Plotline

Moving into a new neighborhood can be a pretty stressful event, but when the neighbor you have seems to like to sneak around his house in the middle of the night, it’s only natural for your curiosity to be peaked.

Despite all the warning bells after spying your neighbor using your trusty binoculars, you’ve decided to break into your neighbor’s home and enter his basement... the apparent center of all the shifty stuff he has been doing.

Will you make it into the basement without being noticed? What will you find there?

Gameplay

Being a pretty unique game, Hello, Neighbor! starts you off with a tutorial of sorts, guiding you through the game controls. The controls themselves are pretty easy to pick up, especially if you are an experienced RPG player. You can also squat using Ctrl and jump using spacebar in this game. These are just some of the controls which the game doesn’t exactly teach you... so, in spite of the tutorial, you’ll still have to figure out some stuff yourself.

In this game, you can also pick up items and bring them with you. To pick things up, you simply need to press F. You’ll have an inventory whereby you can store up to 4 different items regardless of the size or weight of the items, which admittedly aren’t really realistic. That said, you’ll start off with a selection of items to choose from and the items you chose to bring along will actually make a difference and change how you play the game.

Not to mention, the game also offers you an interestingly huge amount of freedom when it comes to how and when you choose to break into your neighbor’s house. You could decide to lure your neighbor out using a ruse and sneak in or you could try your hand at being as silent as a ninja and attempt to stealthily creep into the house through the backdoor. Depending on your style of play, you’ll have very different experience playing Hello, Neighbor! and that’s one of the reasons why this game is so amazing.

When it comes to the best aspect in the game though, its incredibly intense gameplay and advanced AI take the cake... and even the cream and cherry on top! In terms of gameplay, the game uses all the resources it has, be it sound (of creaking floorboards or the shuffling of feet) or visuals (shadows, for example), to keep you constantly at the edge of your seat. It’s in fact quite tricky to stay silent and hidden while making sure you can keep a watchful eye on your neighbor as you try to anticipate his movements and time your own accordingly. Of course, when you are spotted by your neighbor, that’s when the true rush of adrenaline will burst in.

Hello, Neighbor! also features a rather advanced AI, who happens to be your neighbor in this game. How advanced is he? Well, let’s just say that that ruse you did in your first playthrough... you can’t really use that anymore. Your neighbor will not fall for the same trick twice. After all, as the idiom goes “Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me”, the AI will learn from its mistakes the first time around, making your subsequent playthrough gradually more difficult. Naturally, there will be a point in the game where you’ll need to rack your brains to figure out new and more creative ways to breach your neighbor’s house, and surprisingly, that’s actually quite fun.

Within the house itself, there are puzzles scattered around which you can find and solve as well... all the while making sure your neighbor is not just standing right behind you as you do so. Being a free demo though, the game ends once you manage to open the door to your neighbor’s basement. If you’re interested to continue playing the game, you can purchase the game’s early alpha access which also guarantees you a copy of the full game once it is completed.

You should keep in mind that the game’s an alpha and it can be pretty glitchy at times too. However, if you go into the game not expecting too much out of a work-in-progress, you’ll find that Hello, Neighbor! is quite the indie game indeed. At the moment, the developers are aiming to complete the game as soon as they can, but they do have plenty of plans for the game in the (possibly near) future. One such plan includes adding more houses within the neighborhood which you can break into as well. Each house and its owners will have their own secrets and it is up to you to find out what those secrets are.

Community

As mentioned, Hello, Neighbor! is an indie game and as such its player base and community are considerably small. However, the game has a very promising premise, giving it some amount of hype which will gradually draw interested players to the game.

The game itself is still a work-in-progress and it will need whatever feedback it can get from its community. If you have great ideas for the game, the developers would surely be interested to listen. Of course, don’t forget to share this game with your friends too!

Graphics/ Sound

Hello, Neighbor! has brilliant Pixar-styled graphics that fit perfectly with the funnier aspects of the game (If you’ve watched the movie, “Keeping Up with the Joneses”, you’ll know what I mean). It’s also amazing that the game utilizes its visuals and sound to help you guess where your neighbor is or divert the attention of your neighbor as you sneak across the hallway behind him.

Conclusion

Although Hello, Neighbor! is just an Alpha game at the moment, the potentially huge amounts of fun that this indie game can offer is obviously evident to anyone who has at least seen the gameplay video. Not to mention, it’s not every day you could plot how to break into your neighbor’s home, albeit a virtual one, and actually go and carry it out without having to worry about getting caught trespassing and slapped with a hefty fine. Sounds interesting? Well, you can download the game’s demo now and give the game a try. Just remember that this game’s still in its alpha phase, so don’t go into the game with an expectation that’s too high.
