Summary

Fortnite Battle Royale is Epic Games’ solution to a void PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) failed to fill: it’s available not only on PC, but also on PlayStation 4 and the XBox One. This in turn makes it the only game in the battle royale genre on consoles, effectively making it the ONLY option. In any case, it is a classic battle royale game, the end goal of each game is pretty obvious: be the last man standing.

Though its graphics appear cartoonish, which may put off potential players, it is absolutely as brutal and tense as other BR games. Today, it is free-to-play and available on all platforms (except mobile) and it could probably be your next favorite game. Want to know if it fits your cup of tea? Let’s find out.

Plotline

First off, there are two modes in Fortnite: the Save The World aspect where you build structures and fight off hordes of zombies, and of course, the Battle Royale mode, which we will be focusing on. There is actually no plot or story in the latter. All we know is you will be dropped off into an island via the flying Battle Bus and when you land, it will be every man for himself.

Gameplay

In Fortnite Battle Royale, you can choose to play with a squad, may it be composed of random people or your friends. Unfortunately, there is still no voice chat feature, so it would be close to impossible to talk with your squad, unless if you use a third-party software or the Party feature in the PlayStation. Note that if you play with a squad, other players will be playing with their allies as well. If you go solo, it will be a complete free-for-all: teaming up with others is prohibited (and the game loading screen suggests that it’s a bannable offense). You will dive into the island alone, fight alone, die alone, and if the winds blow to your favor, survive alone.

Matchmaking is relatively quick and easy. All you have to do is signify your intention to play and you’ll immediately be brought into a queue. A match is then formed with 99 other players and you will be brought to the staging ground, and you will stay there for 90 seconds max and wait for the game to start. Here, you can run around, practice the controls, even loot and fire guns, and start a dance party. It’s basically just a lobby, and nothing much happens and whatever does doesn’t impact the game.

Once a game starts, you will ride the Battle Bus and skydive into the island. Once you’re close enough, you will use your glider to give you some sort of control. After you land, your immediate task is to find armaments so you can defend yourself, and at the same time, avoid unnecessary conflict vs other players who are landing around you. Guns, traps, healing items, and other equipment, like shield potions and grenades are lying around buildings, ready to be picked up. There are also treasure chests that contain rare loot: they play a distinct sound, so you will know you’re near one. As the game progresses, there’s the dreaded storm that ultimately shrinks the battlefield. This will inevitably draw the players closer together, making conflict inevitable.

Primarily, shooting is the primary method to kill your enemies, though you can use traps to do the job. Compared to other shooting games though, Fortnite’s gunplay isn’t as refined. In fact, it’s relatively simple. There are factors such as distance, range, and bullet drops to consider, but it’s not as comprehensive as more refined shooters.

What sets Fortnite apart however, is its building mechanic. You can gather materials like wood, steel, and stone by destroying houses, trees, and other structures with your trusty pickaxe. Once you have enough, you can create buildings of your own, may it be to fortify your camping spot or to simply have some sort of shield when you’re ambushed in an open field. It also comes in handy when trying to get to hard to reach places.

Community

Fortnite has a healthy community on Reddit, specifically in /r/Fortnite and in /r/FortniteBR. Here, you can interact with countless fans and player. Here, you can interact with others and pick up valuable pointers en route to your first win. The community is also responsible for posting numerous tutorial videos on YouTube. Fortnite’s official Facebook and Twitter accounts regularly give updates about the game, so you can safely say that the community is robust and engaging.

Graphics/Sound

Fortnite Battle Royale’s graphics are reminiscent of Team Fortress 2, but don’t let that put you off. It’s still full of tactical violence and shooting, and a great deal of strategy and sound decision-making is needed to consistently win. Nevertheless, the character models and world design are fantastic. The landscapes in the island vary, from towns, to a lake, a lush forest, a hilly area, a winding river, and even an abandoned fast food chain. As for the sound, it’s pretty decent, with the guns having their own sound effects and the music is quite fitting.

Conclusion

Overall, Fortnite BR is an outstanding game, and possibly the first of a long line of Battle Royale games. With fantastic gameplay elements and graphics, it is a free-to-play title you don’t want to miss. It’s godsend for those looking for free alternatives to PUBG, especially XBox One and PlayStation 4 gamers.
