the coin stones. Collect flowers from the many levels of mahjong available and unlock new towers to build! You can also compete with your friends to see who can build the tallest mahjong tower first. Sound like something you’d enjoy? Well, what are you waiting for then? Play Mahjong Towers now!
