Plotline

Your grandfather has just died and has left you in his will – his “Secret Garden”. You head straight to the garden and was greeted by Jack Barrow, your late grandfather’s assistant, who had accompanied him on his explorations to distant lands. The garden, once a glorious paradise, now lays in ruin… neglected and forgotten. Now that the garden is yours now, can you restore it to its former glory?

Gameplay

The game provides you with a short and sweet tutorial teaching you the basics of the game. You start off with a nice stack of money, so you can decorate your garden for a bit before you start playing the mahjong games for money!

Buying decoration usually cost you silver (in-game money), though some of the items are real-money only. There are a ridiculous amount of decorations in this game, just take a look at its astonishing variety of flowers, including tulips, crocuses, hellebores, lupines and daisies, and decorative (non-functional) buildings. You can also purchase adorable animals, such as butterflies, cats, squirrel and fawn too, but these animals will cost you real money. There are even many basic tools provided for you to rotate, flip or move your decorative items in the garden.

Each decor you place will give you a small but sufficient amount of energy. These energy points will be accumulated and will help you during your mahjong adventures by allowing you to sail to new islands. Once you’re done decorating your beautiful garden, you can take a snapshot of it and post it to your Facebook timeline to let your friends admire/ get jealous over it! If you’re very confident that your garden is the best and unbeatable, then you could also submit snapshots of your garden to the in-game photo competition. The competition is themed though, so you’ll need to ensure that your garden fits the theme or it may lose votes due to that!

Being a social game, Mahjong: The Secret Garden encourages you to visit your friends’ gardens to admire their garden landscapes and designs as well as gather some inspiration for your next garden makeover! Ran out of space? Well, don’t worry! For the cost of a thousand to a few thousand silvers, you can easily expand your garden! You can also start all over in a new garden by purchasing an extra garden or you could change the wall style of your current garden, so you’ll have a differently-shaped garden space too!

By now, you would already have spent all your money at hand and you’re looking for more money to earn. The only way to earn money in Mahjong: The Secret Garden is by playing mahjong games. To play, you’ll need to understand the rules first. You will need to clear the board by matching off pairs of tiles that have the same patterns. You cannot select a tile which is blocked on both sides by other tiles and you cannot select a tile if there is another tile on top of it either. If there are no more moves available, you’ll get a board shuffle at the cost of time. By clearing boards faster, you can earn more stars and this translates into more money! Do take note that there are 3 stars that you can earn per level.

Not to mention, you can unlock new exotic items from crates that randomly dropped after you've successfully finished a level. However, bear in mind that you've only unlocked the item and this doesn't mean that you are given that item. You will still need to spend some silver to buy the item in order to place it in your garden.

The mahjong games in Mahjong: The Secret Garden are not exactly time based, but as aforementioned, the faster you complete a game, the more points/stars you will get. However, if you cannot get 3 stars for any of the previous levels, you can easily go back and replay the previous games to earn more silver. There will be barriers in between you and the subsequent levels on the island that will require certain number of stars earned to open. Thus, replaying matches to get all 3 stars can be very beneficial to you. After you’ve finished playing all the levels on a isle, you’ll need to use energy points, which you obtained by placing items in your garden, to power up the sailboat and head towards a new island!

At the beginning the mahjong games can be pretty easy to complete. As you progress though, the levels will become increasingly difficult, making getting that 3 stars extremely tough. This is why Mahjong: The Secret Garden offers a range of boosts that you can purchase and use to make your mahjong journey so much easier! These boosts include, show free tiles, show hints, free shuffles and slow timer. The boost, “show free tile”, allows you to see moves easier by highlighting all available tiles while “show hints” boost highlights a random matching pair every few seconds. You can also combine boosts for a big advantage!
