Plotline

The plotline in the game, Magic Flute, is based on the opera of the same name which was directed by renowned Japanese director, Amon Miyamoto. The story features a charming prince, Prince Tamino, who is “recruited” to save the Queen’s beautiful daughter, Pamino, from her captor, the devilish despot Sarasto. With some help from his fellow friends, such as Papageno, the royal bird-catcher, and the instruments gifted by 3 powerful witches, Tamino will need to weather various challenges and difficulties including escaping from a massive spectral serpent and avoiding the patrols. He will need all the help he can get… will you help him?

Gameplay

To start playing Magic Flute, you’ll first need to pick a language. There are currently 3 languages on offer, namely English, Japanese and Polish, at the moment, but it is possible that the developers, Lablike, might add more localization in the future. Once done, you’ll be immediately immersed into the adventure that Prince Tamino is about to embark on.

The game utilizes a rather unique game mechanic that can be interacted with using very simple and smooth controls. By using the powerful “swipe” (or if you play the game on PC, “click and drag”) mechanics, you’ll be able to move tiles to lay out a path that Tamino can use to reach the exit point. Of course, the game provides a host of interesting tiles and obstacles to get the cogs in your brain turning as well as constantly keeping you on your toes. For instance, the game is designed such a way that he can only step on solid and usually white-colored tiles. However, the game also added in quite a lot of grilled tiles that will just get in your, or more accurately, Tamino’s way.

Not to mention, every few levels or so, the game will throw new game elements at you, such as cracked tiles that are like a rickety bridge that is about to fall into a deep ravine, and tiles with extendable ladders or loaded springs that can help him reach high places. As you progress in the game, you’ll encounter slightly more complicated challenges including swiping blocks (not tiles) in a 3-dimensional frame. Some of the blocks can be climbed on while some (pink-colored ones) are not, and there are also some pretty unique blocks such as blocks with a protruding ledge that will allow your character to jump from one side of the wall to the other. It’s simply amazing!

Once you’re introduced to Tamino’s ally, Papageno, you’ll be able to enjoy playing levels where you’ll need to get both characters to work together and get them both to the exit. One of the game elements that prominently showcase this form of gameplay is the colored buttons. You’ll need to alternate between characters easily in order to move them to their respectively colored buttons. By placing your character onto the correct button, it will trigger an event that will for instance, activate the spring board in the game, moving it several rows upward.

There are even fun game scenarios that spice things up for quite a bit in Magic Flute. For example, in some levels, a spectral serpent will emerge and destroy a randomly chosen tile on the map (it’ll be marked in red) and you’ll need to quickly move Tamino to the safe zone (green-colored tiles) before the serpent strikes again. There are also special levels where rocks will fall down from the ceiling, crushing certain tiles in place while preventing you from moving those specific tiles. These special events most definitely add a whole lot of fun to the game, allowing players to give their brain a run for their money.

If you are a perfectionist, you might want to get the maximum number of dots (not stars) for every game you play. Similar to most level-based casual games out there, you can earn up to 3 dots per level in Magic Flute. However, getting those 3 dots might not be as easy as it seems. Being able to solve the puzzle is one thing, but you’ll need to also be fast in arriving to that solution. As each level features a hidden timer, how long it took you to solve the puzzle actually counts... that is if you’re aiming for the highest score.

The best part about Magic Flute is that the game offers non-linear level completion that is not only rare but also very interesting particularly for players who enjoy searching for all the different ways a person can complete a level. This, along with the 3 dots you can earn, boosts up the game’s replayability. For high achievers in the game, you’ll also be glad to know that Magic Flute has a slew of achievements for you to earn and collect as well. The developers have a few ideas in mind for the game’s future, including a level editor add-on for players to craft their own levels for other players to enjoy!

Community

The community for the game Magic Flute is rather small at the moment as it was released rather recently on various platforms. However, with incredible gameplay and plenty of challenging fun the game has to offer, this will soon change. So don’t miss out and be the first of your friends to try this game out!

Graphics/ Sound

The 3D graphics in Magic Flute has a somewhat gloomy backdrop (after all, a princess is kidnapped and well, Tamino is supposed to in the kingdom of the Queen of the Night). The characters are also very uniquely designed. The art style in this game definitely adds to the game’s overall look and feel.

In terms of sound, the game features Mozart’s harmonious music for the Magic Flute opera, and honestly, I think that it doesn’t get any better than this! The game even has fully voiced cutscenes and narration.

Conclusion

In short, Magic Flute is an incredible 3D puzzle game that not only put your puzzle-solving skills to the test, but it’s also simple enough for players across a broad spectrum of age ranges to pick up. The game churns out varying game elements every few levels or so, including new obstacles and enemies, to keep you on your toes. The graphics, music and storyline are very impressive as well. Not to mention, for a mere $3.99, you can enjoy hours upon hours of mind-boggling fun with Magic Flute as you try to figure out various ways to solve the 30+ puzzles in the game. So, if you’re a fan of puzzle games, Magic Flute is definitely a game that you must experience. It is that good!
