There are games that come out every once in a while and have the ability to change an entire genre or even the industry.
Apex Legends is one of those games. It’s a refreshing entry to the concentrated battle royale genre, dominated by names like Fortnite and PUBG. Though it does not offer anything revolutionary, it touts solid and polished gameplay that is a mix of highly-regarded titles like Titanfall and Overwatch.
So, should you join its ever-growing player-base? Let’s find out what it has to offer:
Respawn Entertainment, creators of the Titanfall series, made Apex Legends. Though there’s no set lore or story, the game is set in the same universe as Titanfall and takes place 30 years after the events if the last game, Titanfall 2. The lack of the story is understandable due to it being a battle royale. Though it lessens immersion, we can expect character backstories in the near future due to every member of the cast being interesting.
Apex Legends is a hero first-person shooter battle royale. It borrows concepts from Overwatch and Paladins while retaining Titanfall’s FPS formula. Like most BR games, it follows the loop of drop into a map, loot items from the environment and treasure chests, and duke it out with your enemies. Each game consists of 20 teams of three bringing the total to 60 players.
Currently, the game has a cast of eight characters, each with their own distinct skills and abilities. Six are playable, while the other two (Mirage and Caustic), can only be unlocked through microtransactions or via a long and tedious grind. Character variety is one of the game’s strongest points since every member of the roster adheres to different playstyles. For example, if you want to play as a medic, then go for Lifeline. To be a tank, be Gibraltar. If you want to act as a scout, play Bloodhound or Pathfinder.
The gameplay is extremely fast-paced, comparable to Call of Duty’s multiplayer matches. Firefights are exciting affairs, especially since you’re mixing gunplay with special abilities. There’s also a tactical aspect since you might want to choose a character that blends well with those of your teammates.
The ping mechanic helps in communicating with your teammates. In the PlayStation 4, simply look at a location of interest and press R1. Double tap the same button, and you’re suggesting there are enemies nearby. Note that this is contextual: if you ping a supply crate, a weapon or an item, it will be marked and your character will tell your teammates about it. Meanwhile, if you’re downed and finished off by an opponent, you can still be revived. Your teammates just have to retrieve your beacon and put you in one of the respawn beacons on the map. Speaking of getting knocked down, every character has a cinematic finishing move that kills downed opponents.
Loot and weapon types are divided into several categories. Weapons and ammo are color-coded and divided into several types. Energy, Light, Shotgun, and Heavy. The same can be said about armor and weapon attachments. Legendary or Gold weapons do not have any ammo that can be picked up and they only appear in supply drops and rarely in the environment.
Speaking of which, Apex Legends’ map is quite possibly, the best-designed one among its peers. There are industrial and military bases, residential areas, swamps, and a ruined forest in different biomes ranging from tall cliffs, tunnels, and streams. Though it is quite small, it’s chock-full of details and is better than most maps that are large yet barren.
Given that it’s a free-to-play game, Apex Legends is run by microtransactions. This is fair, yet we can safely say that it’s a little expensive. Items are limited to cosmetics like character and weapon skins, banners, and quips. You gain loot boxes whenever you level up or when you buy them in the store. They also yield cosmetic items. Granted, there’s no pay-to-win mechanic in Apex Legends.
With over 25 million concurrent players, we’re sure some of your gaming friends are getting into the fun. The game has a large community on Discord and Reddit.
In terms of presentation, Apex Legends is top notch and immersive, comparable to Titanfall 2. The level of detail in the environment and effects during combat are a joy to experience. and The same can be said about the voice acting and audio design. You can hear distant footsteps, rumblings of supply drops and airships from a distance. The sound of gunfire echoing a hundred meters away is haunting and in a way, adds fuel to your adrenaline.
Considering how good of an experience Apex Legends delivers, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to say it’s probably the best battle royale game today. It’s the type of game that learned from the mistakes of its predecessors and at the same time, picked up their best parts. Respawn turned the hodgepodge of concepts into a quality and fully-furnished product that could potentially dominate the charts in the months and even years to come.
