Summary

There are easy games, and there are some that provide a great deal of challenge, which makes you who in the right mind would ever play them. Of course, some of these titles range from challenging Souls games like Dark Souls and Elden Ring, while others include Contra and Dead Cells. Though difficult, they’re quite enjoyable and provide a great deal of fun and customization.

Though more comparable to retro arcade games of yore than any of the above-mentioned examples, W.A.R.P. offers the same level of challenge and stress. However, I can’t say the same for the fun factor, yet if you’re someone who loves retro-style experiences with old-school controls that barely make your character or spaceship controllable, you’ll be in for a treat. By the way, no sarcasm; it’s a beautifully clunky game that would, at times, make you want to break your Nintendo Switch in half when you crash. However, it’s also incredibly rewarding, and the feeling of relief when you reach the portals at every level is at a whole new level.

So, should you give W.A.R.P. a shot? Well, let’s first take a look at what it has to offer:

Plotline

There isn’t much of a story in W.A.R.P., considering its tale doesn’t play a central role. However, it’s about a spaceship navigating across the known universe. You’ll basically take the mantle of a pilot, navigating across space in wormholes. Unfortunately, things won’t be easy since you’ll be chased around and confronted by obstacles and countless traps, which will definitely ruin your day, further exacerbated by your spaceship’s rather difficult controls.

Gameplay

W.A.R.P.’s gameplay revolves around you controlling your ship to escape to a wormhole. Sounds simple, right? Well, it would be if the control scheme wasn’t so retro; in a way, it’s like playing the old Asteroids arcade game with the greatest difficulty. You’ll basically control the direction of your ship and decide where it faces by using the left joycon and use the ZR or R buttons to accelerate. Given the difficulty and the game’s focus on inertia, it's not the best control scheme out there. It’s hilariously hard, and even if you get used to how it works, the game won’t stop throwing curve balls at you. In more advanced levels, you'll also have to watch your fuel tank. That said, this adds a high layer of challenge that will surely make you pull your hair out while playing. Regardless, nothing compares to the relief (or is it euphoria?) of actually completing a level.

Speaking of levels, there are 140 in W.A.R.P., and they’re all divided into several biomes, each with its own types of locales and challenges. Each level has different layouts; some could contain pipes with maze-like areas, while others have enemies following your every move. Thankfully, you can deal with them by using your cannon, but only if you can hit them since it doesn’t help that the game’s steering mechanic is directly tied to the direction of your shots. Though your cannon can pack a punch, enemies are well-armored, and it may take several hits to take them out.

W.A.R.P.’s focus on inertia makes the experience a little more tedious, yet it’s manageable if you have the patience. Unfortunately, the game has little in the way of progression, and the only way you can improve the entire experience is to practice continuously.

Community

W.A.R.P. is solely a single-player game with no multiplayer elements to speak of.

Graphics/Sound

W.A.R.P.’s visuals are comparable to mid-90s games with a touch of modernity, so it wouldn’t look that dated. The overall art style is relatively generic, and the game’s text is rather puzzling since there seem to be errors. Kudos to the size of the text dialogue spoken by the bizarre-looking animal-like robot that gives you hints before every level. In addition, the game has music, and it kind of reminds me of old arcade games and top-down shooters.

Conclusion

Overall, W.A.R.P. may not be your first option when thinking about playing a rather challenging game, but it’s worth a shot if you’re into retro-style space games. It delivers a difficult experience that, at times, feels tedious. Nevertheless, accomplishing a level feels quite rewarding, and yes, we play games for such moments.

Now available on the Switch, this indie game by 7 Raven Studios is priced at $4.99.
