Gunz 2: The Second Duel is the sequel to the popular Gunz online shooter game. It features some of the game modes and maps from the original game but now with more character classes to choose from. It also includes the single player story campaign that can be played solo or with other players.
The game is set in the continent of Astra in the year 1863 AD, during the conflict between the Axium Empire and Republic of Trivia was interrupted with the discovery of Optimite; a new source of energy. Then a mega corporation called the Adam Corp took the advantage of the new energy source and managed to build its corporate empire. The people of Astra then founded the Guardian Sans Frontier to fight against the Adam Corp. The story and lore of Gunz 2 was given more backstory and development compared to the first game to help make it easier to explain some of the features in the game, as well as introducing the campaign mode.
The gameplay was still retained from the original Gunz game, but with minor improvements to make the latest game more polished. You control a character in third person view where you can shoot or slash against enemies, your weapon may vary depending on which character you picked, and some wield sniper rifles while other use sub machine guns and others use machine guns or a massive shield. There are the secondary weapons from pistols to submachine guns and melee weapons from swords, hammers and dual bladed weapons.
Using ranged weapons can deal a considerable amount of damage but the accuracy will diminish when shooting longer or moving, some weapons can deal bigger damage from afar but at a cost of slower firing rate. Melee attacks can dish out massive damage when done in successive combos, but can leave an opening when finishing a melee combo, however melee weapons can deflect range attacks when done correctly. Double tapping on the movement keys allows players to perform dash movements and jumping at the wall can let you do wall runs or wall jumping to reach higher grounds or avoid incoming attacks.
Customization was retained in Gunz 2, but now with more options, you can purchase them via in-game currency or purchase it directly with real money, but some premium items may have time durations that will expire and disappear, the premium items can provide better stats than from the standard items. This is also the same with the weapons that can be purchased. There is even a lottery feature called the Tesla shop where you can gamble for a chance to acquire rare premium items at the expense of crystals which you can earn as rewards from missions or in-game events.
The game modes feature some of the originals, from the usual deathmatch and team deathmatch where you fight against other players or teams and become the best in terms of scores on frags, or you can go fight against other players with a time limit and see who can score more, and then there is also the classic Gladiator match where players can fight each other solo or team by just using only melee weapons. Then there is also the ranked matches where competitive players can fight for the ranks and earn rewards.
The new game mode called Campaign is basically the story mode of Gunz 2, this is where you can learn more about the storyline of the game and meet other characters. It is separated by chapters and can be played solo or with other players. The gameplay is similar that of a horde mode in most online shooters where a series of enemies will be storming to your location either by waves, or when reaching a checkpoint, defeated foes can leave health, armor and ammo power ups to replenish yourself.
In case you get killed in the campaign, you can retry by consuming coins though they are available in limited amounts, otherwise you will fail the mission and lose any acquired exp and money.
There are a ton of Gunz players active when Gunz 2 was released, unfortunately due to the lack of content updates and internal issues with the developer, the community has diminished significantly. You won’t be able to play a game with other players even after several attempts to start any matchmaking sessions, but if you can enduring a couple of minutes more on waiting, you might get lucky and get into a match.
It was a big improvement for the second game in terms of graphics. With features such as anti-aliasing which provides good visuals on the game, it also provided more effects on the physics department such as ragdoll effects. The soundtrack is also great that provide intense adrenaline action to keep the mood high and some voiced audio to add more personality to the characters, though some of the voices featured in the game have an ‘Engrish’ style which can be sound pretty funny.
In the end, Gunz 2: The Second Duel is a fun game with some improvement from the first. It still retains some of the favourite features and added a whole new game mode to add more replay value. However the lack of players that are active in the game will hurt it more as it lessens more opportunity for new players to try it. Hopefully the developers will act fast and provide more new content to bring back the old players and encourage new ones to join the mayhem.
