From the ashes of the snow, the legendary Snow Queen rises and terrorizes nearby villages with her supernatural powers. One day, she, with the help of her “Beast”, kidnaps all the children in the village, but the villagers were too afraid of the Queen to go after her. You play the role of an investigating detective who arrived just in time to help the villagers with their plight. Will you be able to rescue the missing children and stop the fabled Snow Queen before her sorrow brings upon the destruction of the world in this incredible hidden object puzzle adventure game, Dark Parables: Rise of the Snow Queen?
Two days ago, a massive snowstorm blanketed the region. Under the cover of the snowstorm, the Snow Queen uses a special golden apple to put the kids into a trance to allow her Beast to easily scoop them all up and bring them to her icy palace. As the last snowflake fell, the villagers realized that all the children were missing. The villagers pleaded you for help and you have agreed to help them. Your mission in this game is to find the children and apprehend the Snow Queen. Will you be able to do it?
Before you start, you might want to first head over to the settings to change the difficulty of the game. There are 3 settings available – casual, normal and hard. For casual, hints recharge quicker, there are sparkles that will illuminate areas and items of interest and puzzles are skippable after a short time, while for normal mode, the hint button recharges at normal rate, sparkles occasionally appear and puzzles are skippable after a limited time. For hard mode, both the hint button and sparkles are inactive, and puzzles cannot be skipped. If you’re new to hidden object adventures, you might want to start with casual. Experienced players can instead go ahead with normal or, if you’re looking for a challenge, hard mode.
Then, you’re ready to play. The game provides you with a nice little cinematic to introduce you to the problem at hand and the story that is in play. Tutorials are automatically shown to teach you the basic indicators and controls of the game. For instance, whn your cursor turns into a magnifying glass in an area, this means that you can zoom in on an area to look at it in more detail. Usually, you’ll get to pick up a thing or two that you’ll need to progress in the game.
Sparkles will also appear in certain locations, unless you choose hard mode, to indicate an area of interest relevant to your investigation. Usually, you’ll get to play a hidden object scene in those sparkly areas. Hidden object scenes in this game are a lot different than any other hidden object games out there. Instead of asking you to find a mess of random items whereby only one item is of any significance, you’ll be asked to find parts of the item you need.
Each item is separated into 3 main parts and each part is made up of several components. Once a component is found, the picture of the component is grayed out. When you managed to complete an entire part, you’ll get to see the part as a whole. Once all 3 parts are completed, you can then craft the item, which you can in turn use to unlock a new location and subsequently progress the story.
There are hints that you can use to help you find items that you cannot locate in a scene. Hints are unlimited in use, unless you play hard mode that has no hints, but you’ll need to wait for it to recharge before you can use it a second time. Dark Parables: Rise of the Snow Queen also provides a useful mini-map that pinpoints your current location and highlights areas of interest. You can click it to expand it into a full map as the minimap can be a bit, well, “mini”.
There are even plenty of brain-teasing puzzles that you’ll have to solve along the way. Thankfully though, you can choose to skip the puzzle after some time if you want. However, every skip you make will freeze your hint feature for 5 minutes. Not to mention, if you selected hard mode, you won’t be able to skip the puzzle at all. Granted that not all the puzzles are insanely difficult, but there are some that are really mind-boggling and the skip button helps a lot when all you want to do is just to continue on the story.
As you may notice, some items that you can collect from the various locations in the game (not in hidden object scenes, mind you) are not all usable items. Some are collectibles, such as trophies and planet models, while some are parables. By completing collectibles, which will honestly take quite some time, you will earn some bonus rewards, while by completing parables, you’ll get to read about the mini-stories that are mainly written about the various characters in the game in more detail. You’ll be able to find out how the Snow Queen become who she is today and who the Mountain Beast actually is.

Dark Parables: Rise of the Snow Queen contains beautiful hand-drawn graphics and lovely cinematic. The game also contains excellent music scores, all of which are composed with the theme of the game in mind. This means that the music in this game feels as though it is full of mystery, of dread and of plain eeriness, such as when you hear the chilling voice of the Snow Queen humming a nameless tune.
In short, Dark Parables: Rise of the Snow Queen is an excellent hidden object adventure game that contains an engaging and intriguing storyline.
