Summary

Plotline

The game starts off with an epic showdown between the protagonist, Yugi Muto, and Seto Kaiba, Yugi’s mortal rival. The duel, not surprisingly, ended up in Yugi’s favor. However, once that’s done, the game doesn’t really elaborate much about what had just happened. Even the supposedly story-driven campaign doesn’t offer any sort of storyline for you to follow. So, if you’re playing this just for the story, well, you’ll be sorely disappointed.

Gameplay

Before you begin your journey, you’ll need to choose your starter deck. Each deck, namely Dragon, Spellcaster and Warrior, is associated with their respective characters – Seto Kaiba, Yugi Muto, and Joey Wheeler. The deck you choose will determine which type of cards you’ll start the game with, so be sure to choose wisely.

Now, before we dive into the game’s somewhat complicated gameplay, you should know that the game has several types of cards. The most basic one being the “monster card”. This is basically your Unit cards and you’ll need them to deal damage. Each monster card varies depending on their star rating and quality. Naturally, stronger monsters will have higher star ratings, and that rare monsters usually have higher star rating and is much stronger than a normal card.

However, one thing that’s quite different from any other TCG or CCG that I’ve played before is how you summon your monster cards. Weaker monsters can be summoned directly when played but 5 to 6-star monsters will require a tribute to be summoned. This means you’ll need to sacrifice a played monster card to summon those types of monsters. For a 7-star monster, you’ll need to sacrifice two cards instead!

Not to mention, more powerful monsters usually have special monster effects (such as Special Summon) which are, in my opinion, like the fine print in a terms and conditions contract. It’s important and you know it, but you often neglect to read it. These monster effects can really tip the scales of the duel in your favor when played right, so you really need to be familiar with your cards.

Another interesting part about the monster cards in Yu-Gi-Oh: Duel Evolution TCG Online is that they can be fused to form a much stronger monster card. This effect, called the polymerization effect, can be triggered as long as 1. You have all the monster cards for the polymerization (there’s a polymerization equation that you can refer to by clicking on your card), and 2. You’ll need to have the Polymerization Spell card (a.k.a. Effects card).

Of course, there is an array of other Spell cards that could be beneficial to your monsters, but most of them come with conditions that you’ll need to fulfill. There are also trap cards that will be placed face-down when played. Your opponent will have no idea what sort of nasty stuff you have in store for him if he does a certain move and that, I think, is where this game really shines.

Unlike the monster cards, you can play as many spell and trap cards as you are able to in your turn. However, in this game, the number of cards played isn’t as important – the order in which you play your cards, on the other hand, can be crucial. It is a matter of victory or a loss!

Obviously, having a great deck helps a lot too. The deck-building system in this game is fairly easy to use. You can add up to 40 cards in a deck regardless of the card type. You can also eventually save more than 1 deck at a time. There is also an Evolution feature where you can upgrade your cards. However, to do so, you’ll need to convert your duplicates into essences first. You can get more cards by buying card packs at the Grandpa’s Shop.

There are also plenty of tricks that you can learn and use as you progress in this game, but what I’d personally recommend is for you to play the Tutorial quests. It teaches you a whole lot about the game than the little gameplay footage and tutorial at the start of the game will ever do.

Like most TCGs I’ve reviewed, Yu-Gi-Oh: Duel Evolution has both PvE and PvP aspects. For PvE, you’ll get to go on a “Journey”, which basically contains computer-controlled opponents that you’ll need to duel. There are 3 difficulty levels and you’ll only unlock the next level by completing the entire campaign in the previous difficulty. For PvP, you can battle other players in leagues in Battle City or cross-server battles via the Duel Hall.

This game is pretty generous as well. You can get tons of freebies simply by logging in daily and playing. You can even get extra rewards by completing achievements.

Being a freemium game, it sells several items in exchange for its premium currency, gems. These gems can in turn be purchased by spending real money. Aside from the tier-based VIP system that you can “level up” in by spending more real cash, the game also has a monthly plan/ subscription that will give out free gems and gold to its subscribers.

As entertaining as it may be though, some players may be put off by the fact that Yu-Gi-Oh: Duel Evolution seems like a mobile port. There are actually texts in the game where you have to “tap on screen to continue”.

Community

The game has a guild system called Club. It is unlocked at level 10 and should be a great place for you to meet new, like-minded friends.

Graphics/ Sound

Despite not knowing much about the anime, I absolutely love the art. The details in each card are just astonishing! The music used in this game is quite jazzy as well. I’m not sure how the jazz music matches with the game’s theme though – I would have expected a more anime-style tune.

Conclusion

Despite its pretty much non-existent storyline, Yu-Gi-Oh: Duel Evolution TCG Online is a rather decent free-to-play TCG. It’s surprisingly challenging and it offers up the sort of depth that fans of the genre would most certainly enjoy. If you’re a fan of Yu-Gi-Oh-themed card games or if you simply like playing TCGs online, this might just be right up your alley!
