Summary

In this top-down, isometric and arcade-like shooting game, Zombie Hunter Inc, you’ll get to play the role of an up-and-coming zombie hunter-for-hire. Run through the many exciting and challenging levels in the campaign mode, and save as many survivors as you can... for a price, of course! Each survivor you save will have a direct impact on your storyline, and who you choose to save may change your game experience. Not to mention, there is also an endless survival mode whereby you can attempt to stop the advancing waves of zombies for as long as you can... whether on your own or with your fellow zombie hunters. Applying for a position at the prestigious Zombie Hunter Inc is only the first step to your realizing your potentially successful career of being a zombie hunter-for-hire. However, Zombie Hunter Inc only hires the best, and you’ll need to prove yourself worthy of being inducted into its ranks. Are you up to the task?

Gameplay

After booting up the game, you’ll be presented with 3 game mode options, namely campaign, survival and tutorial, for you to get started with. Being a new player and all, it is advisable to check out its tutorial first prior to going “Rambo” in the survival mode or even in the campaign.

The tutorial covers most of the controls and tips that you’ll need to know as an amateur zombie hunter. In terms of controls, you’ll be using the usual WASD to move your character. To run, you just need to press the left shift key in addition to whichever key that points your character in the direction you need. You can also jump using spacebar. It may seem pretty pointless to jump on an isometric map, but as you’ll soon realized, you can actually use the jump option to kill “crawlers” (zombies that are alive but legless), saving you some ammo.

You can even turn your character around to face the other direction using the “F” key. Interestingly, this unique feature can be rather tedious or unfamiliar for some as games that are similar to Zombie Hunter Inc, such as Zombies Ate My Pizza, often allow players to control the direction their characters’ are facing using the more intuitive and responsive mouse control. In addition, the game also has a double reloading system, which allows you to tap the reload button (the “R” key) once again when the indicator on the reload meter reaches the “sweet spot” for a super-fast reload. If you don’t like the default key-bindings, you can easily switch them out via the settings.

Now that the controls aspect has been covered, let’s now talk about the zombies! Besides the usual “walkers” and “crawlers”, Zombie Hunter Inc provides a huge variety of zombies for you to shoot at, and naturally, different zombies will have different abilities. For instance, there are yellow-suited zombies that can move really fast. There are also “spitters” that spew out a stream of gross and definitely toxic goo that will not only eat away at your character’s health bar, but slow down your movement as well. Let’s not forget about the really hard-to-kill fat zombies that will keep getting back up on their feet after being downed... if you don’t know the secret technique to killing them, of course (No spoilers here – find out for yourself!).

After learning all that you can about the game and your targets (the zombies), it’s time to get into some action! To do so, you’ll first need to “design” your character by picking the type of outfit that you like. There are some pretty interesting outfit choices available in Zombie Hunter Inc; some of them include an outfit that will turn your character into a mafia boss, a construction worker, Robocop, and even Neo from the cult movie, The Matrix! All of these outfits are free, so do go on ahead and find, or mix and match, an outfit that you like before jumping into the fray!

If you’re playing the campaign mode, you’ll quickly notice that there are some differences between what you’ve learned in the tutorial with what you’re currently facing. One of the most prominent differences is that you’re able to interact with the various objects in the game. For example, in the very first level, there’s a secret supply stash that you can uncover by simply moving a bunch of crates aside.

Furthermore, you can get your hands on loads of goodies, mainly ammo, medkits, and cash, which can then be used to trade with other survivors or buy items to decorate the office of Zombie Hunter Inc, by opening up the boots of abandoned cars on the road. Sometimes, you’ll even get new weapons! However, do take note that you can only have 2 active weapons in your loadout at any time, so be sure to pick the ones you like while leaving the rest as backups in your inventory. It’s always best to grab as many supplies as you can, especially when you’re facing down a horde of zombies. After all, you’ll never know when they’ll come in handy!

You’ll also be tasked to save survivors for your boss, Bob, over at Zombie Hunter Inc. Each survivor you save will have a direct impact on your storyline, because different survivors will be able to offer something different in return for your help... uh, I mean, services. Considering that it is almost impossible to save them all, you’ll need to decide who to save and who to be left behind to become zombie fodder. Your decision will alter the storyline and change your game experience. This is actually a very interesting feature as it bumps up the replay value of the game.

In survival mode though, the gameplay is much more similar to the tutorial. Instead of picking up items, you can only get new weapons by buying them through the Z-MART. There is quite an array of weapons that you can buy, ranging from the “okay”-ranked hunting rifle to the gun of mass zombie-killing - the heavy-duty machine gun. There are even supplies and C4 explosives that can help you survive the waves after waves of zombies that are heading your way. The in-game cash you need to buy anything, on the other hand, is credited into your character’s account based on the number of zombies you’ve killed, and how you kill them. Of course, scoring headshots will definitely earn you more cash.

For survival mode, you can choose to play it on your own, like some really badass lone ranger, or co-operatively with your fellow zombie hunters online. For the offline, “lone ranger” version, you can even choose a difficulty, either normal or hardcore, that suits your skill level.

Community

The community in Zombie Hunter Inc is pretty small at the moment, due to the fact that the game was only recently released on Steam. However, with some time and some extra exposure, this is definitely a game that will go places! So, if you enjoy playing the game, feel free to spread the word around and perhaps drag a couple of your friends to play the game with you. After all, it’s always a lot more fun when you’re mowing own zombies with your buddies!

Graphics/ Sound

Being an isometric and pretty much old school-type of arcade game, Zombie Hunter Inc admittedly doesn’t have top-notch graphics that people might be used to in a shooter game. However, the visual designs in the game perfectly show off the game’s tribute to famous arcade shooters, like Alien Shooter, and they do bring up some feelings of nostalgia for some of the older players. In terms of sound, the game features a western-themed music as the game itself is very much western in theme and can really get you into the “gunslinger” mood. It’s also a nice touch to make the music sounds a bit ominous to reflect the dire condition – zombie apocalypse – the in-game world is in.

Conclusion

Overall, Zombie Hunter Inc is a very challenging, fun, and addictive arcade shooter game that fans of old school shooters would definitely love. The game offers hours and hours of fun as you train up your character to become the best possible zombie hunter-for-hire there is while experiencing a storyline that evolves based on which survivor you decide to save. Not to mention, you could even join your fellow zombie hunters in the exciting survival mode, or go solo and see how long you can last against the zombie horde! Sounds like fun? Well, don’t wait – sign up now to join Zombie Hunter Inc as a fresh-faced yet promising zombie hunter and carve out a name for yourself as the ultimate zombie hunter at the company.
