Summary

Small-budget retro-style games don’t have to be tiny in terms of scale. It can be ambitious, groundbreaking, of top-notch quality, and be eyed by various triple-A studios with envy and scorn. Sometimes, all it takes is $5 to treat yourself to a game that exceeds expectations with flying colors and is beloved by an entire community.

It took a while for Vampire Survivors to make its way to the Nintendo Switch, and boy, it did so with a splash. Boasting action-packed roguelike gameplay, dozens of characters, and numerous stages, it is undoubtedly one of the top indie games to date. It belongs on a pedestal alongside experiences like Celeste and Hollow Knight - it’s just that good. A perfect fit for the Switch, its many characters, varied gameplay, and the satisfaction of seeing hordes of night creatures fall to your immeasurable power deliver a remarkable and entertaining experience that will keep you on a hook for hours on end.

So, should you give Vampire Survivors a shot? Let’s check out what it has to offer:

Plotline

Vampire Survivors has bits of lore but doesn’t have storytelling elements, letting you focus on the gameplay. However, the game describes the stages and characters in tiny, one-paragraph stories that are pretty fun reads.

Gameplay

Vampire Survivors is your quintessential roguelike reverse bullet hell experience. Instead of dodging attacks and projectiles, you’re the party firing on your enemies. Though it looks convoluted, the game is relatively straightforward: you’ll traverse various levels, take on hordes of enemies, level up, pick up chests, experience gems and unlockables, and try to survive. Most of what you’ll do is move around carefully since making contact with enemies will quickly deplete your HP bar - death can come relatively quickly if you’re not careful! Oh, and by the way, you’ll unleash your attacks automatically,

One of the main draws of Vampire Survivors is its many characters. There are 57, and each has its own signature weapons and stats. For example, the starting character, Antonio, is armed with a whip that attacks sideways, while Poe Ratcho is an older man who starts off with a garlic force field-like weapon. They all have their own quirks, buffs, and liabilities, which can determine your overall playstyle. For example, Poe suffers from lower HP than other characters but has a 25% magnet buff, enabling him to gather gems relatively quickly. Meanwhile, Arca Ladonna has reduced weapon cooldowns, enabling you to fire projectiles hastily.

There is an insane amount of weapons and upgrade items in Vampire Survivors. You can equip up to six each, and most of them work in conjunction with others to form an upgraded version. For example, the lightning ring and the duplicator enables you to strike lightning at enemies continuously, while the garlic and HP upgrade enhances the former’s range while letting you gradually suck in HP. As you level up and progress by beating stronger enemies and picking up their dropped chests, you can level them up, unlocking more potent effects like more projectiles, increased range, and greater damage.

Using the coins you've gathered, you can also level up your weapons and other upgrades in Vampire Survivors through the main menu screen. Moreover, there are numerous in-game unlockables with varying conditions. For example, you may need to reach level 60 in a certain level to unlock the next or obtain a new character by opening a coffin in one of the stages.

The best part of Vampire Survivors is its high replayability, which guarantees dozens of hours of playing time. Thanks to the impressive variety of characters and weapons, every playthrough feels fresh, and even if you end up dying, the coins and unlockables you earn may play a crucial role in your next run. It’s also a good idea to try out as many characters as you can to find out which one fits your overall playstyle.

Community

Vampire Survivors is a single-player experience, but you can dive into the game with up to four players in co-op mode. We don’t know if an online mode is in the works, but if the devs manage to make it work, we’ll be in for a massive treat.

Graphics/Sound

Vampire Survivors is a retro-style game, and its art style makes it look more like a SNES game than one released in 2023. Regardless, it is nothing short of fantastic on the Nintendo Switch, and it runs relatively smoothly even during high-octane moments with hundreds of enemies and projectiles on screen simultaneously. The character and enemy designs are well-done and somewhat varied - no cookie-cutter characters exist. The only gripe I have is the music - it would have been nice to have a few more tracks on the playlist.

Conclusion

Overall, Vampire Survivors is, without a doubt, one of indie fans' must-have games. At only $5, it’s a massive bargain; you could pay $20 for it, and it would still be worth more. Thanks to its high replayability, straightforward yet fun gameplay, an expansive roster of characters, and possible weapons to arm yourself with, it’s simply one of the best games ever made.
