Versus: Battle of the Gladiator is an online PvP action game that is more on hacking and slashing your opponents. You choose from the different weapons available in the game that provides different attack styles and movements. There are also different set of game modes for players to try out against AI or real players and a plethora of arenas to battle in.
The game puts you into shoes of a gladiator where you must survive battles against other gladiator for glory and survival. It combines some of the themes from the medieval periods of Europe, Rome and Japan to provide a diverse feel to its ancient world.
Versus: Battle of the Gladiator features more of action packed matches similar to popular third person action games. It is more on techniques and skills rather than just mashing on the attack button without hesitation, as players can counter those who relentlessly attack.
There are different types of weapons available in the game, from the standard one-handed swords, shields, two-handed sword, axes and from the unusual weapons such as maces, dual blades and long blades. Each of these weapons has its own distinct style and damage. Take for example using a mace/giant hammer. It can dish out large damage and can knock down a target, but its attack is very slow that it can be evaded by quick players. A sword with a shield has a higher block rate and a faster attack speed than that from a two-handed sword, but the damage is lower. Players must decide on what weapons they will use for certain situations and they will have to master its strengths in order to win.
The controls in the game is the standard WASD for the movement and the mouse for the view, double tapping on the movement key lets you dash, sidestep or back roll to rush forward towards opponents or evade incoming attacks. The basic attack is located at the mouse button and the block at the right mouse button, there are also special attacks mapped on the E and F button where it can deal massive amount of damage to an unguarded opponent or a guard-cancelling attack against defensive opponents.
You can equip with different kinds of armor, from the standard leather types up to the full metallic sets. Depending on what kind of armor you used, it can affect your overall performance, the heavier your set is, the slower your movement will become, and you can become an easy target if you are not careful. One of the cool features in Versus is the destructible armor. Your armor can withstand damage that you take from opponents, and depending on the type of armor, it can withstand certain amount of damage before it breaks. Once you lose all of your armor, you are more vulnerable to damage and can be easily killed by successive blows.
The skill tree in Versus offer some diversities, your basic attacks consist of several attack patterns that can be formed into a combo. You can unlock new move list and skills to replace your current set to provide more variety in your attacks, though some can be unlocked by reaching certain levels. The new skills can provide some status ailments or better damage in certain conditions, so it is better to check on those.
There are different set of game modes available in Versus. In the standard player versus player matches, you can go for the classic team deathmatch to pit against other player teams on the most number of kills, up to eight players can participate in deathmatch. There is also the Duel mode where you challenge a player in a 1-on-1 battle, or you can just go all out with free for all mode, where everyone is an enemy. Or you prefer to go solo, there is the single mode where you can tackle on different maps and difficulty levels, the good news here is that you can earn gold and experience points from single player levels.
The major problem with Versus: Battle of the Gladiator is the few active players, there are almost empty rooms whenever an online matchmaking was set. Another major problem is the latency, even when playing on a solo mission, the latency can be horrible than affect the overall game experience due to delayed attacks and inputs. Hopefully the latency issue can be remedied when more players are active in the game.
The visual in Versus is astounding, the detailed armor from its scales and scratched surface are noticeable, making the characters feel more alive. Some monsters however may need some improvements on the character design, but in terms of armor designs, they are just incredible. As for sounds, there are announcer clips to provide some epic moments for players whenever they landed some killing sprees, the music is decent that can still provide an epic tone to the game.
Versus: Battle of The Gladiator is a great action game with players, it has a deep skill tree system that lets you customize your combos and attack styles and the weapons provide diversity to your playing style. The problem on the lack of players may discourage some from continuing the game, but if they are looking for a great PvP game, Versus got them covered.
