XERA: Survival is a pretty hardcore, loot-driven survival shooter that’s set in a world that’s embroiled in a massive AI-vs-humans war… a war that the humans are apparently losing. It’s now everybody for themselves as you scour the many locations around the map for precious weapons, gear, food, and other consumables. Be sure to save your loot by depositing it in your stash at one of the two settlements often or you may risk losing everything if you do get killed.
Set in the year 2022, a year in which a prototype combat robot gained self-awareness, giving rise to the massive war between humanity and artificial intelligence – a war that humans are rapidly losing. Surviving this harsh new world, where you’ll need to fight to keep what’s yours, can be difficult, and sometimes, it means you’ll have to take on your fellow men…
In terms of its gameplay, XERA: Survival feels a lot like a battle royale game, namely PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, mainly because you’ll start the game with literally nothing and will have to head to any of the points of interest on the map to look for weapons, armor, and food.
However, unlike a standard battle royale where there’s a dangerous fog, force shield or whatever that’s constantly closing in, there is a variety of hostile robots for you to shoot at instead. Some are super easy to kill, while for others? Not so much! The tougher robots come out at night, by the way.
Now, you won’t only be battling the AI (in the form of robots) in this game; it has some pretty hardcore PvP too! Most players in the game will shoot you on sight if they encounter you outside the base just to get their hands on potentially valuable loot that you may be carrying.
That being said, if you manage to make it back to either one of the settlements in once piece, you can store whatever you have in the game’s global gear stash. What this means is that you’ll be able to access your stash from the NPC at the settlement in any server. From what I know, the developers are also planning to eventually add in quest-giving NPCs so there’ll be more to the game than just loot-gathering and completing events... it'll be a full-blown MMO!
XERA: Survival is a loot-driven shooter, this means that the game will spawn quite a bit of weapons and other items like food and drinks for you to collect. From time to time, you may even be alerted to an airdrop which will usually contain better loot, but of course, airdrops are usually hotly contested, so you might want to head there carefully and keep your eyes peeled for other players.
Similarly, there are compound events that you can enjoy, but these events aren’t exactly PvP-free so aside from having to deal with more than usual robots, you will also need to make sure you’re not being stalked by another player. It’s almost similar to The Division’s Dark Zone, except that it completely does away all the pretense of “co-op” play – you know you’re going to get backstabbed the moment you reach the extraction point, even if you manage to get that far. Plus, if you die at the event site, you won’t get any of the rewards even though you’ve almost completed the event by yourself… prior to dying of course.
Since the game is still in early access, it lacks map variety. Currently, the game only has 1 map for you to play in, but I’m sure the developers will be adding more maps later down the road.
As a multiplayer game that pits player against player, XERA: Survival isn’t exactly the place to make friends. Most players will shoot you on sight. Sometimes, if you’re unlucky enough, you may bump into a team of 2 or more friends who happen to play the game together, which happens a lot, and if that’s the case, you’re completely outgunned. If you are planning to play the game alone, expect to die… a lot unless you completely avoid any places of interest and events.
The graphics in this game is amazing! The day-light cycle actually plays an integral role in the game, allowing you to use the cover of night to sneak up on people. Of course, like most MMOs, the game will eventually have a cosmetic shop whereby you can purchase cosmetics, possibly camouflage gear, for your character.
The sounds here are equally important as well mainly because you can actually rely on them to identify the direction the sounds came from, allowing you to, for instance, know that there are other players nearby from just hearing the familiar pop-pop-pop sounds of gunfire. If you’re familiar with guns, you can actually identify which guns they are using from the sounds too!
To put it simply, XERA: Survival looks and feels like the popular battle royale game, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, but with a survival twist. It’s incredibly fun to play especially if you love loot-driven shooters. Although it’s not exactly “lone ranger”-friendly, XERA: Survival is definitely a game that’s perfect to play with friends! So, if you do plan on buying the game, make sure to grab a copy for a friend as well.
