8 of the Most Hype-inducing Video Game TrailersApr 12, 2021 | 0 Votes by Mikhail - rate Trailers are more than just a preview of what a game delivers. They’re essentially one of the most critical aspects of marketing an upcoming title. While some fall flat in various aspects, others manage to induce hype and convince viewers to spend their money.
Game trailers can decide whether a game sells or bombs. Like Game of War: Fire Age, others became massive hits due to marketing (and Kate Upton), not good gameplay.
With that said, several game trailers stand out from the cast. Some came from totally successful games, while others, albeit from underrated franchises, gave goosebumps to everyone who viewed them. Let’s take a good long look at some of the best ones in recent years:
Dead Island Reveal Trailer
Quite frankly, the best thing about Dead Island was its trailer. Set on a vacation island where an undead outbreak occurred, the game suffered from a plethora of technical issues, although it has a reasonably decent gameplay loop.
The trailer was essentially a short film, and it covered the transformation of a young girl into a zombie while his family, particularly the dad, tried in vain to fight off a horde. It is one of the most emotional and compelling trailers ever, successfully generating worldwide interest.
Red Dead Redemption 2 Trailer
Red Dead Redemption 2 is, undoubtedly, one of the best games of the last generation, if not the best. Its first-ever trailer that premiered in 2016 showcased the nearly-tamed wildlands of Western America. It is one of the few instances wherein the trailer’s graphics and overall presentation looked exactly like the game.
Total War Rome 2: Hannibal Trailer
Total War: Rome 2’s release was, quite frankly, a disaster. The game suffered from many issues like AI forgetting how to wage war, frequent crashing, and optimization issues. However, Creative Assembly managed to avert disaster and save the game, offering Rome 2: Emperor Edition as a free upgrade after a year.
Rome 2 and its DLCs have fantastic trailers, though the most notable of them all is the Hannibal trailer. It follows Roman senators arguing where to send the manipular armies to counter Hannibal Barca’s movements, one of the greatest generals to have ever lived. It then showed one of his most famous feats: his unlikely crossing of the Alps and into Italy.
Fire Emblem: Three Houses Accolades Trailer
Fire Emblem: Three Houses was undoubtedly one of the best games of 2019, garnering worldwide acclaim. Plus, you would know that the game is good because its fanbase was at peace and had nearly no complaints.
Jokes aside, the accolades trailer showcased the multitude of positive reviews and ratings it received, as well as some of the gameplay and cinematic scenes. Moreover, the character quotes, impeccable voice acting, and music create a blend that induces goosebumps.
Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Released back in 2011, Skyrim is still one of the most influential and most played games of all time. Its trailer, featuring the late Max von Sydow’s narration, who voiced Esbern in the game, shows the Dragonborn fighting one of Alduin’s kin. Moreover, it was our first long glimpse of the land of Skyrim and the epic “FUS RO DAH” shout.
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Kojima’s Trailer
Whenever someone like Hideo Kojima, a guy who should honestly start making movies at this point, makes a trailer, it’s bound to be weirdly amazing. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain’s trailer was no different. It showcased all of the old MGS games in the past and, of course, what the Phantom Pain delivers.
Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown Release Date Trailer
Ace Combat, and aviation games in general, are fairly niche. In a way, Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown helped break the mold, garnering over 2.5 million sales, which is fantastic for a game that was on the brink of being canceled.
After years of featuring a few E3 trailers, they announced they’d be showing the release date trailer in Gamescom 2018. And yes, it is nothing short of amazing. It gave us the most revealing aspects of Ace Combat 7, including its focal plot points, the core characters, and the many planes available. Plus, it also treated us to one of the main reasons why it was delayed in the first place: the song Daredevil, which plays in the trailer and one of the game’s major events.
Battlefield 1 Reveal
A hundred years after World War I’s conclusion, EA revealed Battlefield 1, which gave us a good long look at one of the bloodiest conflicts in human history. It featured brutal trench warfare, aerial battles featuring zeppelins and biplanes, chlorine gas, and the first-ever tank, the Mark 1. Plus, it brought us to the war’s many fronts: from the forests of France, the mountains of Italy and Austria, to the sands of Arabia.
