Summary

Imagine a world where cities govern themselves and dominate the world. Instead of armies of human beings, they send robot armies with human pilots to fight their battles. This is what happens in CityBattle | Virtual Earth. This futuristic sci-fi first person shooter puts you in command of a robot which you will use in battle. You can select cities from across continents, from New York, Paris, Moscow, and even Tokyo. You may even find your local city and fight for it. After all, people tend to be loyal to their roots instead of the entire tree!

So, should you give the game a try or are you better off investing in other first person shooters? Let’s find out what it has to offer:

Plotline

Although CityBattle | Virtual Earth has an intriguing setting, it is devoid of a compelling story. There are no character or robot type background stories or how the world turned into a city-based society instead of a country-based one. Anyway, the goal of every pilot is the same: win battles for your city, take out enemies. By doing so, you’ll earn rewards and your city will control more Techno Parks which will grant it the ability to pay its pilots more and create better infrastructure. This aspect makes the game feel immersive and in turn, helps you feel like you’re part of something big.

Gameplay

CityBattle | Virtual Earth is an arcade-y first-person shooter and is far from the realistic experiences most developers offer today. You’ll end up using jetpacks and weapons like flamethrowers, laser cannons, and even electric guns to decimate enemy robots into the scrap heap. Currently, there are several game modes like data interception (conquest control) and team deathmatch. Unfortunately, the game does not provide anything new in this regard, so you’re left to play with the standard modes you’ve encountered in other games. Note that there are also ranked and casual modes (which don’t affect ranking).

CityBattle | Virtual Earth has four robot classes, each adhering to a certain play style. Though it’s not as varied as hero shooters like Overwatch or Paladins, it’s enough to give players a bit of variety. The classes are Assault, Phantom, Guard, and Tech. Assault, as its name suggests, is the main damage dealer while Phantom deals damage using smart weapons and stealth. Meanwhile, Guard acts as the tank, and the Tech is the healing and support class. The four main classes branch out to several specified subclasses. For example, the Assault may become a Bomber that soars high above the sky. Note that you can switch subclasses in the middle of battle so you can adjust depending on the situation.

Character management in CityBattle | Virtual Earth is streamlined. You don’t have to individually level up your robots. For example, when your Tech class robot levels up, so will your Guard, Assault, and Phantom classes. The weapon classes are robust and you’ll have many options for visual upgrades. There are microtransactions, but these are only necessary if you want to improve how your robot looks and to quickly level up. Granted, spending real money won’t grant you better weapons and advantages over free players which is fair for everybody.

Apart from the FPS action, there’s also a city-management option. Every city is governed by its citizens and they periodically hold elections to decide who will hold the Mayor’s office. Once the Mayor is voted in, he can select ministers who are responsible for war, architectural planning, and culture. Though this may seem minor in the grand scheme of things, this can determine the fate of your city. After all, great leaders will lead to great cities.

Community

CityBattle | Virtual Earth has a large community, though majority of the players are Russian (this game is developed by a Russian company after all). Unless if you know the language, you’ll have difficulty in communicating with your teammates. Thankfully, the game has an active Steam community. You can find people to play with and discuss the game.

Graphics/Sound

In terms of graphics, CityBattle | Virtual Earth is outstanding. The game was developed using the Unreal Engine 4, and it looks at par with most triple A titles. It is also well-optimised, with little framerate issues if your device is strong enough. The weapon effects are vibrant and though the map variety is lacking, the battlefields are beautifully-designed. The downside in terms of presentation would be the voice acting. The lady’s voice that issues warnings sounds and feels a little off and sounds grating.

Conclusion

Overall, CityBattle | Virtual Earth is an RPG you’d want to play if you’re looking for something fresh and futuristic. Moreover, it’s a game best played with friends. After all, how can any of you win the elections without a solid support base? Anyway, it’s time to get out there and start fighting for your city. The virtual earth awaits!
